British woman dies in Italy from Covid after couple were infected during cruise

A woman has died in hospital from Covid after learning she and her husband were infected while on a Mediterranean cruise. The British 60-year-old failed to survive respiratory complications which arose because of the virus. She died at the San Giovanni di Dio e Ruggi d'Aragona hospital in Italy on Friday morning. Her husband who she was travelling with also had the condition but has not had any life-threatening symptoms. They had both spent days in isolation after testing positive when the Bolette vessel arrived in port at Salerno on Wednesday night. Half of European Buyers of Russian Energy Have Opened Ruble Accounts

Around half of the European customers of Russian energy giant Gazprom have opened euro-ruble accounts, according to Russia’s Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Novak has claimed that half of the 54 companies across Europe that buy natural gas from Gazprom have opened a “k account” — a scheme that allows companies to get around Western sanctions and effectively pay for gas in rubles. “Moscow will make them known and that of the 54 companies, including large, medium, and small, that have contracts with Gazprom about half of them have already opened accounts, one in foreign currency and one in rubles,” Novak said, promising to name the companies, Il Giornale reports . The banking scheme allows companies to deposit euros or dollars. Gazprombank then converts them into rubles and places the rubles in a separate account owned by the purchaser, which is used to buy Russian gas. Researchers share draft genome sequences of monkeypox virus

Researchers from the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), Lisbon, Portugal have shared the draft genome sequence of the monkeypox virus that is rapidly spreading in many European countries. The draft sequence has been posted at the virolgical.org site. The released draft genome sequence covers about 92% of the reference sequence. The sample was obtained from a swab collected on May 4 from skin lesions from a male patient in Portugal. As on May 19, Portugal had reported over 20 laboratory-confirmed cases of monkeypox. Draft genome sequence Researchers from Belgium — the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, and the University of Antwerp, Antwerp — too have shared a draft genome sequence of monkeypox at the virolgical.org site. The researchers were able to reconstruct 98.9% of the genome. The genome was sequenced from a sample collected from a person in Belgium. Brit causes monkeypox outbreak in Australia after it reports first case of virus

Australia has reported its first monkeypox case from someone who recently travelled from the UK. A second case of the virus has been confirmed in a man in New South Wales who also recently travelled back to the country from Europe. Both men, in their 30s and 40s, are presenting mild symptoms so but ones which are clinically compatible with monkeypox, health officials said. The man in his 30s arrived in Melbourne on Monday, Victoria state's health department said, while the second case was identified in Sydney in a man in his 40s. Dr Kerry Chant, New South Wales' state chief health officer, said a preliminary test in the Sydney man was positive and subsequent testing confirmed the case.
