DeSantis ousts state attorney over abortion, gender-affirming care stance
Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida has removed a local prosecutor over his public statements refusing to enforce laws restricting abortion or gender-affirming surgeries for children, while taking a lax approach to crime. DeSantis announced on Thursday the extraordinary action against Andrew Warren, state attorney for Hillsborough County, for seeking "veto power over what the entire state decides on these important issues." Warren responded by calling it a dangerous and "illegal overreach" to further the political ambitions of the governor, who is considered a potential 2024 Republican presidential candidate. The move by DeSantis is one of the most aggressive taken by Republicans and other who have called for the removal of progressive prosecutors accused of selectively enforcing the law for political purposes. Speaking at a press conference in Tampa, DeSantis was joined by local law enforcement officials who aired their frustrations with Warren, who was first elected to the … [Read more...] about DeSantis ousts state attorney over abortion, gender-affirming care stance
Amid Row, US Attorney General Says He ‘Personally Approved’ Trump Home Search
US Attorney General Merrick Garland said Thursday he had “personally approved” the dramatic raid on Donald Trump’s Florida estate and, in a highly unusual move, was requesting the warrant justifying the search be made public. The country’s top prosecutor did not reveal the reason for the unprecedented search of the home of a former US president, and condemned “unfounded attacks” on the FBI and the Justice Department that followed it. “I personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant,” Garland told reporters in his first public statement since Monday’s raid. “The department does not take such a decision lightly.” While noting that “ethical obligations” prevented him detailing the basis of the raid, Garland said he had asked a Florida judge to unseal the warrant because Trump had publicly confirmed the search and there is “substantial public interest in this matter.” Trump, who has a copy of the search warrant but has — so far — declined to reveal its contents, has … [Read more...] about Amid Row, US Attorney General Says He ‘Personally Approved’ Trump Home Search

Mr. Trump arrived at state Attorney General Letitia James' offices in a motorcade shortly before 9 a.m., announcing more than an hour later that he "declined to answer the questions under the rights and privileges afforded to every citizen under the United States Constitution.” “I once asked, ‘If you’re innocent, why are you taking the Fifth Amendment?' Now I know the answer to that question,” the statement said. “When your family, your company, and all the people in your orbit have become the targets of an unfounded politically motivated Witch Hunt supported by lawyers, prosecutors and the Fake News Media, you have no choice.” Also Read Trump says FBI agents raided his Florida home As vociferous as Mr. Trump has been in defending … [Read more...] about Donald Trump says he took Fifth Amendment in New York attorney general probe

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 CLEVELAND (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has chosen former New Jersey Attorney General Peter C. Harvey to hear the appeal of the six-game suspension for Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson was suspended this week by independent disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson, who concluded he violated the league's personal conduct policy after being accused of sexual misconduct by two dozen women in Texas. The league, which had been pushing for an indefinite suspension for Watson, wanted further discipline and appealed Robinson's ruling on Wednesday. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the appeal gave the power back to Goodell to enact punishment but he instead chose Harvey, currently a partner at a law firm in New York. In noting his qualifications, the league said Harvey “has deep expertise in criminal law, including domestic violence and sexual assault, … [Read more...] about Former attorney general to hear appeal of Watson suspension
Florida AG Ashley Moody: Woke State Attorney Andrew Warren Would Not Enforce the Law
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody (R) spoke at a Thursday press conference following Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) announcing the suspension of State Attorney Andrew Warren as part of his stand against George-Soros backed woke prosecutors who are putting communities in danger across the country. “I know the folks behind me that wake up every day and put on a gun and a badge and a bulletproof vest appreciate this strong leadership, where you are seeing an eradication of stability and safety around our nation, starting with our border into our large cities into our states,” Moody said as she stood at the podium, flanked by law enforcement. “It’s because an executive who has been trusted to enforce and execute laws has abandoned that responsibility. When you see record overdoses, record crime, it is because an executive does not care enough to stand strong and do his or her job in our state,” Moody continued, identifying DeSantis as the state’s top executive who is constitutionally … [Read more...] about Florida AG Ashley Moody: Woke State Attorney Andrew Warren Would Not Enforce the Law
