A heartbroken husband has paid tribute to a PCSO who “couldn’t do enough” for others as a “strange, highly sexualised” loner was found guilty of her brutal murder. Speaking outside court, widowed Paul James fought back tears as he spoke of his “amazing” wife Julia who was ambushed in the woods while walking her dog in April 2021. Jurors took just over an hour to convict Callum Wheeler, 22, of bludgeoning the 53-year-old grandmother to death with a 3kg railway jack handle. Mr James described his wife, who worked supporting victims of domestic abuse, as the “funniest person I have ever met”, adding: "She just helped everybody, she just couldn't do enough." How African students in Ukraine are leading their own rescue efforts
Tolulope Osho, 31, reached the Polish border the day after Russia invaded Ukraine. He was close to safety from the war-torn land. But he decided to turn around. “I have friends,” he said of his fellow Africans in Ukraine. “If by leaving my valuables, I can save more lives, then I’m doing it. Life is more important.” Osho, who's from Nigeria, returned to Ternopil, in western Ukraine, where he’s remained in a safe zone for the past week. He's helped shelter people in underground bunkers, driven them to borders and provided money through a fundraiser. In all, he said he and a friend have aided some 200 people. ‘As long as you are Black, no one likes you’: Students allege racism during escape from Ukraine March 2, 2022 01:44 He said he’s relied heavily on Instagram, where people across the country have reached out to ask for money and transportation. “I navigate people who don’t know how to get out of the war zone,” he told NBC News, … [Read more...] about How African students in Ukraine are leading their own rescue efforts
Amber Heard Compared to Dr. Evil in Latest Viral Wardrobe Moment
After a weeklong pause in the trial between Johnny Depp and his ex-wife Amber Heard in Fairfax County, Virginia, Heard took the stand this week for her cross-examination and was mocked by many people online for her clothing because they felt it resembled Dr. Evil. Heard is appearing in court after Depp sued her for defamation asking for $50 million for loss of earnings, which he argued is a result of a Washington Post op-ed Heard wrote in 2018 stating she was the survivor of domestic abuse. Heard has countersued Depp for $100 million. One psychologist claimed the way Heard has been treated online during the trial has been viewed with "utter horror" by many women. And now, Heard's choice of outfit for Monday is being mocked online. Thousands of people tweeted or liked and commented on tweets making the unfavorable comparison between Heard's choice of outfit to the Austin Powers movie villain played by Mike Myers. YouTube user Jason Chow even went as far as to … [Read more...] about Amber Heard Compared to Dr. Evil in Latest Viral Wardrobe Moment
Amid a Worsening Formula Shortage, Mothers Are Asked: ‘Why Not Breastfeed?’
Before having her third child last month, Joelyz Lugo had planned to breastfeed, but her daughter’s difficult birth derailed such plans. While in the neonatal intensive care unit, her baby needed to be fed formula, and when the pair finally tried breastfeeding, the baby struggled to latch. One month later, with a baby formula shortage making it all but impossible for Ms. Lugo to give up breastfeeding, she has settled into a grueling routine. Every three hours, she hooks herself up to a breast pump to try and boost production, but her milk supply remains low. Ms. Lugo gets less than an ounce of breast milk per pumping session — a fraction of what her daughter needs. Between breastfeeding and pumping and searching stores around her home in New Britain, Conn., in search of formula, she spends hours every day simply trying to ensure her baby has enough to eat. “I have been crying about it because I’m trying my best, and nothing is working,” said Ms. Lugo, 31, who in two weeks is … [Read more...] about Amid a Worsening Formula Shortage, Mothers Are Asked: ‘Why Not Breastfeed?’
Lay off the Bank of England – Tory attacks on this institution should worry us all
It shouldn’t be all that surprising that the Tory government – at cabinet level according to the reports – is taking shots at the Bank of England . Casting about for other people to blame is one of the defining characteristics of Boris Johnson ’s dismal administration. “Always remember that it was the other guy’s fault,” in lurid pink letters is probably framed above the desk of every serving minister. I’m not sure about the font. Comic sans? It’s taken them a while to fully turn their guns on Threadneedle Street, even though control of inflation is the job of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and inflation is jumping up like a superpowered grasshopper with a predator in hot pursuit. The MPC’s problem is that there is precious little it can do about the chief drivers of the current surge. About 80 per cent of the power in the grasshopper’s legs is down to energy and tradeable goods, which the Bank has about as much power to influence as it does tomorrow’s … [Read more...] about Lay off the Bank of England – Tory attacks on this institution should worry us all

Think NIL blew up college sports? California is going for the knockout with new bill
Three years after California took the lead in the battle for college athlete rights as the first state to legalize name, image and likeness payments to players, another potentially game-changing bill is on the move through the state legislature in Sacramento. Senate Bill 206, signed into law by Gov. Gavin Newsom in the fall of 2019, made it illegal for the NCAA universities to prohibit third parties from paying college athletes for use of their NILs in endorsements, sponsorships and other appearances. But it did not ask school athletic departments to alter their budgets, which allowed for an easy passageway. In contrast, Senate Bill 1401, named the “College Athlete Race and Gender Equity Act,” cuts right to the heart of the collegiate model and the ideals of amateurism. SB 1401 would require California schools to share 50% of annual revenues in football and men’s and women’s basketball with the athletes, initiating a new era of “pay for play” — and what college sports leaders fear … [Read more...] about Think NIL blew up college sports? Endorsement: Kate Pynoos for Los Angeles City Council District 13
Los Angeles City Council Member Mitch O’Farrell has served two terms representing District 13, which includes Hollywood, Windsor Square, Echo Park, Silver Lake, Historic Filipinotown and Glassell Park — and we think that’s enough. The district needs new leadership and new energy to help solve the communities’ most pressing problems. The district’s challenges are significant — a large homeless population, a lack of affordable housing, gentrification that terrifies residents, who have watched rents and home prices soar and beloved small businesses struggle to survive. O’Farrell has done an acceptable job during his nine years on the City Council. But voters shouldn’t have to settle for just acceptable. The city needs leaders with a sense of urgency, a clear mission and a creative approach to homelessness that doesn’t involve moving people from one sidewalk to another. Two energetic challengers — Kate Pynoos and Hugo Soto-Martinez — could bring a fresh perspective that the district … [Read more...] about Endorsement: Kate Pynoos for Los Angeles City Council District 13
