Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak’s tax cut pledges are looking more and more implausible, one of the country's leading economic groups warns today. The Tory pair have not explained how they will fund “permanent” tax cuts while inflation rockets to 10.1% in July, the highly-respected Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) said. The IFS did suggest short-term Government borrowing to support struggling households may be necessary. But it predicted "permanent tax cuts" could put even more strain on public services already grappling with rising costs. IFS deputy director Carl Emmerson said: "The reality is that the UK has got poorer over the last year. “That makes tax and spending decisions all the more difficult. "It is hard to square the promises that both Ms Truss and Mr Sunak are making to cut taxes over the medium term with the absence of any specific measures to cut public spending and a presumed desire to manage the nation's finances responsibly." The IFS added: "Only last month … [Read more...] about Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak tax cuts are looking more implausible by the day, experts warn

New HIMARS missiles could give Ukraine forces major boost
German weapons manufacturer MBDA is developing a missile that could help Kyiv's forces in the fight against Russia, according to reports in Ukraine. The Ukrainian military has been using U.S and German-supplied HIMARS (high mobility artillery rocket systems) to repel Russian forces and to go on the offensive. The joint fire support missile (JFS-M) being developed by MBDA could increase the range of weapons fired by Ukraine from 300km (186 miles) to 500km, according to news site Obozrevatel. Two key bridges into the Russian-occupied city of Kherson , which Kyiv has been working to retake, were heavily damaged by strikes last week, the British Ministry of Defence said. Ukrainian authorities reported on Saturday that the last working bridge over the river in the country's southern region had been damaged, further crippling Russian supply lines, according to the Associated Press. The JFS-M has a high subsonic speed that ranges from 600km/h to 1000km/h, according to MBDA. Two of … [Read more...] about New HIMARS missiles could give Ukraine forces major boost

What Weisselberg’s guilty plea means for Trumps
The Trump Organization's former chief financial officer plead guilty Thursday to 15 felonies on Thursday and admitted he conspired with the company to avoid taxes on corporate benefits. Allen Weisselberg reached a plea deal with the Manhattan district attorney's office that will likely have major implications for the Trump Organization. Weisselberg is expected to be sentenced to five months in prison with potential time off for good behavior, which means he could end up serving around 100 days. However, Weisselberg's plea deal does not include cooperation in a wider probe into former President Donald Trump and he will not implicate Trump by pleading guilty. Weisselberg will be required to testify at a trial concerning charges against the Trump Organization due to begin in October if prosecutors call on him to do so. His testimony could prove a major factor in the outcome of that trial. Trump has not been charged with any crime arising from the investigation and … [Read more...] about What Weisselberg’s guilty plea means for Trumps
Japan launches campaign for young people to drink more to boost economy
Japan's national tax agency has reportedly launched a national competition in hopes to make alcoholic drinks more attractive to the younger generation, boosting the economy in turn. The "Sake Viva" campaign asks 20-39 year-olds to share their business ideas to increase demand for alcoholic drinks including Japanese sake, shochu, whiskey, beer or wine. This contest was devised after a realization that Generation Z (people born between 1997 and the early 2010s) is drinking less alcohol which has hit taxes for adult beverages. Recent trends have indicated that Generation Z drinks less than millennials, a trend that has resulted in lower alcohol sales and therefore less income for the government through taxes. Contestants are asked to come up with promotions, branding and even cutting-edge plans involving artificial intelligence. The group running the competition for the tax authority says new habits have formed during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has contributed to the … [Read more...] about Japan launches campaign for young people to drink more to boost economy
Data opportunity at the G20
The global politics of data is rapidly evolving as leading and emerging digital economies like the European Union (EU), the U.S., India, Indonesia, and South Africa strive to protect, monetise, and leverage data collected within their territories for domestic purposes. The age of borderless data with limited or no government control, once an aspiration, appears behind us. Increasing privacy and security concerns coupled with economic interests have compelled governments to institute rules and standards that govern and restrict cross-border flows with natural implications for negotiations on global trade and commerce. Indeed, the sheer amount of data being generated and shared globally has necessitated governments to exert more control over the use, sharing, and cross-border flow of data. According to the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF), data localisation laws have more than doubled from 2017 to 2021, indicating that states seek and want increasing levels of … [Read more...] about Data opportunity at the G20

Millions Of Users Have Faced Security Threats Because Of Browser Extensions in 2022: What It Means
Cyber-security researchers said on Thursday that more than 1.3 million users were affected by threats hiding in browser extensions in the first half of 2022. The figure is over 70 per cent of the number of users affected by the same threat throughout 2021. Kaspersky researchers analysed what risks innocent-looking browser extensions pose to users and the activities of cybercriminals hiding threats under add-ons. Mimicking popular apps such as Google Translator or extensions with useful functionality like PDF Converter or Video Downloader, threats in browser extensions can insert advertisements, collect data about users’ browsing histories and even search for login credentials. “Even browser extensions that do not carry a malicious payload can be dangerous. For example, when the developers of these add-ons sell gathered user data to other companies, potentially exposing their data to someone who was not supposed to see it,” said Anton Ivanov, senior security researcher.
