Biden Needs to Fix His COVID Screwups if He Wants to Win Re-Election in 2024
COVID-19 could end up taking down two presidents—the one who was grossly incompetent , and the one who expected to ride a vaccine to victory over the coronavirus. In other words, Donald Trump might very well have been re-elected if he had handled COVID responsibly. And while Joe Biden’s been an improvement, the perception of his management of the pandemic isn’t great, and that could be his undoing. A New York Times analysis of Biden’s decline in the polls from the mid-50s to his current 42 percent reveals that the downward pressure started well before the messy August 2021 exit from Afghanistan took its toll . The slippage in Biden’s numbers, in fact, coincided with the rise of the more transmissible Delta variant and with it, a growing awareness among the public that the administration’s cheery declaration of a post-vaccine “summer of freedom” had turned into something quite different. Biden’s Independence Day celebration was “the domestic equivalent of Mission … [Read more...] about Biden Needs to Fix His COVID Screwups if He Wants to Win Re-Election in 2024
The Election Denier Who Could Run Michigan’s Elections
In the weeks after the 2020 election, one particular Michigan woman was trumpeting claims of fraud as loudly as she could. Kristina Karamo, a community-college professor who’d previously accused Democrats of having a “Satanic agenda,” went on Fox News again and again to describe how illegal ballots supposedly had been tallied for Joe Biden at the TCF Center in Detroit, where she worked as a poll watcher. She testified before the State Senate that sacks of votes inexplicably had been dropped off there in the middle of Election Night. She suggested that Dominion Voting software had flipped Trump votes to Biden votes statewide. None of what Karamo described actually happened—as far as anyone has been able to confirm . Her story served its purpose, though: Karamo has spent the past year campaigning to be Michigan’s next secretary of state. Some people might have dismissed her, at first, as just another down-ballot conspiracy kook with no chance of winning her party’s primary. But … [Read more...] about The Election Denier Who Could Run Michigan’s Elections
Air pocket
D uring the height of the pandemic, after getting fully vaccinated, I had to do a few cross-border flights. They were not fun at all, but confusing and exasperating. Check-ins, security checks, body scans, customs and immigration clearances, uploading vaccine certificates, and downloading apps for departure and arrival are time-consuming and, in many instances, complicated even for the tech-savvy. I remember my first transoceanic flight on an Air India Jumbo Jet, Emperor Ashoka, from the Santa Cruz airport in Bombay to the JFK airport in New York City. The aircraft had a Mughal décor and it felt like a flying palace. The exquisite sari-clad cabin crew, the smell of the newly furbished interiors and the ambience, the roar of the jets, and the food and drinks, all had mesmerising appeal. That was the heyday of air travel. Stylish, vibrant advertisements depicting beautiful sceneries and young people extolled the virtues of flying. I reminisce one of the airlines’ commercial … [Read more...] about Air pocket
Faced with judicial orders against opaque Look Out Circulars, govt moves SC to preserve its secrecy
Wary of embarrassment he might face if stopped at the airport by the immigration, a politician from Jammu and Kashmir has written to the authorities seeking to know if his name is there in the ‘no-fly’ list that bars him from travelling abroad. Pining over his ailing sister in the United Kingdom, the politician, who does not want to be identified, wanted to check all safety boxes before he takes the journey to Delhi to board an international flight. “I do not want to be made into a spectacle at the Delhi airport, where the immigration authorities stop me and take me aside for questioning. It will be an embarrassment for the family,” he stated. In April, Aakar Patel, chair of human rights organisation Amnesty International India, was stopped at the Bengaluru airport on the basis of an Look Out Circular (LOC) generated by the CBI. He said, “You don’t realise there is an LOC against you until forced away from the airport.” The opaque system under which LOCs are issued is such that … [Read more...] about Faced with judicial orders against opaque Look Out Circulars, govt moves SC to preserve its secrecy

Impairment charges drag Dr. Reddy’s Q4 net 83%
Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories reported a close to 83% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit to ₹97 crore for the quarter ended March. Revenue from operations increased almost 15% to ₹5,474.9 crore. Denting the bottomline were the ₹741-crore impairment charges the generic drugmaker recorded on account of significant changes to market conditions for certain products, especially a decrease in market potential and increased competition leading to lower volumes, according to the results prepared under the Indian Accounting Standards. The company also made provisions towards an old litigation with the State of Texas, U.S. of ₹98 crore. For the fiscal, net profit climbed to ₹2,182.5 crore (₹1,951.6 crore) that came on an 11.6% increase in revenue from operations to ₹21,545.2 crore. “We delivered healthy growth in revenue, though the profits were impacted by impairment charges,” co-chairman and MD G.V. IPL 2022 | Kohli regains his touch, powers Royal Challengers to a comfortable win against Gujarat Titans
Virat Kohli (73, 54b, 8x4, 2x6) returned to form to give Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) an eight-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans (GT) in its last group stage IPL match here on Thursday, May 19, 2022. The win kept RCB (16 points) in the hunt for a playoffs spot. If Delhi Capitals (14 points) loses to Mumbai Indians on Sunday, RCB will make the cut. Kohli, who has struggled for form this season, anchored the successful chase of 169. He was lucky early in his essay, when Rashid Khan put down a chance at deep square-leg. Rashid rushed in too early and could not get under the high ball. Kohli cashed in to record his highest score of the edition. Faf du Plessis (44, 38b, 5x4) and Kohli set RCB on the path to victory with a 115-run opening stand. Kohli reached his fifty with a six, leading the big crowd at the Wankhede Stadium to chant his name. Rashid, who engaged in a verbal banter with Kohli when he came on to bowl, eventually got his man stumped. At this stage, RCB needed a … [Read more...] about IPL 2022 | Kohli regains his touch, powers Royal Challengers to a comfortable win against Gujarat Titans
