Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 2 NEW YORK (AP) — Despite a growing recognition of the problem, the United States continues to see newspapers die at the rate of two per week, according to a report issued Wednesday on the state of local news. Areas of the country that find themselves without a reliable source of local news tend to be poorer, older and less educated than those covered well, Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism, Media and Integrated Marketing Communications said. The country had 6,377 newspapers at the end of May, down from 8,891 in 2005, the report said. While the pandemic didn't quite cause the reckoning that some in the industry feared, 360 newspapers have shut down since the end of 2019, all but 24 of them weeklies serving small communities. An estimated 75,000 journalists worked in newspapers in 2006, and now that's down to 31,000, Northwestern said. Annual newspaper revenue slipped … [Read more...] about US newspapers continuing to die at rate of 2 each week

Carlson Warns ‘Making Joe Biden Mad’ Could Make You a Domestic Terrorist
Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson reacted to a spate of Department of Justice actions targeting tied directly to politics, which appear to be an effort to “criminalize” political opposition. Carlson noted a number of these actions, including protesting the 2020 presidential election or opposing Biden policies, could result in FBI agents showing up with search warrants. Partial transcript as follows: CARLSON: So in a functioning democratic system, this should be a problem for the people trying to do it. You can’t undermine the country you lead and expect to continue to lead it in a democracy and the Biden administration knows this, and that’s one of the reasons that the signature tactic of the Biden administration, this is our topic tonight, has been the criminalizing of American politics. Why have a political debate when you can just arrest people who disagree with you? And that has happened far below the media radar since the day Joe Biden was elected. And tonight, to … [Read more...] about Carlson Warns ‘Making Joe Biden Mad’ Could Make You a Domestic Terrorist
Is Biden a Man Out of Time?
The White House’s response to last week’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade , which in 1973 established a constitutional right to abortion, once again has exposed the tension between the conciliatory instincts President Joe Biden developed during his long career in Washington, D.C., and the ferocity of the modern combat between the two major political parties. An array of frustrated Democrats this week openly complained that Biden and other administration officials had failed, in their initial reactions to the ruling, to reflect the urgency and anguish of abortion-rights supporters. Although Biden quickly denounced the decision last week, he has avoided any broader condemnation of the Court’s direction or legitimacy and dismissed proposals for changing its structure. Biden’s aides have stressed the limits of what the executive branch can do to mitigate the impact of the ruling. Most notably, Biden initially refused to endorse rolling back the Senate filibuster in … [Read more...] about Is Biden a Man Out of Time?
CNN’s Amanpour: Taliban Won’t Respect the U.S. After Dobbs Decision
On Thursday, CNN International’s Christiane Amanpour warned that the U.S. Supreme Court overturning the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling last week would result in the Taliban no longer respecting the United States. Amanpour told “CNN Newsroom” that overturning Roe v. Wade was a “really serious” moment not only for American women but also “America’s ability to hold its head up as a democracy that respects the rights of every constituent.” “I would also say that as a conclusion, American democracy and the state of American women’s rights are being really looked at, not just by the rest of the West, as these meetings are happening, but by the rest of the world,” advised Amanpour. She continued, “You think the Taliban are going to actually say, ‘Oh, yeah, we’re going to adhere to what you tell us for recognition based on what, you know, on what we do about women?’ This is really serious, this moment, for American women and for America’s ability to hold its head up as a democracy that … [Read more...] about CNN’s Amanpour: Taliban Won’t Respect the U.S. After Dobbs Decision
NYT Slams Netflix’s ‘Cowardice’ for Pulling ‘Patriot Act’ Episode in Saudi Arabia
New York Times media columnist Jim Rutenberg eviscerated Netflix for blocking an episode of the Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj from streaming in Saudi Arabia following complaints about its portrayal of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. “Maybe the Saudi complaint wasn’t all that shocking. Like any authoritarian monarch worth his bone saw, Prince Mohammed doesn’t brook criticism,” Rutenberg wrote in his Sunday opinion-editorial. “The shock came with Netflix’s supine compliance. After pulling the episode from its Saudi feed, the streaming service told the Financial Times it was simply responding to ‘a valid legal request.’” Netflix is facing a firestorm of criticism for pulling the episode of comedian Hasan Minhaj’s Patriot Act series that criticized the kingdom’s powerful crown prince over the killing of Washington Post opinion writer Jamal Khashoggi and the Saudi-led coalition at war in Yemen. “It blows my mind that it took the killing of a Washington Post journalist … [Read more...] about NYT Slams Netflix’s ‘Cowardice’ for Pulling ‘Patriot Act’ Episode in Saudi Arabia
Pastor says wives must obey husbands, make pancakes if they demand
A California pastor has called upon women to make their husbands pancakes on demand. Pastor Jared Pozarnsky, of Hold Fast Baptist Church in Fresno, made the bizarre statement during a sermon about the content of the Acts of the Apostles, one of the books of the New Testament. In a video , uploaded on June 24, Pastor Pozarnsky then brought up a passage from the New Testament's Ephesians that outlines the Biblical perspective on relationships between family members. Passages in Ephesians say that wives should "submit" to their husbands as he is "the head of the wife." Husbands, however, are simply told to "love" their wives. He added: "It says the wives to be subjected to their husbands in everything. Everything. So, you know, that's not popular today but there's a lot of things that are left up to the husband. The pastor later added: "If I came home and my wife had a whole meal on the table and I said, I want pancakes. And she's like 'oh man, but I've already made … [Read more...] about Pastor says wives must obey husbands, make pancakes if they demand

Supreme Court climate ruling returned power to the people
close Video Kudlow on EPA case: 'This is a massive, massive decision' FOX Business anchor Larry Kudlow weighs in on the Supreme Court's decision pushing back against Biden on climate authority. NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! The Supreme Court’s ruling in West Virginia v. the Environmental Protection Agency, holding that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot remake the U.S. energy sector without authorization from Congress, returns power to the American people instead of a bloated bureaucracy in Washington, D.C. As an added benefit, it will also prevent radical increases in energy costs — a welcome relief given 40-year high inflation. The case arose from one of President Barack Obama’s attempts to bypass Congress. In his first term, Obama tried to get Congress to pass a cap-and-trade law to reduce carbon emissions. Obama candidly admitted that "under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would … [Read more...] about Supreme Court climate ruling returned power to the people
