Venugopal on August 2 accused the Maharashtra State Board of Waqfs in the Supreme Court of "targeting" him through a "serious, uncalled for and unwarranted attempt" to remove him as its lawyer at the last minute in a sensitive case. The Board, a statutory body, superintends Waqf property running into acres and worth crores in the State. Mr. Venugopal was representing the Board in a batch of petitions on the seminal question whether every charitable trust established by a person practising Islam was necessarily a Waqf Waqf is the property given in the name of God for religious and charitable purposes. Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has removed a local prosecutor over his public statements refusing to enforce laws restricting abortion or gender-affirming surgeries for children, while taking a lax approach to crime. DeSantis announced on Thursday the extraordinary action against Andrew Warren, state attorney for Hillsborough County, for seeking "veto power over what the entire state decides on these important issues." Warren responded by calling it a dangerous and "illegal overreach" to further the political ambitions of the governor, who is considered a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate. The move by DeSantis is one of the most aggressive taken by Republicans and other who have called for the removal of progressive prosecutors accused of selectively enforcing the law for political purposes. US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday he had “personally approved” the dramatic raid on Donald Trump’s Florida estate and, in a highly unusual move, was requesting the warrant justifying the search be made public. Harvey to hear the appeal of the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson was suspended this week by independent disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson, who concluded he violated the league's personal conduct policy after being accused of sexual misconduct by two dozen women in Texas. The league, which had been pushing for an indefinite suspension for Watson, wanted further discipline and appealed Robinson's ruling on Wednesday. The group leading the charge against Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon allegedly received an envelope containing a white powder and hate symbols Thursday. Recall Gascon immediately called the Los Angeles Police Department when the envelope and its contents were discovered, the group’s spokesperson Tim Lineberger told the New York Post. Curse words and swastikas were drawn out along with the white powdery substance in one of the return petition envelopes, leading to an evacuation of staff members, Lineberger continued.
