New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe

July 2, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

New York shut down Olivet University's operations in the state, saying the Evangelical Christian college was still largely run by a group of David Jang disciples linked to a 2018 criminal conspiracy. Jang, a Korean American cleric, founded Olivet in 2000. His followers are now in the crosshairs of Department of Homeland Security investigators probing whether the university was part of a scheme to launder money for criminals in China and the United States. The stinging rebuke by New York's Deputy Commissioner of Education cited "a pattern of mismanagement" at the university and its ties to "criminal activity" in ending Olivet's authorization to operate credit-bearing courses or programs in New York. (Olivet's campuses in Tennessee and California are likely to also come under scrutiny, and DHS may revoke Olivet's authorization to enroll international students.) The education department's decision to close the Olivet campuses in Manhattan and Dover, New York, after a two-year … [Read more...] about New York shuts down Olivet University amid federal money-laundering probe

Newsmax Host Includes Ben Shapiro Among ‘Black Conservatives’

April 20, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Newsmax host Greg Kelly included Daily Wire founder Ben Shapiro—who is very much not Black—among a list of Black conservatives on Tuesday night, going so far as to describe Shapiro as “one of the heroes” of the Black conservative movement. Kelly, who recently claimed there hasn’t been a “substantial” white supremacist demonstration in a century, once again took issue with mainstream media figures and politicians discussing the continuing impact of systemic racism in America. According to the cartoonishly MAGA Newsmax star, the fact that anti-racism activists have jobs and families proves that racism doesn’t exist. “So we looked it up—all those people who just went on about systemic white racism and white supremacy, they all graduated from high school,” he declared. “They all got married and they didn’t have children out of wedlock. If only they came on television and talked about those things, they’d actually be helping people.” The Greg Kelly Reports host then took aim at … [Read more...] about Newsmax Host Includes Ben Shapiro Among ‘Black Conservatives’

Anthony Joshua needs to understand who he really is to knock down Oleksandr Usyk

June 24, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

August 20 in Jeddah is judgment day for Anthony Joshua . A second loss to Oleksandr Usyk would be game over for him. In a sense Joshua is still wrestling with the consequences of that defeat to Andy Ruiz three years ago. Though he avenged it six months later, he has not been the same fighter since. He needs to strip everything back to boxing and forget being a superstar and building legacies. That stuff takes care of itself. When Joshua pitched up in New York for the first Ruiz fight it was all about conquering America, establishing the AJ brand on the grandest stage. The correction came in the shape of a looping right hand. Since then he has tried to become something he is not, a technical, thinking fighter. This was the root of his problems against Usyk. Usyk is twice as technical as Joshua. He was outboxed and hurt in the first fight and looked ready to topple at the end. To succeed in the second he must impose himself from the first bell, hit Usyk with … [Read more...] about Anthony Joshua needs to understand who he really is to knock down Oleksandr Usyk

COVID, economy cited for dips in Nevada college enrollments

July 2, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Call it a form of long COVID, but more than two years after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, student enrollment at the College of Southern Nevada is down some 25% from the fall of 2019. Not only that, but the falloff seemingly has not bottomed out, with enrollment today down 5.5% compared with last fall, CSN officials said. “We’ve realized that the largest population of students that have made up this decline are underserved, under-resourced students,” James McCoy, the school’s vice president of academic affairs, told the Las Vegas Sun. “Higher education may not — as a result of the pandemic, as a result of the economy — become a priority” for some students, McCoy said. The College of Southern Nevada has the largest enrollment among Nevada universities, with almost 34,000 students in 2022. But it is seeing fewer students enrolling straight out of high school, which is why it is ramping up efforts to reach those students, according to officials. What … [Read more...] about COVID, economy cited for dips in Nevada college enrollments

6 months’ home confinement for ex-USC coach in college scam

June 29, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

A former University of Southern California soccer coach who took bribes in exchange for helping unqualified kids into the school was sentenced Wednesday to six months in home confinement after cooperating with authorities investigating the college admissions scandal. Prosecutors had not been seeking home confinement or prison time for Ali Khosroshahin, citing his quick acceptance of responsibility and his help in prosecuting others in the massive case. But U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston decided that prosecutors' recommendation of time served wasn't enough, noting that Khosroshahin dragged his assistant coach into the corrupt scheme, among other things. Khosroshahin, who was the head women's soccer coach from 2007 to 2013, appeared to fight back tears as he apologized to USC, his former athletes, his family and the deserving students who missed out on an admissions spot because of his “lies and greed.” “I want to thank the government for bringing this … [Read more...] about 6 months’ home confinement for ex-USC coach in college scam

Colorado’s drop in life expectancy blamed on COVID, drugs

July 2, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

DENVER (AP) — Life expectancy dropped in Colorado for the second straight year in 2021. It’s the kind of decline, driven by the pandemic, not seen in decades, data from the state health department show. The average life expectancy for Colorado residents fell to 78 years in 2021. That’s slightly lower than 2020, the first year of the pandemic when it was 78.4 years, but the slide represents a persistent and significant drop of nearly three years compared to 2019. “The last time life expectancy dropped like this was in 1943, which was the most fatal year of World War II, for the nation,” said Dr. Eric France, the state’s chief medical officer. “It is tragic that we see life expectancy drop. Death rates increased by 20 percent.” Key drivers for the decline were COVID-19 and overdose deaths. The data vary by demographic group. COVID-19 was the leading cause of death among Hispanics, as well as non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders and American Indian/Native … [Read more...] about Colorado’s drop in life expectancy blamed on COVID, drugs

Gleeful Texas AG Closes His Entire State Office to Bask in Death of Roe

June 24, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

Of all the eye-popping responses to the Supreme Court’s bombshell decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s was among the most extreme. The ultra-conservative Paxton said he’d be celebrating the removal of women’s rights by shutting down every attorney general’s office from noon and making June 24 an annual holiday for his staff. Dubbing it “Sanctity of Life” day, he called the holiday a “memorial” to “almost 70 million babies who have been killed in the womb.” Paxton did not, notably, do the same when an 18-year-old killed 19 children and two teachers last month at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Elsewhere, anti-abortion proponents popped champagne bottles in front of the Supreme Court and crowed on Fox News about it being a “wonderful day.” The conservative-majority Supreme Court ruled Friday that the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 was wrong and Americans do not have the constitutional right to an … [Read more...] about Gleeful Texas AG Closes His Entire State Office to Bask in Death of Roe
