Impossible Foods Will Make Its Grocery Store Debut in California

· September 20, 2019 ·

Beyond Meat’s rival Impossible Foods will make its long-awaited grocery store debut Friday, in California.  Customers looking to cook their own Impossible Burgers can buy a 12-ounce package of the plant-based meat at Gelson’s, an upscale grocery store chain with 27 locations across Southern California.  The Redwood City, California-based start-up joins other companies, including Tyson Foods and Nestle, that are looking to compete with Beyond in the grocery store aisles with their own realistic meat substitutes. Roughly half of Beyond’s revenue came from grocery store sales last quarter. Impossible’s meatless meats, like those of Beyond, will be stocked alongside meat from animals.  At $8.99 per package, the Impossible Burger will sell for about three times the average cost of ground beef, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics compiled in August across Western states. Impossible CFO David Lee said meat eaters are willing to pay … [Read more...] about Impossible Foods Will Make Its Grocery Store Debut in California

Sears Pins Future on Small Stores Selling Appliances, Mattresses

· May 23, 2019 ·

Like many suburban shopping areas, Overland Park, Kansas, has a Whole Foods grocery store and a Cheesecake Factory. Now, it's among the first to have a Sears Home & Life store. For five decades, from 1967 to 2017, Sears had presence in the booming town, which is also home to Sprint 's headquarters. But the Sears department store and auto center at 9701 Metcalf Ave. went dark two years ago, to make way for a glitzy mixed-use development. This is the narrative many people associate with Sears these days: store closings and liquidation sales. But a shiny, new Sears Home & Life store is the tale the company wants people talking about as it looks for a fresh start after narrowly escaping liquidation. Sears on Friday was opening its first such smaller-format stores — selling mainly mattresses, appliances and connected home products — in Overland Park and in Anchorage, Alaska, and in Lafayette, Louisiana. The company hopes these areas will draw new customers and nostalgic … [Read more...] about Sears Pins Future on Small Stores Selling Appliances, Mattresses

The 1/3: Childhood Obesity in the Twenty First Century

· December 5, 2012 ·

In the midst of the great depression, when American moral was at its lowest, Shirley Temple lit up the big screens.[1] The 1930s were filled with her precious face and catching voice. Shirley Temple was America’s child and demonstrated the sprit that American’s wanted to possess.[2] As she graced film-to-film and caused smile after smile, childhood obesity was one of the last things on the minds of her fellow Americans. Because of the Great Depression and the fear of a lack of food on the table, her vitality and health likely inspired viewers, rather than concerned them.Despite Shirley’s following, the first childhood obesity clinic was founded in America at Columbia University in 1930s.[3] Hilde Bruch was a German physician who was shocked by the size and weight of children in America, when she arrived in 1934.[4] Her obesity clinic was innovative and beyond the times.[5] Today, however, America is faced with such a problem with childhood obesity that Bruch now seems … [Read more...] about The 1/3: Childhood Obesity in the Twenty First Century

Mac v. PC

· February 29, 2008 ·

The decades-long Mac versus PC battle recalls those video games in which the Big Boss Bad Guy just can’t seem to squash our nimble little hero.Clever marketing and product development vie against massive market share. And with each round, the question grows: Is there a reason to switch to Apple, and is now the time? This year the ABA Journal is letting some real advocates argue the case. Ben Stevens and Rick Georges are not only lawyers using opposing systems; they are proponents who advise on the use of technology in the law office. They have strong opinions, and they’re not afraid to state them. No games, no rules and no punches pulled.MAC: (BEN STEVENS) OPENING SHOTSThere are any number of reasons for switching from a PC to a Mac. I know because I did it. And since 2005, I have been running a Mac-environment law office.Since I have actually used both PCs and Macs in my family law practice, I believe that I am uniquely qualified to address the differences in the … [Read more...] about Mac v. Healthy Trader Joe’s products nutritionists swear by

· April 21, 2018 ·

Get the Better newsletter. SUBSCRIBE As a dietitian, it’s my job to make eating well easy and accessible for people. And as a busy working parent, I need fast, nutritious solutions myself! The beloved grocery store Trader Joe’s does this so well, so I decided reach out to nutrition pros across the country who shared with NBC News BETTER their favorite Trader Joe’s shopping secrets. Take a peek into our kitchens and prepare yourself for quick and healthy eating ideas. Organic Riced Cauliflower (frozen) I’ve never been much of a “sneak veggies into meals” type of mom, but lately I’ve been pulling the wool over my 14 year-old son’s eyes with this frozen gem. Truthfully, he does well on the veggie front, but he draws the line on shredded carrots in his turkey tacos. (The peas didn’t go over so well, either.) But the riced cauliflower blends right in to tacos, brown rice dishes, and more. And because it’s frozen, it’s … [Read more...] about Healthy Trader Joe’s products nutritionists swear by
