Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 VATICAN CITY (AP) — A Vatican cardinal testified Wednesday that Pope Francis himself ordered the ouster of the Holy See’s auditor-general, turning the tables on a scandal that had sparked questions about the Vatican’s commitment to financial transparency and accountability. Cardinal Angelo Becciu opened a second day of questioning in the Vatican’s big financial fraud trial by saying Francis had recently authorized him to reveal the details of Libero Milone’s 2017 departure as the Vatican’s first auditor-general. He did so to clarify his previous testimony, during which he declined to respond to questions about Milone “out of love for the Holy Father.” The Vatican announced June 20, 2017 that Milone had resigned two years into his mandate, without providing details. His ouster, as well as the removal of PriceWaterHouseCoopers as Vatican auditors, had long been cited by Cardinal George … [Read more...] about Cardinal: Pope ordered auditor to resign over spying charge

Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
When a shooter attacked a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, over the weekend, its security guard tried to stop him. At least one of his shots hit the gunman, but it didn’t stop the deadly rampage because the gunman was wearing body armor. Ten Black people died in the racist massacre, including security guard Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police officer hailed as a hero. It’s the latest mass shooting in which the gunman apparently came prepared for anyone trying to stop him with a gun. At least 21 mass shooters over the last four decades have worn some kind of body armor — and the majority of those were within the last 10 years, according to a database maintained by The Violence Project, a nonpartisan research group that tracks gun violence. Among them: A massacre that killed 12 people and injured dozens more at a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012, and another in nearby Boulder that left 10 people dead at a supermarket last year. The shooter in Texas’s deadliest … [Read more...] about Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
Amber Heard confirms she has hit, thrown things at Johnny Depp under oath
Amber Heard reiterated in the Fairfax County courtroom in Virginia that she has previously hit and thrown things at her ex-husband Johnny Depp . The admission under oath on the witness stand has been latched onto by social media users and become a major talking point on social media. Depp's attorney, Camille Vasquez , was questioning Heard when the actor clarified that it was always her testimony that she had "hit" Depp. Depp and Heard are currently embroiled in a $50 million defamation lawsuit after Heard wrote a 2018 op-ed stating she was a survivor of domestic violence. She never mentioned her ex-husband Depp by name but his legal team argue the insinuation has caused a massive loss of potential earnings. While on the stand Tuesday, Heard was once again asked about her own violent actions towards Depp. "It's always been my own testimony that I hit Johnny," Heard told the court, turning to address the jury. Asked whether she threw anything at him during a specific … [Read more...] about Amber Heard confirms she has hit, thrown things at Johnny Depp under oath

The first edition of Whitathon Run, being organised by LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), was flagged off by Sivangi Akhil, a retinoblastoma survivor, on Beach Road here on Sunday. Whitathon Run, initiated in 2018 at Hyderabad, is the institute’s annual event aimed at raising awareness and funds for early diagnosis and treatment of Retinoblastoma, a life and vision-threatening eye cancer in children. The run was organised in two categories – 3 km and 5 km. The T-shirt for the very first edition of Whitathon was unveiled by Innukurthi Venkateswara Rao, Dronacharya awardee and chief coach of the women international boxing team, and Usha Nagisetty, two-time silver medallist at the international senior world women boxing championship. My method is a mix of Gandhi and Bhagat Singh: Soni Sori
In June last year, Madkam Hidme from Gumpad village in the dense forests of Sukma in South Chhattisgarh, was raped and killed, allegedly by security forces. She was 23. The governing authorities of Bastar celebrated Madkam’s death, calling it the killing of a hardcore Maoist. For the people of Gumpad, this compounded the tragedy. Who could they turn to for justice? They sent a message to Soni Sori, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in Bastar. Soni quickly launched and led a sustained public campaign to secure justice for Madkam’s family. The case was taken to the Chhattisgarh High Court, which ordered the exhuming of the woman’s body for a second autopsy and, subsequently, a judicial probe. Soni did not stop there. She launched a ‘tiranga yatra’ (tricolour march) from Dantewada to Gumpad — part of the Red Corridor — and hoisted the national flag on Independence Day 2016, something even heavily armed security forces have been unable to do in the past years. How did this former … [Read more...] about My method is a mix of Gandhi and Bhagat Singh: Soni Sori
Rosé wine is elevating its image with new blends and players
One out of every ten bottles consumed in the world is a rosé, according to the latest World Rosé Observatory published in 2021. Once stereotyped as a wine associated with bad taste, rosé has moved upmarket to become a third type of wine in its own right, and one that is not only suitable for aperitif time. Serious efforts on the elaboration of various rosé wines as well as on the image of rosé continue to be made, in order to meet consumer expectations and elevate the product. Over the last few days, the world of wine has been buzzing about rock star legend Jon Bon Jovi's arrival in France. The It's My Life singer wasn't in town for a concert but for one of his other passions in life: wine. The event marked the official retail launch of his wine. And his wine is none other than a rosé that the singer has concocted with top winemaker Gérard Bertrand (who also is familiar with the world of music, as he's been organising an international jazz festival at one of his domains – … [Read more...] about Rosé wine is elevating its image with new blends and players
Soccer-Qatar World Cup hotels must welcome guests in ‘non-discriminatory manner’ – FIFA
(Reuters) - Hotels that are on the official list of recommended accommodation for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar are required to welcome guests in a "non-discriminatory manner" or face termination of contracts, FIFA said on Friday. A Scandinavian media survey showed that three of the 69 hotels on FIFA's official list of recommended accommodation will deny entry to same-sex couples. Twenty other hotels said they would accommodate them as long as they did not publicly show that they were gay, while 33 hotels had no issues on booking same-sex couples. Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar, which will host the World Cup from Nov. 21 to Dec. 18. In a statement to Reuters, FIFA said that, since being made aware of the report, it has been in touch with the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy (SC) and "will ensure that the hotels mentioned are once again made aware of our strict requirements in relation to welcoming guests in a non-discriminatory manner. "Hotels, as well as any … [Read more...] about Soccer-Qatar World Cup hotels must welcome guests in ‘non-discriminatory manner’ – FIFA
Republican Senators Reject Gun Control as a Response to Buffalo Mass Shooting
Republican Sens. are rejecting calls for gun control coming from President Joe Biden and other Democrats in the wake of the Buffalo, New York, mass shooting. The Hill notes Sens. John Barrasso (R-WY) Charles Grassley (R-IA) have made very clear gun control is a non-starter. On Tuesday, Barrasso responded to the Democrat push for gun control, saying, “It just doesn’t seem to be helpful to me to go after law-abiding citizens and our Second Amendment rights, so I’m going to continue to hold that position.” Grassley said, “I think I heard a Black person from Buffalo on television say that guns don’t kill, people kill. So what are you going to accomplish by gun control?” Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) sent out a fundraising email on Monday to fill his campaign coffers off of the Buffalo, New York, mass shooting. https://t.co/WnjHm1XKNk — Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) May 18, 2022 Grassley was referencing the Buffalo resident who went viral in an interview after the … [Read more...] about Republican Senators Reject Gun Control as a Response to Buffalo Mass Shooting
Joe Manchin Frustrated His Gun Control Can’t Garner Votes for Passage
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) expressed frustration in the wake of the mass shooting in Buffalo, New York, that his legislation on gun control cannot get the votes necessary for passage. The Hill reported that Manchin made comments Monday, saying, “We can’t even get Manchin-Toomey, which didn’t violate anyone’s rights. It just said there should not be a commercial transaction unless there’s a background check.” Manchin said of his gun control bill, “It’s the most, I think it’s the most agreed upon, it’s the most accepted in the country and we can’t even get that done.” The Manchin-Toomey gun control package was created in the wake of the December 14, 2012, attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School. Numerous gun controls were included in the bill, the chief of which being an expansion of background checks. The bill failed, however, in part because background checks were not causal in the Sandy Hook attack. The guns carried by the attacker were stolen from his mother earlier in the … [Read more...] about Joe Manchin Frustrated His Gun Control Can’t Garner Votes for Passage
Manchin: Gun Control Bill Wouldn’t Have Stopped Newtown
Appearing on CBS News’ Face the Nation on April 14, Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) said Newtown families have told him they know the bill he and Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) have crafted would not have prevented the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary. In other words, Manchin’s expanded background check “compromise” bill, being pushed in response to Newtown, does not do anything that would have stopped the Newtown tragedy from happening. Manchin said the families to whom he’s spoken just keep urging him to do something in hopes that somewhere down the road new gun control legislation will “prevent one family from…going through what [Newtown] families went through.” Senator Toomey was also on Face the Nation. And he said: “I acknowledge, there’s no single bill that is a panacea for [gun crime], nothing guarantees that a committed criminal isn’t going to find a way to get a gun.” Connecticut had the 5th most stringent gun control laws in the nation when Adam Lanza committed his … [Read more...] about Manchin: Gun Control Bill Wouldn’t Have Stopped Newtown
