A crowd of dozens chanted on a sweltering street corner Tuesday as Ahmaud Arbery’s hometown unveiled new street signs honoring the young Black man who was fatally shot after being chased by three white men in a nearby neighborhood — a crime local officials vowed to never forget. Arbery’s parents joined the celebration the day after the men responsible for their son’s death received harsh prison sentences in U.S. District Court for committing federal hate crimes. Officials in coastal Brunswick, where Arbery grew up, have ordered that intersections along all 2.7 miles (4.35 kilometers) of Albany Street that runs through the heart of the city’s Black community will have additional signs designating it as Honorary Ahmaud Arbery Street. The first two signs were unveiled Tuesday at an intersection near the Brunswick African-American Cultural Center, where one wall is adorned with a giant mural of Arbery’s smiling face. “That’s an honor, is all I can say,” said Brenda Davis, a … [Read more...] about Ahmaud Arbery’s hometown honors him following end of hate crime case

The Spirit of Old West Point
FEBRUARY, 1907 (1858-1862) BY MORRIS SCHAFF I ON THE THRESHOLD SOME time during the winter of 185758, I received from the Hon. Samuel S. Cox, Member of Congress from Ohio, and representing the district composed of Licking, Franklin, and Pickaway, an appointment as cadet at West Point. I know it was winter time, for, across the vanished years, I can see the family gathered before the big wood fire, and my father entering, clad in his greatcoat — he had been to Newark and on his way home had stopped at the post office in Kirkersville—and bearing in his hand a large and significant-looking official letter. Removing his coat and adjusting his glasses, he opened the communication from Washington and read my appointment. Oh, the quiet radiance of my mother’s face! And never, I think, did fire burn so cheerily as ours burned that night, — and somehow, I am fain to believe, the curling smoke communicated the news to the old farm; for every field that I had wandered over from … [Read more...] about The Spirit of Old West Point
The New Novels
ALTHOUGH the thing which Mr. Kipling is doing possesses such immediate significance as to hamper any cool judgment upon his measure of success, the place of honor for the year in English fiction seems indisputably to belong to Puck of Pook’s Hill. 1 It may be possible that merely as a piece of abstract literature this group of short stories will not ultimately fill the high position which now appears its due. Contemporary rating can never be infallible. But after all, this is of minor importance, since no tarnishing finger of time, no fading glamour, no change of taste, can alter the fact that in conceiving and carrying out such a plan the author proves his own claim to permanent greatness. With all his glitter (which we once feared might degenerate into glorified journalism), with all his restless flitting from land to land, his experimenting, his weakness for panache,—his Sousa moments, so to speak, — looking back upon his career it is now plain that he, the man, has been … [Read more...] about The New Novels
Leamington Spa
My dear Editor, — You can hardly have expected to hear from me again, (unless by invitation to the field of honor,) after those cruel and terrible notes upon my harmless article in the July Number. How could you find it in your heart (a soft one, as I have hitherto supposed) to treat an old friend and liege contributor in that unheard-of way? Not that I should care a fig for any amount of vituperation, if you had only let my article come before the public as I wrote it, instead of suppressing precisely the passages with which I had taken most pains, and which I flattered myself were most cleverly done. The interview with the President, for example: it would have been a treasure to the future historian; and I hold you responsible to posterity for thrusting it into the fire. However, I cannot lose so good an opportunity of showing the world the placability and sweetness that adorn my character, and therefore send you another article, in which, I trust, you will find nothing to strike … [Read more...] about Leamington Spa
Putin scrambling for support from “outcasts” shows his weakness: Expert
Russian President Vladimir Putin 's attempts to garner support for his country among other nations amid his widely condemned war in Ukraine demonstrates that Russia is in a "weak position," according to an expert. Kurt Volker, a distinguished fellow at the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) and former U.S. special representative for Ukraine negotiations, was asked during a UATV interview published Tuesday why Russia was seeking companions in countries that are "outcasts." Volker responded that any countries that are economically and politically capable on their own "want to keep a distance" from Russia and "don't approve of Russia's unprovoked aggression." "Countries that are in a weaker position that might need some currency, they might need trade, they might need import energy," Volker said. "They'll try to do business with Russia, but they're going to be careful as well because they don't want to be tied up in the global sanctions against Russia." Volker told UATV … [Read more...] about Putin scrambling for support from “outcasts” shows his weakness: Expert

“I transformed my life after years of crippling anxiety”
I was raised in a small town in Pennsylvania, called Dover. My mom gave birth to me when she was 19 years old, and raised me on her own. This meant that managing the pressures of working, alongside having a child was difficult for her. Due to my mom's long work hours, I spent some time with my grandparents, and a lot of time alone, as I was growing up. Because I felt that I had to do a lot to raise myself, I began developing perfectionist tendencies. I'd come home, have a snack, do my homework, and call my mom, asking her if I could go outside to play—at the time, my routine became rigid as it allowed me to gain a sense of control. My mom worked long hours and I did not want to add any more stress to her day-to-day life, as she would arrive home exhausted. My grandparents also had their own children, so I didn't want to be a burden—something else that somebody had to worry about. So I learned from an early age to be silent. This soon developed into people pleasing, as I felt that … [Read more...] about “I transformed my life after years of crippling anxiety”
Don’t Be So Certain That Social Media Is Undermining Democracy
If you only read The Atlantic to get your tech news , you’d probably be under the impression that social media is a Leviathan on an inexorable path to devour democracy . Headlines scream that Facebook is a “ Doomsday Machine ” and an autocratic “ hostile foreign power ” that has made American life “ uniquely stupid .” A recent Atlantic headline to a Jonathan Haidt article said it plainly: “ Yes, Social Media Really Is Undermining Democracy .” Whatever the magazine’s editorial stance, these claims are not empirically grounded, and it’s unlikely they’ll stop being used any time soon. Scary narratives have a way of spreading and taking hold in ways that “we don’t know yet” wouldn’t. Prof. Haidt, a social psychologist at New York University, notes in The Atlantic that “conflicting studies are common in social-science research.” And yet, his “undermining democracy” essay downplayed the breadth of evidence and studies critiquing the concept of—to cite one … [Read more...] about Don’t Be So Certain That Social Media Is Undermining Democracy
Trump-Endorsed Tim Michels Wins Wisconsin Republican Primary Race for Governor
Trump-endorsed Tim Michels won Tuesday night’s Republican primary race for governor in Wisconsin, meaning he will face off against Democrat Gov. Tony Evers in November. The Republican primary race in the crucial battleground state set the stage for yet another proxy war, with Trump-endorsed Tim Michels, who co-owns Michels Corp, and Pence-backed former lieutenant governor Rebecca Kleefisch facing off. However, Michels came away as the victor Tuesday night. Michels used his victory speech to promise to focus on jobs and the economy and said he would stand up for people who “have been left behind by the Democratic Party that just wants to focus on the social issues.” “As governor, my number one priority is to take care of the hardworking people of Wisconsin,” Michels said.
