Now five years later Eve is a proud student children’s nurse. And her mum Natalie, 44, who suffered shrapnel injuries, is at the same university, training to become a mental health nurse. Chicago curfew tightened after killing near ‘Bean’ sculpture

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 CHICAGO (AP) — A clamp-down on Chicago teens’ access to a popular downtown park and an earlier weekend curfew following the fatal shooting of a teenager in the tourist attraction has revived longstanding accusations that City Hall prioritized the city’s sparkling lakefront and downtown over West and South side neighborhoods where hundreds have been killed or hurt by gun violence. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, though, said the response was part of an effort to keep visitors and Chicagoans safe, including the city’s youth. Lightfoot ordered that minors would not be allowed in Millennium Park unless accompanied by an adult after 6 p.m. from Thursdays through Sundays. On Monday, Lightfoot said she also had moved up the city’s 11 p.m. weekend curfew to 10 p.m. “We need to make sure they are safe and importantly that our young people understand and … [Read more...] about Chicago curfew tightened after killing near ‘Bean’ sculpture

Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes

May 12, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Israel advanced plans for the construction of more than 4,000 settler homes in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, a rights group said, a day after the military demolished homes in an area where hundreds of Palestinians face the threat of expulsion. It was a jolting illustration of Israel's policies in the territory it has occupied for nearly 55 years. Critics, including three major human rights groups, say those policies amount to apartheid, a charge Israel rejects as an attack on its very legitimacy. Hagit Ofran, an expert on the settlements at the anti-settlement watchdog group Peace Now, said a military planning body approved 4,427 housing units at a meeting on Thursday that she attended. Israeli officials did not respond to requests for comment. It's the biggest advancement of settlement projects since the Biden administration took office. The White House opposes settlement construction and views it as an obstacle to any eventual peace agreement with the … [Read more...] about Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes

Whodunnit? When it comes to Wagatha Christie, we may never know

May 13, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Those nine legendary dot dot dots, that triple ellipsis typed out by Coleen Rooney before the fateful words “ Rebekah Vardy ’s account” intimate that she’d given this matter quite some consideration. That she’d hovered, finger on the trigger, for a long thrilling moment, before firing what she thought would be the fatal shot. Her Instagram sting operation had been going on for almost five full months by that point. Five full months to wonder where this deadly road might take her. She’d had all the days and nights she could possibly have needed to work through all the angles, to look down the many branches of history that would fork their way forward from that defining second, when she chucked that irretrievable stink bomb in to the players’ wives enclosure of English football’s VIP club. But even she, surely, did not see that she would be setting herself on this precise path. That it would lead to here, the witness box of the Royal Courts of Justice, where she’d be … [Read more...] about Whodunnit? When it comes to Wagatha Christie, we may never know

Palestinians mourn Israel’s creation amid outcry over funeral raid

May 15, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Palestinians rallied on Sunday to mark the "Nakba," or catastrophe, 74 years after Israel's creation, with condemnation spreading over a police raid on the funeral of a slain journalist. The annual demonstrations across the occupied West Bank, annexed east Jerusalem and inside Israel came with tensions high over the killing of 51-year-old Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh. The Palestinian-American was shot dead on Wednesday during an Israeli raid in Jenin, a West Bank flashpoint. A Palestinian militant wounded in clashes there, Daoud al-Zubaidi, died from his injuries in an Israeli hospital Sunday. Israeli police have vowed to investigate the chaos that marred the day of Abu Akleh's funeral, after television footage seen worldwide showed pallbearers struggling to stop the casket from toppling to the ground as baton-wielding police descended upon them, grabbing Palestinian flags. The scenes Friday sparked international condemnation, including from the United States, United … [Read more...] about Palestinians mourn Israel’s creation amid outcry over funeral raid

Madeleine McCann No.1 suspect Christian Brueckner ruled too dangerous to be freed

May 2, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner has failed in a bid to be let out of jail, we can reveal. The 45-year-old paedophile is currently serving a seven-year jail term for raping a pensioner in Praia da Luz, the Portuguese resort from which Madeleine went missing in 2007. He became eligible for parole after serving half of his sentence, with time spent on remand taken into account. But the panel were thought to judge him at high risk of reoffending. They concluded his “social prognosis” meant he had to stay behind bars in the northern German city of Kiel. The decision will be a relief to detectives probing his possible links to Madeleine’s disappearance.
