When Annece Holts took over the band program at Orchard Knob Middle School last fall, she found only 12 instruments in good working order — only a fraction of what she needed for the 80 students who had enrolled in one of the four band music classes. Holts said she repaired some of the instruments, shifted students to what few instruments she had and began spending her Saturdays writing grants and figuring out how to raise enough money to secure more instruments for students in the inner-city school. On Monday, the fruits of her year-long effort brought a $3,000 donation from the Krystal Foundation, part of $9,500 raised this year to ensure that next year all students will have their own mouthpieces and the band ensemble will have a more diverse instrument mix when the next school year begins in August. "We have limited instruments and even less working instruments so this grant will make a huge difference for us," Holts said Monday after the Krystal Foundation donated … [Read more...] about Krystal helps buy more instruments for the band at Orchard Knob
Paul McDonald turned the Hop Jam into a literal hop jam.McDonald hopped off the stage during the final song of his set and got a little more intimate with his audience.“I try to move around and try to rile up the audience a little bit and wake them up,” McDonald said.“Doing an earlier set like this, I’m playing in front of a whole lot of bands that I admire and respect a whole lot, so I was trying to kind of wake (fans) up to get them prepped for Drew (Holcomb) and Manchester Orchestra and all those guys.”McDonald was among main stage performers Sunday at the Hop Jam, a fifth-year craft beer and music festival that annually attracts crowds to Tulsa’s Arts District. A BRAVE band of terror attack survivors are calling on the public to help them combat extremism. The group, which includes people caught up in the Manchester Arena atrocity, say more must be done to “take on the evil” that has claimed so many lives. In an open letter, members including Becky Rigby, 35 – the widow of soldier Lee Rigby, who was murdered on a London street in May 2013 – issue a clarion call on how to stop the extremists before they strike. The group say: “With just two days to go until the anniversary of the Manchester Arena attack, which also marks the murder five years ago of Fusilier Lee Rigby, we would like to ask the public, as well as honouring those we have lost, to think about how you can become part of the solution to terror. “We are a group of survivors of terrorism. In all cases, the scars of those moments are deep. “As we know from our own experience, … [Read more...] about Brave band of terror survivors including Lee Rigby’s widow Becky call on public to help them combat extremism
NEW YORK -- An online campaign was created in the wake of a lawyer's tirade against Spanish-speaking workers, with a single aim: sending a mariachi band to perform outside his Upper West Side home. Attorney Aaron Schlossberg has come under fire for a video that shows him ranting against Spanish-speaking employees at Fresh Kitchen in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday. As the video shows, Schlossberg presumed the employees live in the U.S. illegally on welfare paid by his taxes. After he was identified, people shared previous footage of Schlossberg engaging in xenophobic hate speech. They also changed his law office's Google listing to a Spanish restaurant and drove his firm's Yelp rating down. If that wasn't enough, a "Mariachis For Aaron" campaign on GoFundMe raised $1,094 in two days -- more than double its goal -- to send a Mariachi band to his office for a "Latin Party" with demonstrators. "We are countering hate and racism with the sound of music," writes Mark Goldberg, … [Read more...] about Campaign sends mariachi band to home of lawyer who went on tirade
