WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (AP) — A jury on Monday convicted a man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of an Iowa State Patrol trooper last year. Michael Lang, 42, was also found guilty of attempted murder and assaulting a police officer for his actions on April 9, 2021, that killed 51-year-old patrol Sgt. Jim Smith in Grundy Center, a city of nearly 3,000 people about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northeast of Des Moines. He faces a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole when he's sentenced. Smith, a 27-year patrol veteran, was shot as he led a team of officers into Lang’s home in Grundy Center. Lang had barricaded himself inside the home after he assaulted another officer during a traffic stop that day, police said. Lang was also shot by officers but has recovered. During closing arguments, Assistant Iowa Attorney General Douglas Hammerand called Smith's killing premeditated and intentional, noting that Lang had kept police at bay for hours and that the … [Read more...] about Man convicted of murder in killing of Iowa state trooper

Byculla prison’s anganwadi leads the way
There are a total of 11 children of prisoners who are currently living inside the women’s jail in Byculla, with their mothers serving time. This is one of the few prisons leading the way for the anganwadi system to be instituted across the country. The landmark judgment delivered in 2006 by the Supreme Court of India in R. D. Upadhyay Vs. State of Andhra Pradesh had stated, “There shall be a crèche and a nursery attached to the prison for women where the children of women prisoners will be looked after… the prison authorities shall preferably run the said crèche and nursery outside the prison premises.” Based on years of advocacy work by Prayas, a project by the Centre for Criminology and Justice of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), the first anganwadi for children living in prison was set up at the Byculla Central Jail outside the prison premises in 2012, under the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS). Since then, seven more anganwadis have been set up in … [Read more...] about Byculla prison’s anganwadi leads the way
Georgia parole board declines to halt killer’s execution
ATLANTA (AP) — Georgia's parole board on Monday declined to halt the execution of a man who killed an 8-year-old girl 46 years ago. Virgil Delano Presnell Jr. killed the girl and raped her 10-year-old friend after abducting them as they walked home from school in Cobb County, just outside Atlanta, on May 4, 1976. He is scheduled to die by injection of the sedative pentobarbital at the state prison in Jackson at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The parole board held a closed-door meeting to discuss his case on Monday. As is customary, the board did not explain its decision to deny clemency. If the execution proceeds, Presnell will be the first person put to death in Georgia this year and the seventh nationwide. A lawyer for Presnell had argued that he is “profoundly brain damaged” and didn’t understand the harm he was causing the two girls. He is deeply sorry for the pain he caused and wishes he could “take it all back,” attorney Monet Brewerton-Palmer wrote in a clemency application submitted to … [Read more...] about Georgia parole board declines to halt killer’s execution
UP turns into a fortress ahead of Ayodhya verdict
A thick security blanket has been thrown in UP with paramilitary forces keeping an aerial vigil of sensitive places, including the disputed site in Ayodhya, even as the High Court, which would be pronouncing the verdict, has been declared a “no-access zone” restricting the entry to only those connected with the case listed today. The intelligence network is on high alert throughout the State to monitor movement and activities of anti-social elements. As a preventive measure, aerial survey, including at night, of sensitive places, including Ram Janambhoomi complex in Ayodhya has been done, police sources said, adding the force deployment has been such that it would take minimum time for them to reach any troubled spot. All the security personnel deployed in Ayodhya and Faizabad have been equipped with tear gas shells and rubber bullets and the gazetted officers of various government departments have been asked to assist in policing. They have also been provided with rubber bullets … [Read more...] about UP turns into a fortress ahead of Ayodhya verdict
Pro-Trump pastor slams GOP for Rittenhouse sympathy amid Buffalo shooting
Republican reactions to the Buffalo mass shooting on Saturday have drawn harsh criticism from an unlikely source: a notably pro-Trump religious leader. Dr. Darrell Scott, an Ohio pastor and one of the earliest Evangelical Christian leaders to back former President Donald Trump 's 2016 campaign, released a statement Monday on Twitter , slamming the lack of sympathy that GOP lawmakers have shown for the victims of the Buffalo shooting. Scott also called out the positive reactions that Kyle Rittenhouse and Nicholas Sandman received on the Right. "The lack of expressions of sympathy for 10 dead AMERICAN victims of a mass shooting by the 'Leaders' of the Right is bad," Scott wrote on Twitter. "They expressed more sympathy for Kyle Rittenhouse, who killed 3 people, and Nicolas Sandmann, who got stared at, than for the 10 dead innocents in Buffalo." Scott co-founded the New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland and later served as an advisor for Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. … [Read more...] about Pro-Trump pastor slams GOP for Rittenhouse sympathy amid Buffalo shooting

Explained | The Gyanvapi Mosque-Kashi Vishwanath dispute and the current case
The story so far: On May 16, a local court in Varanasi directed the district administration to seal the spot in the Gyanvapi Masjid complex where a “shivling” was reportedly found during a court-mandated videography survey. The three-day survey, conducted under tight security, had concluded in the morning. The Supreme Court on May 13 had refused to grant an interim stay on the videography survey of the Gyanvapi mosque-Kashi Vishwanath temple complex in Varanasi, ordered by the local court. Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, however, had said on May 13 that the apex court would examine the documents in a plea requesting a halt to the videography, and later directed that the matter be listed before a Bench headed by Justice D.V. Chandrachud. This developments comes after a Varanasi court ordered the survey commissioner to resume videography inside the Gyanvapi mosque, directing that the inspection of the complex be completed by Tuesday. The dispute stems from a case filed by … [Read more...] about Explained | The Gyanvapi Mosque-Kashi Vishwanath dispute and the current case
Madeleine McCann suspect ‘had facial surgery months after her disappearance’
The prime suspect behind Madeleine McCann's disappearance spent thousands on facial surgery just months after the youngster vanished, it is claimed. A new TV investigation believes that convicted paedophile Christian Brueckner had his jaw reset and his teeth straightened shortly after Madeleine went missing. It is alleged that he had his "rabbit" teeth reset in September 2007, four months after the British four-year-old is thought to have been snatched in Praia da Luz in Portugal. He has denied any involvement and has not been charged. Witnesses claimed to have seen a man with protruding teeth loitering around the apartment where the McCann's were staying. He paid around £7,500 for the operation at a private dental clinic in his native Germany, it is alleged. An image released in 2008 shows a man with prominent front teeth ( Image: PA) It is claimed that suspect Christian Brueckner had dental surgery months after Madeleine's disappearance ( Image: PA … [Read more...] about Madeleine McCann suspect ‘had facial surgery months after her disappearance’
Opinion | Gyanvapi: Fading Minorityism in India and Zealots’ Last Stand
Turning on the news these days usually entails listening to shrieking voices over the Gyanvapi Mandir in Kashi. The mosque’s name is said to have come from an adjacent well, known as the Gyanvapi or the Well of Knowledge. The fact that it — ostensibly — is the only mosque in the world with a Sanskrit name eschews human logic, but it is what it is! The present-day debate over the Gyanvapi temple is not the first. Since 1194, the masjid has been a bone of contention. The so-called ‘flag-bearers’ of Nehruvian secularism, the ‘devotees’ of the Constitution and the ‘believers’ of Islam, especially the ‘chieftains’ — the clerics and ulema — have been caught on the wrong foot this time. Part of this trepidation arises from the fear of losing the VETO they have enjoyed hitherto. Part of this nervousness comes from the fact that the Constitution is being followed verbatim, upholding its true spirit — with no compromises. Using acrimonious and obscene language on national television no longer … [Read more...] about Opinion | Gyanvapi: Fading Minorityism in India and Zealots’ Last Stand
Donald Trump’s enemies flock to Brian Kemp in bid to thwart MAGA surge
Former President George W. Bush is reported to be attending a fundraiser in support of Georgia governor Brian Kemp in another example of recent and longtime enemies of Donald Trump publicly rallying against the MAGA president's endorsed candidate, David Perdue . Bush is scheduled to appear at a Texas fundraiser on Monday for Kemp at the home of real estate developer Harlan Crow, according to Politico. It was previously confirmed that former Vice President Mike Pence , whose relationship with Trump fell apart after the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot, would be supporting Kemp as the Republican candidate during a rally held one day before the May 24 primary. Charles Bullock, a professor of political science at the University of Georgia, said that with Kemp being "target number one" for Trump, Republicans who do not support the former president and his vision have seen that "the biggest blow they could deliver to begin freeing the GOP of Trumpism" would be to beat his candidate … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s enemies flock to Brian Kemp in bid to thwart MAGA surge
