Why we’re lining up for “Top Gun: Maverick” this summer
I was in no rush to see the sequel to a 36-year-old movie that was an old favorite of mine. And in no rush for the same reasons I didn't look forward to seeing other sequels of American pop cinema classics: Think Jaws: The Revenge , Little Fockers or Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps . Because movie sequels are generally uninspired commercial enterprises and generally come out poorly, for both the studios and the fans. I figured I'd wait for Top Gun: Maverick to make its way to the streaming world and watch it in the comfort of my home. But soon the reviews started streaming in from friends. Again and again, they told me the movie wasn't just good but very good. That it was packed with real emotion and excitement. That it was an old-fashioned, crowd-pleasing blockbuster. Some friends told me it was better than the original, something I hadn't heard about a sequel since Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part II . That's why we lined up—and are still lining up—to see … [Read more...] about Why we’re lining up for “Top Gun: Maverick” this summer
How Harry, Meghan paved the way for William, Charles to be more political
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle 's comments after moving to the United States may have helped Prince William and Prince Charles usher in a new era of political royalty. Britain's next two kings have recently attracted headlines with the kind of political commentary that is supposed to be forbidden among royals, tackling explosive subjects including racism and immigration. However, the landscape of British royal reporting has been transformed during the seismic years in which Harry and Meghan left the United Kingdom for a new life in the U.S. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex walked down paths not trodden by working members of the British royal family within months of launching their new lives outside the palace. The allegations of racism made during their interview with Oprah Winfrey also created pressure on the royal family to demonstrate they could serve the U.K. as a whole, including its diverse population and the 54 nations of the Commonwealth. Prince Harry and Meghan … [Read more...] about How Harry, Meghan paved the way for William, Charles to be more political

Pope Francis: Russia’s War Against Ukraine Was ‘Perhaps Somehow Provoked’
Pope Francis sparked outrage last month by suggesting NATO might be to blame for Russia’s war in Ukraine—and now he’s dug himself in deeper with newly released remarks saying the war may have been “provoked.” The pontiff made the comments in a conversation with editors of Jesuit media last month that was released in full by the journal Civilta Cattolica on Tuesday. A transcript of the interview shows Pope Francis condemning the “brutality and ferocity” of Russian troops while at the same time appearing to argue that Russian aggression is not the main problem in the war. “What we are seeing is the brutality and ferocity with which this war is being carried out by the troops, generally mercenaries, used by the Russians.… But the danger is that we only see this, which is monstrous, and we do not see the whole drama unfolding behind this war, which was perhaps somehow either provoked or not prevented,” he was quoted saying. ‘Fire Island’ actor Tomás Matos ties success to being ‘unapologetically authentic’

But when you werk," Matos — who identifies as nonbinary and uses the pronouns they/them, said, " nobody can tell you what you’re doing because you are fab. Period!” Matos is stealing scenes in “Fire Island,” now streaming on Hulu. “It feels really good for it to be out, and not only out but so well received by everyone. The love is definitely pouring out this Pride, which feels really good.” A graduate of New York City’s LaGuardia High School for the Performing Arts — long associated with the popular 1980 movie "Fame" — Matos is already leaving their mark in the entertainment industry. “Thankfully, because of the training I received at LaGuardia, I didn’t need to get a college degree in the … [Read more...] about ‘Fire Island’ actor Tomás Matos ties success to being ‘unapologetically authentic’
