20,000 migrant Lao workers register with Thai authorities
VIENTIANE (Vientiane Times/Asia News Network): Improved cooperation between Lao and Thai labour authorities has enabled Thailand’s labour ministry to register almost 20,000 undocumented Lao migrant workers. Lao nationals working in Thailand have encountered difficulties in getting information about proper registration with Thai authorities because of the Covid-19 outbreak, which has slowed their registration on the Thai government’s books, labour officials say. However, Lao labour authorities expect the registration process to move at a faster pace following an employment cooperation agreement between the two countries. Over the next month, labour authorities in both Laos and Thailand will do more to register and provide assistance to Lao workers in Thailand who do not have legal documentation, following an announcement on the matter by the Prime Minister’s Office. Officials from Laos’ Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare plan to go to Thailand to help register and formalise … [Read more...] about 20,000 migrant Lao workers register with Thai authorities

A question of K-pop
LEE YOUNG-HEE The author is a Tokyo correspondent of the JoongAng Ilbo. “KCON 2022 Premier in Tokyo” held at the “Makuhari Messe” in Event 32 Hall near Tokyo on May 14 and 15 was a unique event. The event, hosted by Korean company CJ ENM, was to introduce Korean culture to Japan, but interestingly, none of the participating artists were Korean. The 6 idol teams that appeared in the concert and fan meeting were all formed through Mnet’s audition program “Produce 101 Japan,” season 1 and 2 winners JO1 and INI and 4 teams made of participants who did not make the final round. All the members were Japanese, and only INI had one Chinese member. The reporters who came to cover the event were in agony. Should I refer to these teams as “K-pop idols” or “J-pop idols”? Watching the performance, I felt more confused. They presented hip-hop-based strong beats, perfectly synced choreography and typical Korean idol music and performances, but the lyrics were in Japanese. It is quite … [Read more...] about A question of K-pop
Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia has opened a long-anticipated new phase of the war in Ukraine , launching its eastern offensive in a bid to seize the country's industrial heartland. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the move Tuesday , saying the Kremlin's goal was to achieve the “full liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” which together make up the Donbas region. The full-scale assault on Ukraine's east came as the last fighters in Mariupol, the besieged port city that is crucial to Moscow's goals, continued to hold out despite a new Russian deadline to surrender. It also followed Russian strikes across the country, hitting supply lines and military infrastructure and killing at least seven people in the western city of Lviv . The United States is expected to announce another package of military aid, which is expected to be similar in size to the $800 million one the administration … [Read more...] about Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict

Sweden Rolls Out Fifth Covid Shot
STOCKHOLM (AP) – Sweden is recommending a fifth COVID-19 vaccine dose for people with an increased risk of becoming seriously ill, including pregnant women and anyone aged 65 and over, authorities said Tuesday, adding that the country must “be prepared for an increased spread during the upcoming autumn and winter season.” “The vaccine is our strongest tool for preventing serious illness and death,” Swedish Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren said, adding the pandemic is not over. As of Sept. 1, Sweden recommends that another booster shot is given to people aged 65 and older and people over 18 in the risk groups. The Swedish Public Health Agency said the latter includes pregnant women, people with weakened immune systems and people with heart and lung disease. “In general, the risk of serious illness is assessed as low for adults under the age of 65 who have been vaccinated with three doses, but the risk increases with age and varies within the group,” agency chief Karin … [Read more...] about Sweden Rolls Out Fifth Covid Shot
