Luxury automobile makers like Lamborghini, Mercedes Benz, and BMW, are all seeing strong demand for their models in the premium end, despite the COVID-related disruptions, largely due to a shift in customer profile to younger, first-generation entrepreneurs, who believe in the ‘you only live once’ philosophy. Varun Kalyanasundaram, a 33-year-old director at Chennai-based Polimer Media, bought his first luxury car nearly 10 years ago “because of the sheer driving pleasure, technology and most importantly comfort.” Mr. Kalyanasundaram currently owns a BMW X7, Mercedes Benz S class, Mercedes Benz GLS, an Audi E-tron, and is now eyeing the Mercedes Benz Maybach GLS. “I drive by myself. I don’t have a chauffeur. I like long drives and the pleasure of driving is most important. The technology should be included, but I need comfort. That is it.,” he says. Sharad Agarwal, Head, Lamborghini India, says there has been a shift in the customer profile over the years. “We are seeing younger, … [Read more...] about Younger clientele driving luxury car sales in India

ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific

While Washington is trying to build alliances in the region to contain the rise of China, ASEAN has accepted China’s growing power and tries to include, rather than exclude, Beijing in the emerging regional architecture. There is one problem, though. China has not fully subscribed to the geographical definition of the Indo-Pacific region, suspecting that this framework is tailored to suit the US agenda. Besides, China does not have direct access to the Indian Ocean. But then, neither does the US for that matter, but this has not stopped it from … [Read more...] about ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific
Court: Some rail rate talks allowed in price-fixing suits
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Some of the details of rate conversations between the nation's four largest railroads will now be included in lawsuits challenging billions of dollars of charges the railroads charged, but this week's mixed ruling from a federal appeals court will also exclude some documents. The ruling from the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals will likely set up more arguments over evidence as Union Pacific, BNSF, Norfolk Southern and CSX railroads defend themselves against dozens of lawsuits accusing them of conspiring to inflate their rates with coordinated fuel surcharges between 2003 and 2007. The key to determining what evidence is admissible will be whether the conversations relate to shipments that cross multiple railroads or not. The court said it “defies logic” to exclude discussions about traffic that stays on a single railroad or conversations about all shipments, but … [Read more...] about Court: Some rail rate talks allowed in price-fixing suits

North’s first missile test of 2022 was hypersonic
A photo of North Korea's hypersonic missile launch in Chagang Province on Wednesday was released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency on Thursday. [YONHAP] The projectile North Korea fired on Wednesday morning was a hypersonic missile that successfully hit its target, according to the regime's state news agency. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that the North’s Academy of National Defense Science, which is responsible for the country’s missile program, conducted a test of a hypersonic missile on Wednesday. “After the launch, the hypersonic gliding warhead detached from the missile and flew 120 km (75 miles) laterally before it precisely hit its target 700 km away,” KCNA reported. South Korea's ongoing sex crime crisis forms the focus of a gripping new Netflix documentary— Cyber Hell: Exposing an Internet Horror. Two years after the coronavirus pandemic emerged and left much of the globe in a state of paralysis, policymakers are grappling with ongoing challenges, including clogged supply chains , lockdowns in China and the prospect of an energy crisis as nations wean themselves off Russian oil and gas . Those colliding forces have some economists starting to worry about a global recession as different corners of the world find their economies battered by events. Finding ways to avoid a slowdown while continuing to exert pressure on Russia for its war in Ukraine will be the primary focus of finance ministers from the Group of 7 nations who are convening in Bonn, Germany, this week. At a news conference on Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Janet L. … [Read more...] about Economic Headwinds Mount as Leaders Weigh Costs of Confronting Russia
