CNBC: Facebook Could ‘Learn’ About ‘Fighting Fake News’ From Chinese Social Media

March 24, 2017 by www.breitbart.com

A new piece from CNBC argues that Facebook could “learn a thing or two” about “fighting fake news” from heavily censored Chinese social media companies. The claim was made in a CNBC article about their recent interview with Charles Chao, CEO of the Chinese social media company Sina. Facebook might be able to learn a thing or two about fighting “fake news” from Chinese social media giant Sina . The company’s CEO, Charles Chao, spoke with CNBC this week about his battle against the spread of inaccurate information, and sought to dash allegations that his platform is really acting to stifle political dissent. In the interivew, Chao said that Chines companies have been tackling “fake news” and “fake information” long before the topic became a meme in the west. “Whatever you heard recently, like what Facebook started to do, and all these social problems, [people became aware] that they need to vet information: All these, we have been doing this for many years actually,” … [Read more...] about CNBC: Facebook Could ‘Learn’ About ‘Fighting Fake News’ From Chinese Social Media

Xi Jinping Visits Hong Kong to Celebrate 25 Years of Chinese Takeover

July 1, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Chinese dictator Xi Jinping arrived in Hong Kong via train on Thursday afternoon to attend Friday’s 25th-anniversary commemoration of the United Kingdom ceding control of the island to Beijing. As China’s state-run Global Times noted , this is Xi’s “first publicly announced visit outside the Chinese mainland since the COVID-19 epidemic started in early 2020.” The Global Times portrayed Xi’s visit as a victory lap after China broke its promise to respect Hong Kong’s legal autonomy and imposed a tyrannical “national security law” in August 2020 to crush the huge pro-democracy movement that erupted in 2019: Observers in Hong Kong and the mainland believed that Xi’s visit to Hong Kong amid an increasingly complex geopolitical environment sends a clear message to Hong Kong and to the world that the “one country, two systems” principle is beneficial to the country and to the city, and will be unswervingly upheld for the long term despite smears and doubts … [Read more...] about Xi Jinping Visits Hong Kong to Celebrate 25 Years of Chinese Takeover

Meghan’s entering politics not “ludicrous”: “Could make a real difference”

June 30, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Meghan Markle's potential future in politics is not a "ludicrous" prospect according to a British morning show host who says the royal "could make a real difference." Host Lorraine Kelly discussed Meghan's suitability for office after the publication of a Vogue article in which the duchess had a frank discussion about the Supreme Court 's overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision with prominent feminist Gloria Steinem. In the article, which was published on Wednesday, Meghan made some of her strongest political commentary to date, backing the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) and responding to Steinem's point that pressure needed to be applied to the White House and Congress to get this done with the comment: "Well, Gloria, maybe it seems as though you and I will be taking a trip to [Washington] D.C. together soon." Discussing the article with Daily Mirror royal editor, Russel Myers, Kelly said that this was an area where Meghan "really comes into her … [Read more...] about Meghan’s entering politics not “ludicrous”: “Could make a real difference”

Men who allegedly blew up rail lines to slow Russia face death in Belarus

June 30, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Three men who are alleged to have attempted to slow down the Russian military advance through Belarus at the beginning of Vladimir Putin 's invasion of Ukraine are set to face the death penalty for high treason. The three men, who have become known as the "rail partisans", have not been named but are said to be aged 29, 33, and 51. They have been labeled "terrorists" and "traitors" by Belarusian prosecutors. They stand accused by the Belarusian regime—often referred to as the last dictatorship in Europe—of high treason for having allegedly damaged a railway line in a bid to stop supplies of Russian weaponry and equipment from transiting through Belarus to Ukraine. They currently face treason and terrorism charges from the regime of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has been in power since 1994 and is a close ally of Vladimir Putin, even allowing Russia to use Belarus as a staging area for some of the Russian forces at the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine, when … [Read more...] about Men who allegedly blew up rail lines to slow Russia face death in Belarus

How to maintain clothing over time from downtown abbey vintage supplier

June 30, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

While many of us are looking to be more sustainable when it comes to our wardrobe, it can be easy to fall into the "fast fashion" trap of buying cheap clothes only for them to fall apart in a matter of months. One way of avoiding this is buying second hand or investing in pieces from truly eco-friendly brands, which can often be considerably more expensive than high-street pieces. So, how can consumers who are hesitant about investing in pieces ensure their clothing stands the test of time? Anita Lo, 28, from Cheshire, England, is the founder of Clara's Box—an online vintage store specializing in clothing from the 1800s to the 1990s and antique objects. Her global customer base includes various high-profile clients including the Downton Abbey costume design team and American fashion designer Connor Ives. The store, founded in December 2020, currently sells a number of antique bodices from the 1800s and Anita sources, washes, mends, photographs, sells and packs all items … [Read more...] about How to maintain clothing over time from downtown abbey vintage supplier

Golden retriever beauty regime goes viral: “Better nightly routine than me”

June 30, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A golden retriever is the envy of social media after their owner shared a video chronicling the dog's nighttime beauty routine. There's no denying the position of pets in the familial hierarchy has changed significantly in recent times. Dogs , for example, were once considered man's best friend but now assume the position of family member to many owners. A poll of U.S. pet owners by market research firm Harris Interactive highlighted the societal shift, with 91 percent of those quizzed saying they considered their pet to be a member of the family. That proportion actually rose slightly to 92 percent among dog owners. Further proof of our canine companions' newly exalted status recently arrived on social media in the shape of a video shared to TikTok by puppyy520 which showcased one golden retriever's impressively elaborate nighttime routine. A beauty regime to rival most human ones, the clip sees the dog enjoying something approaching a facial. It begins with the pet … [Read more...] about Golden retriever beauty regime goes viral: “Better nightly routine than me”

Lindsey Graham Threatens Aid Cut to Palestine Over ICC Move

January 19, 2015 by www.newsweek.com

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - The Palestinians could lose annual U.S. aid if they file a lawsuit against Israel at the International Criminal Court which they joined this month over American and Israeli protests, a senior U.S. Republican senator said on Monday. Lindsey Graham, part of a seven-member delegation of senators visiting Israel, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, said existing U.S. legislation "would cut off aid to the Palestinians if they filed a complaint" against Israel. At a news conference in Jerusalem, Graham called the Palestinian step "a bastardising of the role of the ICC. I find it incredibly offensive." "We will push back strongly to register our displeasure. It is already part of our law that would require us to stop funding if they actually bring a case," said Graham, of South Carolina. U.S. President Barack Obama's Democratic administration has said it does not believe Palestine is a sovereign state and therefore does not qualify to be part of the ICC, but has not … [Read more...] about Lindsey Graham Threatens Aid Cut to Palestine Over ICC Move
