Delicate limb lengthening surgery performed in Visakhapatnam hospital

May 16, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

A young man, who has spent about 20 years of his life walking with difficulty due to a 2.5 cm variation between his right and left legs, is relieved now. Doctors at Apollo Hospital, Visakhapatnam, have corrected the deformity through a limb lengthening surgery. His parents, who hail from Himachal Pradesh, had settled at Rayagada in Odisha. The boy had a defect in his right leg, since birth. His parents ignored the problem, perhaps, due to fear that surgery could make even the other leg worse. The boy went through school and college and is now a techie in Pune. “The bone is fractured in controlled conditions and is elongated and allowed to heal. The bone can be elongated up to 6 cm without any complications. In this case, we needed only 2.5 cm, but the problem was the single artery going to the limb” Dr. Ravi Chandra, Paediatric orthopaedic surgeon “We performed the surgery in December 2021, and in 25 days the desired leg lengthening was achieved. The bone had healed itself in … [Read more...] about Delicate limb lengthening surgery performed in Visakhapatnam hospital

India Must Lead Quad Effort to Pull Out Sri Lanka from Clutches of China’s Debt Trap Diplomacy

May 18, 2022 by www.news18.com

The statement issued by Sri Lanka’s newly appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was nothing short of an intimation, nay confirmation, of the apocalyptic economic crisis that the island nation confronts. The numbers thrown by Mr Wickremesinghe are self-explanatory of the mess that he will need to clean up to put Sri Lanka back on track. Government revenues cover only 40 per cent of the expenditure being incurred. The fiscal deficit is around 13 per cent of GDP. The foreign exchange reserves are virtually non-existent. According to Wickremesinghe, “It is a challenge for the treasury to find USD 1 million.” Petrol stocks are down to just one day. Sri Lanka is looking at power cuts of around 15 hours a day because a quarter of the electricity is produced from oil which the government has no money to buy. There are huge shortages of medicines. Shortages of virtually every other commodity, including food, are inescapable. With the government being “compelled to print money” to pay … [Read more...] about India Must Lead Quad Effort to Pull Out Sri Lanka from Clutches of China’s Debt Trap Diplomacy

The United States is engaging with India over the issue of Ukraine and this will continue in the upcoming Quad summit in Japan next month, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters here. “We have had a number of engagements, as you know, with leaders in India about our approach to supporting the Ukrainians in this war, whether that is sanctions and the enormous sanctions package we’ve put in place or, of course, the assistance we’ve provided. We will convey the same sentiments in this meeting,” Psaki said. She was responding to a question on the Quad summit in Japan in May and how the issue of Ukraine would be raised or discussed. The Quad comprises Japan, India, Australia and the United States and the US Administration has said President Joe Biden will be meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi there. “This meeting is several weeks away, so a lot can certainly happen. NEW DELHI (AP) — A wall collapsed in a salt packaging factory in western India on Wednesday, killing at least 12 workers and injuring another 13, a government administrator said. The workers stocking salt in bags were found buried in the wall debris in the factory in Morbi district, 215 kilometers (135 miles) west of Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat state, said J.B. Patel, the district officer. The injuries of 13 workers, mostly fractured bones, were not life-threatening, Patel said. He also said that the rescue work was almost over. Other details were not immediately available. Authorities are investigating the cause of the wall collapse. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the deaths as heart-rending. "In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families. May the injured recover soon," he said. Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday laid out plans to bridge the real world and its digital universe of search, Maps and other services using new advances in artificial intelligence. At its annual Google I/O developer conference, the company previewed a feature that would let users take video of shelves of wine bottles at a store and ask its system to automatically identify options from Black-owned wineries. “This is like having a supercharged Ctrl+F for the world around you,” said Prabhakar Raghavan, a Google senior vice president, referring to the keyboard shortcut for finding something in a document. “You can search your whole world, asking questions any way and anywhere.” In the future, you'll be able to pan your camera, ask a question and see relevant information overlaid in the context of the world around you. Chennai’s young restaurateurs celebrate street food and home-style meals

May 16, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

In a plush, tree-lined bylane of Alwarpet, in a neighbourhood accustomed to buttery croissants and French- pressed coffee, sits a little corner mess where you can have unlimited portions of rice, dried fish sambal, meen kuzhambu, chicken curry, rasam, sambar, kootu and poriyal for just ₹160. At lunch on a heat-stricken weekday, all five tables under a quietly humming AC are full. “It is heartening to see walk-ins from every demographic: from security guards to executives in huge SUVs,” says 30-year-old Vikram Reddy, one of the four entrepreneurs behind Kaaram Karaikudi Mess. He pauses mid-conversation to bid adieu to an elderly guest with a cane, being helped out gently by a young companion — the duo has been a regular ever since the two-week-old restaurant opened. Repeat customers — and the patronage of established chefs and some celebrities — are Vikram’s proof that he was right in his basic business premise: “Everyone misses simple traditional food, and wants to eat it in … [Read more...] about Chennai’s young restaurateurs celebrate street food and home-style meals

Satwiksairaj over the moon

May 17, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

For R. Satwiksairaj it has been a dream come true! “In 2015, when my teammates were training, I went to watch the semifinals and final of the Thomas Cup in China. And, believe me, I was cheering for Indonesia which was facing Korea in the final. Then, I wondered whether I would ever be on the court playing the Thomas Cup final,” said a delighted Satwik in an exclusive chat with The Hindu on his return from Bangkok after playing a lead role along with his doubles partner Chirag Shetty in India winning the Thomas Cup for the first time. “Winning the Thomas Cup is a different kind of feeling” “For me Bangkok has always been a lucky venue. That was where I won my first ABC medal (silver in mixed doubles and bronze in doubles in the under-15 category), our (he and Chirag) first Super Series title when we won the  Thailand Open Super 500 title in 2019 to name a few,” he said. “So when we were facing Indonesia, there was that gut feeling and the burning desire to be the champions … [Read more...] about Satwiksairaj over the moon

Putin is Winning the Energy War as Europe’s Paradoxical Drama on Russian Gas Imports Rages on

May 18, 2022 by www.news18.com

Amid the Russia-Ukraine war and all the ruckus about Russian energy imports, the West is emerging as a champion in doublespeak. Even as it wished for India to not buy Russian oil at a discount, the West has vacillated on the issue of buying Russian energy itself, leading to an increase in imports. The European Union is in a particularly hypocritical position, divided by Russia’s ‘blackmailing’ tactics. Not only is it far from weaning off Russian energy imports, but the EU is also on its way to complying with Russia’s ruble payment condition. If media headlines are anything to go by, if at one moment the EU is imposing sanctions on Russian gas imports so as to not bankroll Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, in the next moment, it is scrambling to circumvent the same sanctions and bankroll Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Indeed, the bloc is divided over how far its boycott of Russian gas can go and Putin’s “pay in ruble” curveball did the rest of the damage. But after hoodwinking EU countries … [Read more...] about Putin is Winning the Energy War as Europe’s Paradoxical Drama on Russian Gas Imports Rages on
