WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury said on Friday he is to “walk away” from boxing, two days after insisting he would make a comeback to the sport to complete a trilogy against fellow-Briton Derek Chisora. Fury said in April, after beating Dillian Whyte at Wembley stadium, that he had promised his wife he would retire, before then declaring his interest in fighting Anthony Joshua in England provided the bout was free to watch and attend. The promise of completing two trilogies, one with Deontay Wilder and a second with Chisora, appeared to confirm Fury’s retirement plans had been shelved, only for the 34-year-old to make another u-turn. The outcome of a rematch between Joshua and Ukraine’s WBA, WBO, IBF and IBO champion Oleksandr Usyk in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia next week, may persuade Fury to think again. Fury and Joshua appeared to be on a collision course last year until an arbitrator ruled Fury had to fight Wilder for a third time. Reports: Ex-officer to plead guilty in Breonna Taylor case
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Former Louisville police Detective Kelly Goodlett intends to plead guilty to a civil rights charge stemming from the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, a Black woman whose death in a botched police drug raid helped spark racial justice protests in 2020. Goodlett is set to appear Aug. 22 before a federal judge to enter her plea, media outlets reported, citing her lawyer, Brandon Marshall. Marshall did not immediately return phone calls and emails seeking comment Friday. Goodlett will plead guilty to one count of conspiring to violate Taylor's civil rights for helping falsify an affidavit for the search of her apartment, the Courier Journal reported Friday. She faces a sentence of no more than five years in prison. Taylor was shot by officers who knocked down her apartment door while executing a search warrant. Taylor’s boyfriend fired a shot that hit one of the officers as they came through the door, and they returned fire, striking Taylor multiple times. … [Read more...] about Reports: Ex-officer to plead guilty in Breonna Taylor case

Trial Set for Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization’s Ex-Money Man
The Trump Organization and its former chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, are headed toward a criminal trial for tax fraud in October, as a New York state judge refused to dismiss the indictment on Friday morning. New York Justice Juan Merchan shot down nearly every request by Trump’s family company and his finance man to dismiss the case. Merchan was unconvinced that prosecutors mishandled the grand jury indictment—and he tossed aside the claim that the case was politically motivated. “This trial's gonna take a long time,” prosecutor Joshua Adam Steinglass said in court. The judge scheduled a hearing next month to determine if prosecutors can use potentially incriminating statements that Weisselberg told law enforcement when he was detained briefly last year. It’s been nearly a year since Weisselberg has appeared in court for this case. The last time, his defense lawyers revealed that prosecutors had discovered a ton of new evidence in some unnamed person’s … [Read more...] about Trial Set for Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization’s Ex-Money Man
The Absurd Argument Against Making Trump Obey the Law
This article has been updated to include new information about a man who attempted to breach an F.B.I. field office. It took many accidents, catastrophes, misjudgments and mistakes for Donald Trump to win the presidency in 2016. Two particularly important errors came from James Comey, then the head of the F.B.I., who was excessively worried about what Trump’s supporters would think of the resolution of the investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails. First, in July 2016, Comey broke protocol to give a news conference in which he criticized Clinton even while announcing that she’d committed no crime. He reportedly did this because he wanted to protect the reputation of the F.B.I. from inevitable right-wing claims that the investigation had been shut down for political reasons. Then, on Oct. 28, just days before the election, Comey broke protocol again, telling Congress that the Clinton investigation had been reopened because of emails found on the laptop of the former … [Read more...] about The Absurd Argument Against Making Trump Obey the Law
Ukraine girl who lost dad in war starts own business to donate to Army
Meet the 7-year-old Ukrainian girl who started her own business making flower crowns after her dad was killed by Russian troops. Irynka Vasilyeva has raised enough money to buy the Ukrainian army two vehicles and two thermal imaging goggles, and now she dreams of making enough to give them American-made Javelin missiles, planes and tanks. Her dad, Senior Lieutenant Oleksandr Vasilyev, of the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade, also known as the 14th Mechanized Brigade and named after Prince Roman the Great, died in combat in the Mykolaiv region, in southern Ukraine, on Sunday, March 27. Zenger News spoke to Irynka's mom Viktoria, 32, in an exclusive interview and she said that it all started years before, in 2014, when hostilities flared up in the Donbas and annexed Crimea. Viktoria said: "Our lives were divided into before and after 2014. War. A terrible war. "My brother, a soldier, immediately went to the front to defend the Motherland." Ukraine War: Bucha Buries Unidentified Victims Killed During Russian Occupation
Eleven coffins draped in purple cloth line freshly dug graves in the last row of Bucha’s cemetery. Inside rest nine men and two women who were killed during Russia’s occupation of the Kyiv suburb in March. Almost all the dead had been hastily buried in mass graves by local residents as the fierce fighting left them with no other choice. One body was found later after the Russian withdrawal from the region. More than four months after AFP journalists discovered 20 civilian corpses in Bucha on April 2, the first evidence of war crimes in Ukraine, the local authorities have started burying the dead that no one has claimed. Fourteen bodies were interred on Tuesday, with another 11 following on Thursday. Mykhailyna Skoryk-Shkarivska, an assistant to Bucha’s mayor, told AFP another three ceremonies were planned. Of the 458 civilians who died during the occupation of the town, around 50 have not been identified, she said. DNA tests “We are going to continue to work… Our goal is … [Read more...] about Ukraine War: Bucha Buries Unidentified Victims Killed During Russian Occupation

‘I was so poor I stole sandwiches from Poundland and have cold baths to save money’
A desperate Brit says he was forced to steal sandwiches from Poundland due to the crippling cost of living crisis. Former delivery driver Steve Anthony, 42, said he had exhausted "every other avenue" before pinching the food. Mr Anthony stopped shoplifting after receiving help from a local community hub, although many other Brits are turning to crime to survive. Shops have reported a big rise in theft of essential low-value items from milk, cheese and cooking oil to baby milk and nappies. Mum-of-four Lisa Ann has also admitted that she too had stolen from a Co-op due to soaring energy and food prices. Both she and Steve also save money through various means, such as washing themselves in cold water and eating just once a day as a result of the cost of living crisis. Household energy bills increased by 54 per cent in April this year, and are likely to continue spiralling with analysts predicting that the October price cap could hit £3,359. Steve, from Sheffield, … [Read more...] about ‘I was so poor I stole sandwiches from Poundland and have cold baths to save money’
