Mass Evacuation As Smelly Fruit Is Mistaken For Toxic Gas Leak
World Australia Hundreds of students and teachers were evacuated from a university library on Saturday when the smell of rotting fruit was mistaken for a major gas leak. Around 600 people fled the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, as firefighters arrived to investigate the suspicious odour, Australian news website news.co.au reported. Rather than a gas leak, however, the culprit turned out to be a rotting durian fruit. The hazardous materials team donned protective gear including gas masks to conduct “a comprehensive search” of the library to investigate “potentially dangerous chemicals,” a Metropolitan Fire Brigade statement titled “Rotten afternoon on campus” said.
