The Supreme Court on Friday adjourned till November 16 the hearing on the lawsuit filed by the West Bengal government which alleged that the CBI is going ahead with the investigation in post-poll violence cases without securing the pre-requisite nod from the state under the law. A bench of justices L Nageswara Rao and B R Gavai noted that the Centre has filed a counter-affidavit in response to the suit filed by the state, and said it will hear the matter on a non-miscellaneous day. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for West Bengal, sought a specific date since the CBI is proceeding with the FIRs. “We’ll have it on November 16. Parties may file a rejoinder and additional document if any,” the bench said. Calcutta HC directs CBI to question Bengal Minister over daughter’s appointment
The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to interrogate West Bengal Minister of State for Education Paresh Chandra Adhikari over the appointment of his daughter as a teacher in a state-run school. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay directed that the Minister should appear before the CBI authorities by Tuesday evening for interrogation over the allegations. A petitioner had approached the Court alleging that she was deprived from the job while the daughter of the minister got the job. The petitioner’s lawyer Firdous Shamim claimed that his client’s rank was 20 but suddenly it became 21 in the merit list. “Today it has become clear my client had secured 77 marks in the recruitment examination, while the minister’s daughter got only 61,” the lawyer said. A division Bench of the Calcutta High Court on May 18 refused to hear an appeal of West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee challenging an Order of a single Bench that directed him to appear before the CBI in connection with the School Service Commission's (SSC) appointments scam . The single Bench of Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay directed Mr. Chatterjee, who was the State Education Minister when the alleged appointments were made, to appear before the Central Bureau of Investigation at its office here before 6 p.m. on Wednesday. He is now the Industry, Commerce and Parliamentary Affairs Minister of the Mamata Banerjee Cabinet. President to open women legislators’ meet on May 26
Many of the leading women lawmakers in the country are expected to congregate later this month in Thiruvananthapuram for a two-day National Women Legislators' Conference organised by the Kerala State Legislative Assembly. President Ram Nath Kovind will inaugurate the conference at the Kerala Assembly at 12 noon on May 26, Speaker M. B. Rajesh said here on Wednesday. Part of the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav programmes organised by the State Assembly to mark the 75th anniversary of Independence, the event will be attended by women legislators of both houses of the Parliament and various State Assemblies, he said. Pre-monsoon rain continues to lash State
Even as the southwest monsoon is slowly advancing into more parts of South Bay of Bengal, which is expected to reach the State by May 27, life in central and northern Kerala was affected on Wednesday as the pre-monsoon became vigorous. For the second consecutive week, heavy rain lashed the State. Cheruthazham in Kannur recorded extreme rainfall of 25 cm during the last 24 hours ended at 8.30 am on Wednesday followed by Mahe 16 cm, Thalassery 13 cm, Kannur 12 cm; Kozhikode 12 cm, Vadakara 10 cm and Vaikom 9 cm. A weather bulletin issued by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday, said the southwest monsoon advanced into some more parts of South Bay of Bengal, entire Andaman Sea and Andaman and Nicobar Islands and some more parts of east-central Bay of Bengal.
