The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed the plea by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited of Adani challenging disqualification of its bid for upgrade of the container terminal in Navi Mumbai by the Board of Trustees of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M.S. Karnik rejected the plea as non-meritorious and directed the companies to pay ₹5 lakh to JNPA. Since Adani Ports has already submitted Rs 4.25 lakh with the tender to JNPA, it will deposit the remaining ₹75, 000. The Bench also refused Adani Ports’s request to maintain status quo and not open bids till it sought relief before the Supreme Court. As per the plea the said bidding process consisted of two stages, the first stage was a global invitation of ‘Request for Qualification’ (RFQ) seeking application from interested parties. The second stage was where the applicants had to send their ‘Request for Proposal.’ Adani ports had contended that after … [Read more...] about Bombay HC dismisses Adani Ports plea challenging disqualification by JNPA

At the China border It is worrisome that China is upgrading its defence equipment on its border with India (Page 1, “China upgraded firepower on LAC”, June 27). That these developments in terms of a military infrastructure build-up have been going on ever since the stand-off between India and China confirms the point that China has been planning meticulously in terms of a permanency. One wonders where the talks that have been held so far on disengagement and de-escalation are heading if China is working to a plan. Though India has expanded its military capabilities and augmented its border defence infrastructure, it should be alert to face any eventualities. D. Sethuraman, Chennai If the report is true, it reveals the true intentions of Beijing. And if the shared interests of India and China are dominant in other spheres, it is not clear why no major headway has been made to de-escalate the situation on the border. Keeping the border issue alive will only lead to unintended … [Read more...] about Letters to the Editor — June 28, 2022

Lashkar-e-Taiba deputy chief and 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks planner Sajid Mir was sentenced by a Pakistan anti-terrorism court in Lahore on terror-financing charges in May this year, in a speedy trial completed just three weeks after he was arrested, three days before a U.S.-Pakistan ministerial meeting and a month before the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) plenary that gave Pakistan a reprieve. Mir had been declared “dead” by Pakistani officials as recently as in December 2021, but was then arrested by the police on April 21, 2022, convicted on May 16, 2022, and sent to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail to serve three consecutive sentences amounting to fifteen and a half years in prison. According to a report in Pakistan Geo News , officials said Mir was tried and convicted “quietly”, given the sensitivities around the case. On the evidence heard in the hearing Mr Arrow informed the court that a review of staffing levels should be undertaken by the hospital's hierarchy. Tale of Two Cities and Symbols: 1,400km Apart, Sena & AIADMK in Same Leaky Boat to Reach EC
It almost like the Shiv Sena and AIADMK are facing a midlife crisis. Both regional parties have crossed 50 years of existence and are facing vertical splits with rival factions fighting for the name, both literally and symbolically. Eknath Shinde , the Shiv Sena rebel who led the Maharashtra coup against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, is preparing to claim the party’s ‘bow and arrow’ election symbol. The Shinde camp calls itself true Shiv Sainiks and followers of Balasaheb Thackeray’s Hindutva. Top on the agenda of the breakaway Shinde faction is to ensure that they have the numbers on their side in the Assembly and that they do not attract the anti-defection law. Next comes the question of who is the real Shiv Sena. Mumbai-based political analyst Sanjay Jog says there are two major points to consider. First, the majority in the state legislature has been questioned. Second, how the Election Commission has ruled so far on disputes involving the poll symbol. “The fight … [Read more...] about Tale of Two Cities and Symbols: 1,400km Apart, Sena & AIADMK in Same Leaky Boat to Reach EC
Take it from a software engineer: Big Tech’s monopoly is stifling innovation | Opinion
There's a critical debate in Washington happening right now that will shape the future of technological innovation for decades to come. In response to an internet that has grown increasingly calcified, with only a handful of large players dominating commercial activity, Congress has actually stepped up to the plate: The Senate and House are poised to pass bipartisan legislation that would create a more level playing field for startups and entrepreneurs to compete. The bill, S2992 or the American Innovation and Choice Online Act, was introduced by Senators Klobuchar and Grassley to end platform overreach by the world's largest tech companies like Facebook and Google . And we in the community of independent developers are closely watching its progress. The bill would address an obvious problem: A few dominant tech companies have become gatekeepers of the internet, boosting their own products and undermining smaller competitors. Consider the story of one of the most … [Read more...] about Take it from a software engineer: Big Tech’s monopoly is stifling innovation | Opinion
Roe Was Flawed. Dobbs Is Worse.
This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here . I’m a conservative (or what used to be called a conservative) who always thought Roe v. Wade was the product of judicial activism. But overturning it is even worse. But first, here’s more from The Atlantic . America is sliding into the long pandemic defeat, Ed Yong writes. We’re about to see just how pro-life Republicans actually are. The Constitution is whatever the right wing says it is, Adam Serwer argues. As of last Friday, American women lost the constitutional right to choose an abortion, ending a protection that’s nearly 50 years old. Like most Americans, I think abortion must remain legal—but with restrictions. I am conflicted about abortion because of things that happened in my own family , but when it comes to the law, let’s stipulate that … [Read more...] about Roe Was Flawed. Dobbs Is Worse.
Election 2022: Abortion central in first post-Roe primaries
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 DENVER (AP) — The midterm primary season enters a new, more volatile phase on Tuesday as voters participate in the first elections since the U.S. Supreme Court's decision revoking a woman's constitutional right to an abortion jolted the nation's politics. In Colorado's Republican U.S. Senate primary, voters are choosing between businessman Joe O'Dea and state Rep. Ron Hanks. O'Dea is the rare Republican who supports most abortion rights while Hanks backs a ban on the procedure in all cases. Meanwhile, in the Republican race for governor in Illinois, Darren Bailey, a farmer endorsed by former President Donald Trump over the weekend, wants to end the state’s right to abortion except for instances in which the mother's life is in danger. He doesn't support exceptions for rape or incest. His opponent, Richard Irvin, the first Black mayor of Aurora, has said he would allow abortions in … [Read more...] about Election 2022: Abortion central in first post-Roe primaries
