An American anarchist who went by the name John Galton was shot dead at his home in the Mexican resort of Acapulco, sending shivers through a tightknit anti-establishment community of expatriates that organizes events in the violence-torn retreat with seminars on topics such as how to make money via cryptocurrencies. A woman describing herself as John's partner, Lily, said via social media that she saw the gunmen go straight for John and his friend Jason Henza, 43. Henza made it to a private hospital with bullet wounds in an armpit, leg and hand. The hospital said he checked out that same day. Mexican police found equipment to process drugs, glass pipes and marijuana plants at the home. Lily and Henza both posted videos to Facebook immediately after the shooting. Lily screamed: "I really need help! Somebody please come." In his post, a bearded Henza said in a blood-smattered T-Shirt: "We were attacked. I've been shot three times. I'm not doing so good." Prior to the … [Read more...] about American Anarchist ‘John Galton’ Shot Dead in Acapulco

Is There Acapulco Gold in Pot Trademarks? Applications Are High
A decision by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to create a category for medical marijuana has fired up companies seeking protection for their product and business names.Soft drink makers want to trademark Canna Cola and Keef Cola, the Wall Street Journal reports. Companies seek to protect the names Budtrader and Pot-N. A candy maker hopes to trademark “Bhang, the original cannabis chocolate.”The category, established in April, was short-lived, however. After a Wall Street Journal reporter called, a spokesman said the pot classification would be removed, or “nipped in the bud,” in the words of the headline writer. The story notes that federal law bans marijuana sales, even though several states allow medical marijuana.Among the law firms helping file the registrations are Knobbe Martens in Southern California and Weide & Miller in Las Vegas. California, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), & Made in the USA Claims
Demi Lovato’s hit song “Made in the USA” recounts how her love for her boyfriend is both amazing and patriotic. If they had fallen in love in Paris or Acapulco, however, she may be facing an enforcement action by the FTC or a lawsuit in California under Business & Professions Code 17200 for false advertising. In 1997, the FTC developed a standard that products advertised as “Made in the USA” must be “all or virtually all” made in the US. All or virtually all significant parts and processing that go into the product must be of US origin. The FDA could also take action on a product under its domain based on misleading claims that misbrand products under the Food Drug & Cosmetic Act.As we have come to expect, California has a more stringent standard than the FTC. In California, a “Made in the USA” claim is not permitted if the “merchandise or any article, unit, or part thereof has been entirely or … [Read more...] about California, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), & Made in the USA Claims
‘We are watching you’
By Lizbeth Diaz CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico (Reuters) – Magda Rubio had just launched her campaign for mayor of a small city in northern Mexico, when a chilling voice came through her cell phone. “Drop out,” the caller warned, “or be killed.” It was the first of four death threats Rubio said she has received since January from the same well-spoken, anonymous man. She has stayed in the race in Guachochi, located in a mountainous region of Chihuahua state that is a key route for heroin trafficking. But two armed body guards now follow her round the clock. “At 2 a.m., you start to get scared, and you say, ‘something bad is going on here’,” she said. An explosion of political assassinations in Mexico has cast a pall over nationwide elections slated for July 1, when voters will choose their next president and fill a slew of down-ballot posts. At least 82 candidates and office holders have been killed since the electoral season kicked off in … [Read more...] about ‘We are watching you’
