In the most sickening and evil cases, criminals in the UK can be given lifelong anonymity. It means once they have been released they cannot be identified by law. Jon Venables and Robert Thompson, both aged 10, were given lifelong anonymity after they tortured and killed 2-year-old James Bulger in 1993. The sickening murder so shocked and horrified the public there were fears the two could be killed in a vigilante attack after they were released. James Bulger's dad wants Venables to lose his anonymity after he was caught with sick images of children for the second time. There are other horrific cases which stunned the nation and meant British judges felt compelled to hand the criminals new identities. 12 Books to Help You Love Reading Again
Reading is hard right now. The pandemic has pushed our already scattered attention spans to a crisis point. But even before 2020, stressors such as political chaos and the allure of our phones made it harder and harder to find the time and focus to get lost in a book. Even when we’re not living through a distracting moment, we will inevitably have personal fallow periods when reading as a habit and a respite just doesn’t happen. Certain writing is able to grab us and shake us out of these ruts—by presenting a breakneck adventure we feel compelled to see through; by gently opening us back up to the thrill of a good story; by allowing us to spend time in the mind of a fictional character. When they appear to us at the right moment and in the right way, these books can act as a bridge that leads us back to the rewards of literature. Below, our staff members have compiled 12 books that rekindled our love for reading after a dry spell. Heartburn , by Nora Ephron After I had … [Read more...] about 12 Books to Help You Love Reading Again
The making of an Indian English singer
As a 16-year-old, Sharina Ahmad has big dreams . The teenager from Bodh Gaya in Bihar sees herself as an English vocalist on the global stage; the people and media in her hometown could not agree more. In the last few months, she has been on a high, with offers for performances within the country and from event management companies in Germany, Netherlands and Dubai. Her fan base has been gradually inching up. She has put out over 100 cover songs on YouTube and music lovers from Dubai, Nigeria, Vietnam, the Philippines, USA and UK have followed her with their appreciation, suggestions and comments. Barely three years ago, Sharina developed the desire to learn and speak English with an American accent. “I come from a small village Cherki, where people hardly know English and we do not get good English teachers either; though Bodh Gaya is a popular international tourist centre,” she says. As a child, Sharina would receive praise for having a sweet voice and she developed the urge to … [Read more...] about The making of an Indian English singer

Detroit Lions rookie Aidan Hutchinson has been getting his work done on the field and quietly has been handling his business off it. Coming into training camp as the team’s second overall pick in the draft, it would have been easy for Hutchinson to assume he’d be given respect immediately from his teammates, but he’d rather earn it. "That’s always been the mindset for me really, in every aspect, high school, college," Hutchinson said. "When I’m young and you’ve got these guys that have been there for a while, I respect that and I want them to respect me. You earn it out on the practice field and your rookie duties." That kind of attitude is not always a given with young players, especially ones drafted so highly. But coach Dan Campbell said … [Read more...] about Lions rookie Aidan Hutchinson earning praise from coaches, teammates during first minicamp

The Who – review
Q uadrophenia finally gets the live production it deserves, as the Who 's two surviving members reunite to thrillingly play their 1973 rock opera magnum opus about mental illness, Mods and lost youth, the inspiration for 1979's cult movie , with a dedication to the late author Iain Banks thrown in for good measure. Burying the album's patchy staging history (Quadrophenia's original 1973 tour opener saw Keith Moon pass out drugged on his drums, while 1996's semi-theatrical version featured Gary Glitter), this slick new Quadrophenia and More show directed by singer Roger Daltrey celebrates some career-defining music and the Who's peerless legacy. Back after missing Daltrey's Tommy tour in 2011, even the famously fastidious guitarist and creative fulcrum Pete Townshend approves. "Nice to say I wrote the music at least," he adds, after insisting all – well, most – applause be directed his bandmate's way. A bombardment of video visuals on round screens like giant … [Read more...] about The Who – review
My advice after going to Day One of San Francisco’s Outside Lands: Go
LATEST August 6, 11:30 a.m . One-day tickets for Saturday have sold out but day passes are still available for Sunday. August 6, 9:30 a.m. San Francisco 's Outside Lands usually sells out. Not this year. One-day tickets are still available for Saturday and Sunday. If you're on the fence about whether to snag a last-minute ticket, my advice after spending the day there on Friday is go, even if you're underwhelmed by the lineup and only know a few bands playing (see our recommendations here ). The best part of my day was discovering acts I was unfamiliar with, like Zambian artist Sampa the Great who delivered a viscous swirl of hip-hop, rap, and Afrobeats drenched in jazz; and Fay Webster who soothed her audience with whispery, lovelorn indie-country ballads while playing guitar. Convinced? Now, you have to figure out how to get there. Lyft and Uber are expensive this weekend as demand drives up prices ( SFGATE wrote about the insane prices getting home Friday … [Read more...] about My advice after going to Day One of San Francisco’s Outside Lands: Go
