WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (AP) — A jury on Monday convicted a man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of an Iowa State Patrol trooper last year. Michael Lang, 42, was also found guilty of attempted murder and assaulting a police officer for his actions on April 9, 2021, that killed 51-year-old patrol Sgt. Jim Smith in Grundy Center, a city of nearly 3,000 people about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northeast of Des Moines. He faces a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole when he's sentenced. Smith, a 27-year patrol veteran, was shot as he led a team of officers into Lang’s home in Grundy Center. Lang had barricaded himself inside the home after he assaulted another officer during a traffic stop that day, police said. Lang was also shot by officers but has recovered. During closing arguments, Assistant Iowa Attorney General Douglas Hammerand called Smith's killing premeditated and intentional, noting that Lang had kept police at bay for hours and that the … [Read more...] about Man convicted of murder in killing of Iowa state trooper

United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths
The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 hit 1 million on Monday, a once-unimaginable figure that only hints at the multitudes of loved ones and friends staggered by grief and frustration. The confirmed number of dead is equivalent to a 9/11 attack every day for 336 days. It is roughly equal to how many Americans died in the Civil War and World War II combined. It’s as if Boston and Pittsburgh were wiped out. It is hard to imagine a million people plucked from this earth, said Jennifer Nuzzo, who leads a new pandemic center at the Brown University School of Public Health in Providence, Rhode Island. Its still happening and we are letting it happen. Some of those left behind say they cannot return to normal. They replay their loved ones' voicemail messages. Or watch old videos to see them dance. When other people say they are done with the virus, they bristle with anger or ache in silence. 'Normal.' I hate that word, said Julie Wallace, 55, of Elyria, Ohio, who lost her husband to … [Read more...] about United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths
Asian Cardinal Says Hong Kong Is ‘Police State’ After Cardinal Zen Arrest
ROME, Italy – The president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences has condemned the arrest of Cardinal Joseph Zen, accusing Hong Kong of having become a “police state.” In a statement released this weekend, Myanmar Cardinal Charles Bo expressed his “profound concern about the situation for human rights and threats to religious freedom in Hong Kong.” “Hong Kong used to be one of Asia’s freest and most open cities,” Cardinal Bo said. “Today, it has been transformed into a police state. Freedom of expression, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly and association, and academic freedom have all been dismantled.” The cardinal also denounced “recent propaganda attacks against the Church in pro-Beijing media in Hong Kong, and of growing self-censorship among religious leaders due to the circumstances.” Myanmar Cardinal Charles Maung Bo arrives at St. Peter’s Basilica for a Mass celebrated by Pope Francis on February 15, 2015 in Vatican City, Vatican. Tens of thousands of dying Brits would get state pension early under charity’s plan
Tens of thousands of dying Brits should be given their state pension early, a charity demands today. Marie Curie called for terminally ill people to be given the £185.15-a-week payment to stop 25,000 working-age people per year dying in poverty. It comes after fast-track benefits were extended for the terminally ill as part of a pledge first made in 2019. Special Rules for End of Life now apply within 12 months of predicted death, rather than six months, for Universal Credit and Employment and Support Allowance. The Queen’s Speech confirmed plans to extend them to Personal Independence Payment too, likely next year. Marie Curie chief executive Matthew Reed called for ministers to go further and extend the state pension to the same group. Russian state TV threatens nuclear deployment if NATO bases appear in Finland
Russia has appeared to threaten nuclear deployment if NATO bases appear in Finland or Sweden. Finland will apply for membership in the NATO military alliance, the country's president Sauli Niinisto confirmed on Sunday. It is a historic policy shift largely prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine . According to the BBC , Russian state TV said on Finland and Sweden wanting to join Nato: "Their official reason is fear. But they’ll have more fear in Nato. "When Nato bases appear in Sweden & Finland, Russia will have no choice but to neutralise the imbalance & new threat by deploying tactical nuclear weapons." Moscow, which shares a 1,300km border with Finland, has said it would be a mistake for Helsinki to join the 30-strong transatlantic alliance and that it would harm bilateral ties. Pro-Trump pastor slams GOP for Rittenhouse sympathy amid Buffalo shooting
Republican reactions to the Buffalo mass shooting on Saturday have drawn harsh criticism from an unlikely source: a notably pro-Trump religious leader. Dr. Darrell Scott, an Ohio pastor and one of the earliest Evangelical Christian leaders to back former President Donald Trump 's 2016 campaign, released a statement Monday on Twitter , slamming the lack of sympathy that GOP lawmakers have shown for the victims of the Buffalo shooting. Scott also called out the positive reactions that Kyle Rittenhouse and Nicholas Sandman received on the Right. "The lack of expressions of sympathy for 10 dead AMERICAN victims of a mass shooting by the 'Leaders' of the Right is bad," Scott wrote on Twitter. "They expressed more sympathy for Kyle Rittenhouse, who killed 3 people, and Nicolas Sandmann, who got stared at, than for the 10 dead innocents in Buffalo." Scott co-founded the New Spirit Revival Center in Cleveland and later served as an advisor for Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. … [Read more...] about Pro-Trump pastor slams GOP for Rittenhouse sympathy amid Buffalo shooting
