Anti-Roma protests take place in Bulgarian city of Gabrovo

· April 12, 2019 ·

Updated 5:09 am CDT, Friday, April 12, 2019 SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) — Protests against the Roma community have taken place in the northern Bulgarian city of Gabrovo, sparked by an alleged attack by Roma men on a shopkeeper. Nine people were arrested and three reported injured Thursday evening during the latest clashes between protesters and police. Deputy Prime Minister Tomislav Donchev, a former Gabrovo mayor, visited the city to appeal for calm, but was booed by the crowd. Some Roma parents are keeping their children out of school, fearing for their safety if they leave their neighborhood. Donchev said ethnic tensions in Gabrovo have existed for years. A decision was made recently to demolish derelict houses, often used illegally by Roma. Roma, or Gypsies, make up around 5-9% of Bulgaria's population of 7 million and are among the most disadvantaged groups in the country. … [Read more...] about Anti-Roma protests take place in Bulgarian city of Gabrovo

Croatia Jews, Serbs, anti-fascists, Roma gather at WWII site

· April 12, 2019 ·

Updated 7:31 am CDT, Friday, April 12, 2019 ZAGREB, Croatia (AP) — Jewish, Serb, anti-fascist and Roma groups in Croatia have commemorated the victims of a World War II death camp, boycotting the official ceremonies for the fourth year in a row over what they say is government inaction against neo-Nazi sentiments in the European Union country. Hundreds on Friday gathered in silence at the memorial center at Jasenovac to pay their respects to the tens of thousands of people killed in death camps run by Croatia's pro-Nazi puppet state. Commemorations mark the attempted escape in April 1945 of 1,073 prisoners from the Jasenovac camp when hundreds were killed. The Croatian government will hold a separate commemoration ceremony on Sunday. The head of Croatia's Jewish Community, Ognjen Kraus, says "nothing has changed in the past year, the situation is even worse." … [Read more...] about Croatia Jews, Serbs, anti-fascists, Roma gather at WWII site

Roma leave 2 Russian villages after fatal brawl

· June 17, 2019 ·

Updated 3:37 pm CDT, Monday, June 17, 2019 MOSCOW (AP) — Russian officials say all the Roma families in two villages have left after a large brawl that left one person dead. Police said 28 people were detained in connection with the fight in the village of Chemodanovka, which is about 550 kilometers (330 miles) southeast of Moscow. The cause of the fight between Roma and residents of other ethnicities hasn't been determined. Some Russian media reports said it developed from a children's quarrel. The RIA-Novosti news agency quoted Chemodanovka council leader Sergei Fadeev on Monday saying all of the Roma villagers from there and the neighboring settlement of Lopatki had departed. He denied earlier reports of their being forced out. Dina Cheremushkina, a spokeswoman for the regional governor, said about 130 Roma houses were emptied, according to RIA-Novosti. … [Read more...] about Roma leave 2 Russian villages after fatal brawl

Salah’s prolific season at Liverpool surprises Roma President

· April 24, 2018 ·

(Reuters) – Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah’s prolific season since leaving AS Roma has come as a surprise to the Italian Serie A club’s President James Pallotta. Salah, who returned to the Premier League last year, has scored 41 goals in all competitions for Liverpool this season and is looking to add to his tally against his former side in the first leg of the Champions League semi-finals on Tuesday. In an interview with ESPN, Pallotta said Salah’s exceptional numbers were a revelation. “The reason is probably because we utilised him differently than Liverpool have. They figured out the best way to utilise him,” Pallotta said. “At the time, we had him as a winger and you got (Edin) Dzeko in the middle and Dzeko’s scoring 36 goals himself last year, so it’s not like we didn’t have someone in there tearing up the league last year. “Where I’m surprised, is how great he (Salah) is finishing… now you get the … [Read more...] about Salah’s prolific season at Liverpool surprises Roma President

Camp cleared as Italy’s far-right puts spotlight on Roma community

· June 29, 2018 ·

By Cristiano Corvino ROME (Reuters) – It may be a coincidence, but Rome’s city authorities are clearing 450 people out of an official Roma camp weeks after the new far-right interior minister, Matteo Salvini, said Italy’s Roma should be counted and, if they are foreign, expelled. The authorities say the clearance is routine; that the lease for the land has expired and it has tried without success to get the residents, also known as “gypsies” or “nomads”, to move elsewhere, including to migrant shelters. The residents, though, say the camp – where they have lived in pre-fabricated cabins provided by the municipality – is their home and that the alternatives offered either do not work or would divide families. And they blame Salvini. “While I was sleeping with my children and my wife this morning, the police knocked at my door. They woke me up, to get us out of the container that belongs to the city,” said Zarko Hadzovic, … [Read more...] about Camp cleared as Italy’s far-right puts spotlight on Roma community
