Post-Roe, exceptions to state abortion bans won’t be easy to acquire

June 24, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

With Roe v. Wade overturned , exceptions to abortion bans — such as in the case of rape or incest, or for a pregnant person’s safety — are expected to be the only avenue to getting abortions in many states. But meeting the qualifications for those asterisks to the bans can be complex and traumatizing, experts say. For starters, exceptions for rape and incest are uncommon. The Guttmacher Institute , a research organization that supports reproductive rights, anticipates 26 states certain or likely to ban abortion now that there are no federal protections. Among those 26 states, there are about 41 abortion bans total, with some states having more than one ban, it said. Just 10 of the 41 bans have exceptions for rape and incest. In the states that do have rape and incest exceptions, requirements vary. Many, such as Utah, require victims of sexual assault to file a police report. Given that more than 2 out of 3 sexual assaults go unreported, according to the Rape, Abuse … [Read more...] about Post-Roe, exceptions to state abortion bans won’t be easy to acquire

Dems’ Hail Mary: Candidates Who Won’t Enforce Abortion Laws

June 28, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

In Arizona, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last Friday to end the right to an abortion had an immediate effect: within 24 hours, Planned Parenthood had suspended all abortion procedures in its clinics around the state. That’s because Arizona is one of five states with a law banning abortion before Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. In March of 2022, Arizona Republicans passed a new law banning abortion after 15 weeks—with no exceptions for rape or incest—that is scheduled to go into effect by September. There is considerable confusion in Arizona as to what the exact legal restrictions on abortion will be going forward. But the state’s 7 million residents are on track to be subjected to some of the strictest abortion laws in a post- Roe America—unless something changes. Kris Mayes is angling to be that something. A former Republican and longtime consumer lawyer, Mayes is the presumptive Democratic candidate for attorney general in Arizona, a formerly conservative … [Read more...] about Dems’ Hail Mary: Candidates Who Won’t Enforce Abortion Laws

Grandma saves pizza delivery man after he’s shot

June 27, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A grandmother provided help and care for a pizza delivery man who was shot several times Saturday evening in Joppa, Maryland. According to a release issued by the Harford County Sheriff's Office, officers received a report of a shooting. They found the victim, 24-year-old Da'Shawn Betterson, in a townhouse with several gunshot wounds to his lower body. Officials provided medical aid to Betterson, who was airlifted to a trauma center for non-life-threatening injuries. CBS affiliate station WJZ reported that Karen Rollins ordered dinner for her grandchildren. "I looked outside," she told the outlet. "I saw the pizza box, so I opened the door to get the food, and there was a young man out there jumping around." When Rollins asked Betterson if he was OK, she said he asked if she could help him, telling her that he had been shot. She took him into her home and called the police, who guided her through how to provide medical attention until officials arrived. ‘I just couldn’t be silent’: How American women decided the 2020 presidential race

November 8, 2020 by www.thestar.com.my

ARCHBALD, Pa (Reuters) - Marygrace Vadala's 82-year-old mother had been a fan of President Donald Trump since his days hosting the reality TV show "The Apprentice." She enthusiastically voted for him in 2016. But in the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, as the two watched daily White House briefings, Vadala's mom - Grace Webber - voiced her first doubts. "Why isn't he listening to the medical experts?" Vadala, a 48-year-old home care nurse, recalled Webber asking. Weeks later, Webber landed in the hospital with a gastrointestinal bleed. She soon contracted the coronavirus, spending nearly a month on a ventilator. In May, Vadala, a devout Catholic, said goodbye to Webber over FaceTime, clutching her mother's rosary beads. Vadala, who lives in a suburb of Scranton, Pennsylvania, had been a Republican all her life. But she concluded Trump lacked the "integrity and trustworthiness and responsibility" she was raised to value, and she wanted him out. She became a prominent … [Read more...] about ‘I just couldn’t be silent’: How American women decided the 2020 presidential race

Trump-Endorsed Candidate ‘Appalled’ When Fox News Host Mentions Drag Queen Story

June 28, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Kari Lake, the Trump-endorsed candidate for Arizona governor, was far from happy on Monday when Fox News anchor Bret Baier asked her about a report that linked her to drag queens. The interview, which was fairly tame on Baier’s end, began with Lake falsely claiming that the 2020 election was “fraudulent” and that President Joe Biden is “illegitimate.” Baier responded by playing a tape of Arizona House Speaker Rusty Bowers testifying before the House Jan. 6 committee last week that the election was not “rigged,” as she believed. “He is a Republican,” Baier said. “He is a Trump supporter . And that’s what he said.” “He is a RINO,” Lake replied. “And he hopefully will be defeated. He is an absolute RINO.” “I understand what you are saying,” Baier said later. “But there have been, as you know, more than 70 court cases where there was not evidence and there was not any state legislature or governor that failed to certify an election, including your own Republican Doug … [Read more...] about Trump-Endorsed Candidate ‘Appalled’ When Fox News Host Mentions Drag Queen Story

Will Raging Liberals Cause an Anti-Democrat Backlash?

June 28, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Democrats are betting that anger over the reversal of Roe v. Wade will take down Republicans in the 2022 midterms . This is a plausible, if desperate , hope. The theory is that the “winning” side of such a long struggle will now be pacified, while the “losing” side is energized and outraged. And abortion rights—with some limits— remain broadly popular on a national scale . The political calculus over the right’s biggest victory in a half-century is so scrambled that even former President Donald Trump is reportedly worried about this . But Republicans have a secret weapon: Democrats’ penchant for progressive overreach . We are already seeing signs at multiple levels—among activists, elite celebrities, and politicians. It raises the question: Could there be a backlash against the backlash? Let’s start with the most serious: activist overreach. Since May’s leak of Justice Samuel Alito’s draft opinion in the Dobbs case, pro-life crisis pregnancy centers … [Read more...] about Will Raging Liberals Cause an Anti-Democrat Backlash?
