A young man, who has spent about 20 years of his life walking with difficulty due to a 2.5 cm variation between his right and left legs, is relieved now. Doctors at Apollo Hospital, Visakhapatnam, have corrected the deformity through a limb lengthening surgery. His parents, who hail from Himachal Pradesh, had settled at Rayagada in Odisha. The boy had a defect in his right leg, since birth. His parents ignored the problem, perhaps, due to fear that surgery could make even the other leg worse. The boy went through school and college and is now a techie in Pune. “The bone is fractured in controlled conditions and is elongated and allowed to heal. The bone can be elongated up to 6 cm without any complications. In this case, we needed only 2.5 cm, but the problem was the single artery going to the limb” Dr. Ravi Chandra, Paediatric orthopaedic surgeon “We performed the surgery in December 2021, and in 25 days the desired leg lengthening was achieved. The bone had healed itself in … [Read more...] about Delicate limb lengthening surgery performed in Visakhapatnam hospital

Google Unveils Artificial Intelligence Tool for Real-World Searches
Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday laid out plans to bridge the real world and its digital universe of search, Maps and other services using new advances in artificial intelligence. At its annual Google I/O developer conference, the company previewed a feature that would let users take video of shelves of wine bottles at a store and ask its system to automatically identify options from Black-owned wineries. “This is like having a supercharged Ctrl+F for the world around you,” said Prabhakar Raghavan, a Google senior vice president, referring to the keyboard shortcut for finding something in a document. “You can search your whole world, asking questions any way and anywhere.” In the future, you'll be able to pan your camera, ask a question and see relevant information overlaid in the context of the world around you. Live updates | Report: Turkey lists Sweden, Finland demands
By The Associated Press ANKARA, Turkey — A pro-government Turkish newspaper says Turkey has drawn up a list of 10 demands it will reportedly ask Sweden and Finland to meet before it can approve their NATO membership. The list published by Sabah newspaper on Wednesday calls on the two countries to stop any financial support to groups linked to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party as well as to Syrian Kurdish fighters whom Ankara views as extensions of the banned group. There are also demands that these countries halt contacts with members of the Syrian Kurdish group. Sabah said Turkey furthermore wants the two countries to “expedite” extradition proceedings for suspects wanted by Turkey on terror charges. The list also includes a demand that Sweden clamps down on what Sabah called a “disinformation” campaign against Turkey led by followers of Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, who Ankara claims was behind a coup attempt in 2016. Many followers of the Gulen movement have fled to Sweden. … [Read more...] about Live updates | Report: Turkey lists Sweden, Finland demands
Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
When a shooter attacked a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, over the weekend, its security guard tried to stop him. At least one of his shots hit the gunman, but it didn’t stop the deadly rampage because the gunman was wearing body armor. Ten Black people died in the racist massacre, including security guard Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police officer hailed as a hero. It’s the latest mass shooting in which the gunman apparently came prepared for anyone trying to stop him with a gun. At least 21 mass shooters over the last four decades have worn some kind of body armor — and the majority of those were within the last 10 years, according to a database maintained by The Violence Project, a nonpartisan research group that tracks gun violence. Among them: A massacre that killed 12 people and injured dozens more at a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012, and another in nearby Boulder that left 10 people dead at a supermarket last year. The shooter in Texas’s deadliest … [Read more...] about Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
Colorado, Nebraska jostle over water rights amid drought
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 17 OVID, Colo. (AP) — Shortly after daybreak on the high plains of northeastern Colorado, Don Schneider tinkers with seed-dispensing gear on a mammoth corn planter. The day’s task: Carefully sowing hundreds of acres of seed between long rows of last year’s desiccated stalks to ensure the irrigation water he's collected over the winter will last until harvest time. A two-hour’s drive eastward, Steve Hanson, a fifth-generation Nebraska cattle breeder who also produces corn and other crops, is preparing to seed, having stored winter water to help ensure his products make it to market. Like Schneider and countless others in this semi-arid region, he wants his children and grandchildren to be able to work the rich soil homesteaded by their ancestors in the 1800s. Schneider and Hanson find themselves on … [Read more...] about Colorado, Nebraska jostle over water rights amid drought

Google Unveils New 10-Shade Skin Tone Scale to Test AI for Bias
Alphabet Inc’s Google on Wednesday unveiled a palette of 10 skin tones that it described as a step forward in making gadgets and apps that better serve people of colour. The company said its new Monk Skin Tone Scale replaces a flawed standard of six colours known as the Fitzpatrick Skin Type, which had become popular in the tech industry to assess whether smartwatch heart-rate sensors, artificial intelligence systems including facial recognition and other offerings show colours bias. Tech researchers acknowledged that Fitzpatrick underrepresented people with darker skin. Reuters exclusively reported last year that Google was developing an alternative. The company partnered with Harvard University sociologist Ellis Monk, who studies colourism and had felt dehumanised by cameras that failed to detect his face and reflect his skin tone. In partnership with Dr. Ellis Monk, we’re releasing a new skin tone scale designed to be more inclusive of the full spectrum of skin tones — the next … [Read more...] about Google Unveils New 10-Shade Skin Tone Scale to Test AI for Bias
COVID in California: Latest news as Bay Area cases climb
The rise in the number of new coronavirus infections and hospitalizations in the Bay Area continues unabated, driven by fast-moving subvariants. Those new cases are once again wreaking havoc on the Bay Area’s restaurants , as the surge collides with an industry staffing shortage. The U.S. officially marked 1 million COVID-related deaths , a figure that is almost certainly an undercount. Latest updates: COVID shut down some of S.F.’s coolest hidden public spaces. It’s time to open them back up, says John King Even before the pandemic, some of the coolest public spaces in downtown San Francisco were easy to miss — perched on tall buildings or tucked inside towers, off the map unless you were in the know. Then came COVID-19. Now, even though workers are returning to the city’s downtown core, some of the best public spaces remain off-limits. We’re still living in harrowing times, no question. But at some point before too long, the city will need to give an official prod to … [Read more...] about COVID in California: Latest news as Bay Area cases climb
