Andhra Pradesh: TDP activists, police exchange heated arguments in Chittoor

June 24, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Tension prevailed as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) activists on June 24 staged a dharna in front of the II-Town police station in Chittoor, seeking action against a police officer for allegedly prompting his driver to hit former Mayor Katari Hemalatha with the office vehicle during a protest on June 23 midnight. Ms. Hemalatha, who sustained injuries on her leg, is undergoing treatment at the District Hospital. The demonstration saw the TDP activists and the police personnel exchanging heated arguments and jostling with each other. Additional forces were deployed to diffuse the tension. The protest on June 23 midnight came as a retort to the police search at the house of a TDP supporter on charges of storing ganja. Around 11 p.m. on June 23, a team led by II-Town police station Circle Inspector P. Yatheendra took a youth into custody, acting on a tip-off that he was making a deal with ganja smugglers. Later, the police reached Obanapalle locality to arrest another youth and … [Read more...] about Andhra Pradesh: TDP activists, police exchange heated arguments in Chittoor

Explained | Has the anti-defection law failed?

June 26, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The story so far: Maharashtra is in the throes of a constitutional crisis . Many ruling Shiv Sena legislators who seem to have revolted against the leadership of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray are now holed up in a hotel in distant Guwahati to keep out of the reach of party leaders. Their travel to Guwahati, via Surat, seems to have been facilitated by the BJP, the ruling party in Gujarat and Assam. All indications are that there is a planned mass defection underway so that an alternative regime that includes the BJP is formed in the State. Isn’t there a law against such defection? The Tenth Schedule of the Constitution , commonly known as the anti-defection law, was introduced in 1985 with a view to curb the tendency among legislators to switch loyalties from one party to another and facilitate the toppling of regimes and formation of new ones. It provides for the Presiding Officer of the legislature to disqualify any defector on a petition by another member. The law … [Read more...] about Explained | Has the anti-defection law failed?

Collector urged to probe ‘irregularities’ in NREGA works

June 24, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Dalit Bahujan Shramik Union which represents several scheduled castes and tribal organisations on Friday urged senior officials to probe the alleged ₹1 crore scam in clearing NREGA bills even before completion of works in several villages of Pusapti Rega mandal in the district. The union general secretary P. Chittibabu and other members urged Collector A. Suryakumari to order a probe since the Panchayatraj Department higher officials had already referred the issue to the district officials in May itself. “The NREGA scheme has been designed to provide livelihood to the downtrodden sections. The diversion of funds and their misuse had denied livelihood for them,” they said. “Many bills were cleared even before construction of Rythu Bharosa Kendras, panchayat buildings and wellness centres. Now incomplete structures are being shown to mislead the senior officials who are scheduled to come to inquire into the issue,” he added. Mr. Chittibabu and the fact-finding committee members … [Read more...] about Collector urged to probe ‘irregularities’ in NREGA works
