More than a third (36%) of people with the condition who spent up to five months on a strict diet with NHS support were still in remission 24 months later, the latest results of a UK trial show. The scientists behind the study said the findings “pull down the curtain on the era of Type 2 diabetes as an inevitably progressive disease”. Significant weight loss is closely linked with sustaining remission of the condition, they suggest. Around 300 people in Scotland and Tyneside with Type 2 diabetes were recruited for the trial, funded by charity Diabetes UK. Half received standard diabetes care from their GP and half were placed on a weight management programme. This involved a diet of around 800 calories per day for up to five … [Read more...] about Low-calorie diet ‘can reverse Type 2 diabetes for at least two years’

Abby is an 11-year-old sea otter found splashing around the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CaliforniaAccording to the Los Angeles Times, she is one of five otters at the facility who serve as surrogate moms to orphaned otter pups. A 13-year-old aspiring scientist from Schwenksville has revealed a potential public health concern at several parks in Montgomery County. Devyn Stek, a student at St. Teresa of Calcutta School, became the youngest researcher ever to present a study at ID Week in San Francisco last month. The teen collaborated with University of Colorado biostatistician Misoo Ellison to investigate the presence of the parasite Toxocara spp, according to Contagion Live. The roundworms typically find hosts in dogs (T canis) and cats (T cati), though humans and other animals can also serve as reservoirs. Human ingestion of Toxocara eggs can potentially lead to an infection known as toxocariasis. The condition often has no symptoms and dissipates on its own, but severe cases can cause a variety of health issues, particularly in children. Different forms of the infection can cause weight loss, fatigue, fever and even blindness if second-stage larvae travel to the eyes. Stek collected 36 soil samples at … [Read more...] about Teen’s science experiment uncovers roundworm contamination at Montgomery County parks
MOST 12-year-old girls spend their free time doing homework or watching TV... not shooting wild rabbits from the back of a pick-up truck. But for "preppers" like Lakota Douglas, hunting is just part of daily life - another chore to keep her family going as they wait for the apocalypse. Lakota lives in a trailer in the shadow of Colorado's Rocky Mountains, a spot picked out over 10 years ago by her grandfather, Rodney Cook, who fears America may be on the verge of collapse. And a growing number of people have looked at the state of the world and decided that they agree with him - taking steps to join the movement of preppers: people who are actively prepared for the collapse of society and the apocalypse. Until recently, they've been largely thought of as a - quite literally - underground community, but prepping is finally going mainstream. And now a new BBC documentary, Stacey Dooley Investigates: Face to Face with Armageddon, aims to lift the blast-proof lid on this paranoid … [Read more...] about Tomahawks in the wardrobe, 12-year-olds firing guns and pet owners spending thousands on survival gear for their dogs…… meet the preppers waiting for the apocalypse
