How to ease the transition to college when mental health is a concern

August 6, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

The move from high school to college can be a trying one, particularly for students with mental health concerns. But today there are ways to make it easier. "In the last few years, and especially since the pandemic began, campus resources for all students have proliferated, and ahead of coming to campus is when students should be connecting with the resources that they need," says Amy Gatto, director of research and evaluation at Active Minds, an organization that works to make talking about mental health on campus as natural as talking about physical health. A 2021 survey by the American College Health Association of close to 100,000 college students found that 16% of college men and 33% of college women had been diagnosed with anxiety, and 14% of college men and 25% of college women had been diagnosed with depression. A study published in June by the Healthy Minds Network - which conducts research on the mental health of college students - involving more than 350,000 … [Read more...] about How to ease the transition to college when mental health is a concern

How student debt cancelation would change our lives: 10 Americans

August 4, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

From skipping meals, losing sleep and being forced to go without required medical treatment: the weight of student debt plays a heavy toll on the everyday lives of many Americans. Those struggling with a crippling debt are eagerly awaiting a decision on whether the pause on student loan repayments will be extended once again at the end of August. Without an extension, they'll be forced to cope with making repayments amid a cost-of-living crisis and surging inflation . But a bigger question is whether President Joe Biden will forgive some of the $1.7 trillion in student loan debt collectively owed by about 45 million Americans. The president is considering forgiving $10,000 in federal student loan debt for most borrowers, according to a recent Bloomberg report. He is also weighing another extension on the payment pause—moves that aim to appeal to young voters ahead of the November midterm elections. But those plans fall short of what some Democrats and advocates have … [Read more...] about How student debt cancelation would change our lives: 10 Americans

Integrated PU colleges in Karnataka: Boon or bane?

August 5, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Gone are the days when students went from home to college to coaching centres during pre-university (PU) years. In the last few years, with PU colleges that offer integrated coaching classes mushrooming across the city, students spend close to 12 hours in colleges before going home. Many such colleges also offer boarding facilities and hence, for the better part of two years, students are engrossed in academics with little space for recreation. While there are many such centres up and running, government directives on them are far from clear. Additional training What are integrated PU colleges? While regular PU colleges offer the usual science, commerce and arts combinations, which are prescribed by the Department of Pre University Education (DPUE), integrated colleges offer additional training to prepare for competitive examinations like IIT – JEE, NEET, CET, CLAT, CPT and lately even UPSC. The trend of such colleges started in the city around 10 to 12 years ago as education … [Read more...] about Integrated PU colleges in Karnataka: Boon or bane?

Integrated PU colleges in Karnataka: Two sides of the story

August 5, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

For almost 30 years from the 1990s, the private coaching syndicate had a strong presence outside the college system. Students who enrolled in a PU college also attended private tuition either before or after college. Around 2010, there arose a nationwide massive awareness about all India entrance exams, such as IIT-JEE, AIPMT and CLAT, and the introduction of NEET in 2013 enhanced the competition. Preparing for these examinations became the sole purpose of almost all students who enrolled themselves for science courses in PU and it was this demand that contributed to the popularity of integrated PU colleges. Realising the need to make students prepare for competitive exams right from the first day of I PU, popular private coaching centres wanted to make students work for 10 – 12 hours with laser-sharp focus. This led many coaching centres to start integrated PU colleges. Lacking holistic approach Students who have a clear aim to crack the IIT-JEE or NEET only must join an … [Read more...] about Integrated PU colleges in Karnataka: Two sides of the story
