The family of a woman who was the victim of an apparent murder-suicide is suing the Cook County sheriff and chief judge, claiming they bear responsibility for her death by placing the alleged murderer in an electronic monitoring program they knew was not being adequately managed. Shanate Guy, 18, and her boyfriend Dominiko Johnson, 20, were found dead together with gunshot wounds to the head, where a weapon was found at the scene, in the southside of Chicago in June 2021, Fox 32 reported citing the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. “An autopsy released Tuesday found Johnson died of a gunshot wound to his head and Guy died of a gunshot wound to her face, the medical examiner’s office said,” Fox 32 noted at the time. “Johnson’s death was ruled a suicide and Guy’s death was ruled a homicide.” At the time of his death, Johnson had two pending felony cases involving firearms in Cook County, CWB Chicago reported . Fail: Masked California County’s Case Rates ‘Near-Identical’ to Nearby Maskless Counties
Advocates for universal masking hit another snag after data showed that one California county, which recently lifted its mask mandate, experienced “near-identical” case rate curves as nearby counties, which did not have mask mandates in place. Alameda County stood as the only county in the area that reimposed a mask mandate for the bulk of June. The rule went back into effect June 3, requiring individuals to wear a mask in “most indoor public settings.” “We cannot ignore the data, and we can’t predict when this wave may end. Putting our masks back on gives us the best opportunity to limit the impact of a prolonged wave on our communities,” Alameda County Health Officer Dr. Nicholas Moss said at the time. The county lifted the mandate three weeks later, on June 25. This was the only Bay Area county to have a mask mandate in place during that time period, setting up an interesting case study. And as it turns out, Moss’s statement did not come to fruition, as the mask mandate … [Read more...] about Fail: Masked California County’s Case Rates ‘Near-Identical’ to Nearby Maskless Counties

Alameda County ends short-lived mask mandate, citing improved coronavirus conditions
Three weeks after becoming the first California county to reinstitute a mask mandate in most indoor public settings amid climbing coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, Alameda County has rescinded the order — citing improving conditions. The move, effective at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, coincides as the San Francisco Bay Area’s second most populous county progresses from the high to medium COVID-19 community transmission level as defined by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That agency recommends public indoor masking for counties in the high level, but not for those in medium. In a statement Friday, county officials didn’t directly tie the fate of the local mask order to the CDC tiers, but instead said they closely monitored local trends and have determined the mandate can now be lifted. “Conditions have stabilized following the sustained increases in case reports and hospitalizations we saw throughout May,” said county Health Officer Dr. Nicholas Moss. … [Read more...] about Alameda County ends short-lived mask mandate, citing improved coronavirus conditions
