A potential recession could hit San Francisco’s tech-centered economy hard. Though the city’s record low unemployment figure of 1.9% in May is “a pretty clear sign that we’re not in a recession at the moment,” there are potential risks, said Ted Egan, San Francisco’s chief economist. Egan sees the Federal Reserve’s plan to raise interest rates as the likeliest trigger for a recession. “Tech is probably the sector of the economy that’s more sensitive to interest rates,” Egan said. “That places us at greater risk.” Higher interest rates could discourage venture capitalists from investing in startups, dampening job growth and demand for other services. Global venture capital fundraising dropped around 27% in the second quarter compared with the first, according to preliminary data last week from research firm CB Insights. A prolonged downturn would be a major setback for San Francisco’s nascent economic recovery from the pandemic, which has already lagged other major … [Read more...] about Recession fears are rising. San Francisco’s Bar Agricole finally reopens after a two-year closure
More than two years after Bar Agricole temporarily closed its doors, owner Thad Vogler is finally ready to debut his celebrated San Francisco bar at its new home in the Mission District. Bar Agricole, now at 1540 Mission St., opens on Wednesday, Aug. 3, as a tasting room with a drink menu focused on single-origin spirits. A selection of single-origin whiskeys, gins, vermouths and agave spirits, among others, will highlight Bar Agricole’s new spirit line that’s expected to launch nationally later this year. “We are happy to be a part of the city again,” Vogler told SFGATE via email. “It’s scary but it feels like a privilege not to be taken for granted.” Tucked inside Bar Agricole’s new digs are light-colored wooden booths, wooden floors and a ceiling decorated with wooden panels, with blue light fixtures providing contrast. At the focal point of the tasting room is an aqua-tiled bar where bartenders will work with massive ice blocks for its roster of craft mixed cocktails, from … [Read more...] about San Francisco’s Bar Agricole finally reopens after a two-year closure
San Francisco Chinatown restaurant Dim Sum Corner vandalized a third time this year: ‘We’re over it.’
It’s been a frustrating couple of months for Jaynry Mak. She's spent thousands of dollars repairing damages made to Dim Sum Corner after back-to-back vandalism and theft this summer. The latest break-in happened on Thursday morning after surveillance footage showed a man smashing the glass entrance and stealing two cash registers. KPIX first reported the story. “Mentally and emotionally, we’re over it,” Mak, managing partner at Dim Sum Corner, told SFGATE. “We don’t look like a business that’s open, and it's had a significant impact on us.” The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Thursday when a man loitering outside Dim Sum Corner, at 601 Grant Ave., hurled an unidentified item at the door, according to Mak. Mak said when she saw surveillance footage later that morning, she saw that the man paced outside the restaurant for a few minutes before he entered the shop and ran out with two cash registers. Popular Malaysian eatery to reopen in San Francisco with a prix fixe menu
Azalina’s, a Malaysian restaurant beloved by food critics, is set to make its comeback on Sept. 1 in San Francisco's Tenderloin, according to KQED . It will be located inside the Aviary development at 499 Ellis St. The reincarnation of Azalina’s, owned and operated by Azalina Eusope, is a love letter to Malaysian culture and her family’s five generation-history of being street-food vendors. “My goal has always been the same — to honor every single aspect of my experience growing up,” Eusope told KQED. “Food is very emotional, right? I feel it whenever someone’s eating something, even the smell of it. It somehow triggers some kind of thing in our soul.” The project has been in the works since 2019, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. But the pandemic put a wrench in development plans. The first incarnation of Azalina’s opened in 2015 out of La Cocina, a food entrepreneur incubator program located in the Mission. By early 2019, Eusope was able to join a slew of … [Read more...] about Popular Malaysian eatery to reopen in San Francisco with a prix fixe menu
Former San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin says he won’t run for old job … this year
Recalled San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin announced he will not try to win back his old job ... this year at least. In a series of tweets , Boudin wrote, "I am choosing to put my family first: I will not be running for office in 2022." He cited his mother's death, his father returning home after more than 40 years of incarceration and an infant son as considerations that will preclude him from challenging his successor, Brooke Jenkins, who was appointed by Mayor London Breed after Boudin was recalled by voters June 7. People close to Boudin say that the former DA has not ruled out challenging Jenkins in 2023. By 2023, Jenkins will have an established policy record that may still be incomplete in 2022. (San Francisco law requires Jenkins, who is an interim DA as of now, to run for re-election in both 2022 and 2023). The early days of Jenkins' tenure have progressives fuming , and Boudin criticized Jenkins in his Twitter thread. "I am gravely concerned by … [Read more...] about Former San Francisco DA Chesa Boudin says he won’t run for old job … this year
StubHub closing San Francisco office, laying off employees
StubHub announced on LinkedIn last week it will be closing its San Francisco office by the end of the year. The tech company occupies space at 199 Fremont Street in SoMa, according to its corporate website. CEO Eric Baker wrote a letter to employees that he posted on LinkedIn, saying that the Shanghai office will close as well and that "the majority of our employees in both locations" will be laid off. Baker attributed the decision to the need to “streamline and optimize operations following the merger of StubHub and Viagogo” and claimed that “the business is performing strongly.” The company will center its corporate operations in New York City and Los Angeles, as well as “focus on in person participation” in its hubs in Utah, Switzerland, Ireland and Taiwan. The ticket marketplace has 161 employees based in the Bay Area, according to LinkedIn, though it’s unclear how many will lose their jobs. Eric Baker and Jeff Fluhr founded StubHub in San Francisco while they were … [Read more...] about StubHub closing San Francisco office, laying off employees
Mesmerizing sand art emerges at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 Visitors to San Francisco’s Ocean Beach might catch the latest work from artist Jim Denevan — if they’re quick. The Santa Cruz artist, who is known for his large-scale land compositions, was creating his latest piece Sunday, but it might not be there Monday. Like many of his works, this one is fleeting, created and then destroyed within hours or days. Pictures of the latest sand artwork show what appear to be conical mounds of sand arranged in a perfect circle, starting with smaller mounds and then getting bigger and bigger moving outward. This work is similar to one he created for an event earlier this year called Desert X AlUla in Saudi Arabia, which featured art installations by 15 artists. According to the press release, Denevan creates these land compositions without any type of measurement tools. He has been creating works at Ocean Beach since the ‘90s, … [Read more...] about Mesmerizing sand art emerges at San Francisco’s Ocean Beach
My advice after going to Day One of San Francisco’s Outside Lands: Go
LATEST August 6, 11:30 a.m . One-day tickets for Saturday have sold out but day passes are still available for Sunday. August 6, 9:30 a.m. San Francisco 's Outside Lands usually sells out. Not this year. One-day tickets are still available for Saturday and Sunday. If you're on the fence about whether to snag a last-minute ticket, my advice after spending the day there on Friday is go, even if you're underwhelmed by the lineup and only know a few bands playing (see our recommendations here ). The best part of my day was discovering acts I was unfamiliar with, like Zambian artist Sampa the Great who delivered a viscous swirl of hip-hop, rap, and Afrobeats drenched in jazz; and Fay Webster who soothed her audience with whispery, lovelorn indie-country ballads while playing guitar. Convinced? Now, you have to figure out how to get there. Lyft and Uber are expensive this weekend as demand drives up prices ( SFGATE wrote about the insane prices getting home Friday … [Read more...] about My advice after going to Day One of San Francisco’s Outside Lands: Go
San Francisco’s Biggest Companies To Pay ‘Homeless Tax,’ A Measure That Had Tech Leaders Butting Heads
A new corporate tax that is intended to raise $300 million a year from San Francisco’s largest companies and direct that money toward homeless services, was approved Nov. 6. Known as Proposition C, which passed with 59.9 percent of the vote, the measure is the largest corporate tax increase in San Francisco’s history, according to NBC . Many, however, are unhappy with how the tax is structured, like Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, although in the past he has made remarks like, “I want to help fix the homeless problem in SF and California.” With Proposition C approved, companies with more than $50 million in gross annual receipts will be taxed on any gross annual receipt revenue in San Francisco. The city already has a gross receipts tax , which is calculated by multiplying a company’s global revenue with an “apportionment percentage,” which is based on their business category . Because of this, businesses could pay an additional tax of between 0.175 percent to 0.69 percent. This … [Read more...] about San Francisco’s Biggest Companies To Pay ‘Homeless Tax,’ A Measure That Had Tech Leaders Butting Heads
