Personal weapons ownership is on the rise in Europe in response to mass sexual assaults and radical Islamic terror attacks, according to the Wall Street Journal. While the Geneva-based Small Arms Survey found that a rise in personal firearms ownership on the continent represents only 10 per cent of the 32 percent global rise in the decade to 2017, the WSJ remarks that “Europe’s shift has been rapid”.The Times of London notes that Finland, Austria, Norway, Germany, and France are now in the top 25 nations in the world for civilian gun ownership, with France having 12.7 million weapons — more than Iraq and Afghanistan combined. A man set a car on fire and stabbed three people - one fatally - in the Australian city of Melbourne this morning. Two survivors are in hospital, one reportedly in a serious condition. Belgian police have shot and wounded a man who attacked officers with a knife after he was found sleeping rough near a Brussels park where illegal immigrants congregate. The suspect was taken to hospital in a serious condition, according to local media, which reported that prosecutors said in a statement there was “no indication” to suggest the incident was a terror attack.La Libre reports a source who said the assailant was either “Afghan or Egyptian origin”. Two officers approached a man who was sleeping rough and asked him to move elsewhere so the street could be cleaned, Brussels police spokesman Ilse Van de Keere told AFP. On August 17th last year a van rammed into crowds on the La Rambla boulevard in the heart of Barcelona, igniting four days of terror which investigators are still trying to explain and the survivors to overcome. The van driver, Younes Abouyaaqoub, a 22-year-old Moroccan, abandoned the vehicle and disappeared into a busy market. He then stole a car, killed the driver and ran over a police officer at a roadblock. When he was finally shot dead by police after four days on the run, he had killed 15 people of nine different nationalities -- including an Australian boy aged seven and a three-year-old Spanish boy.
