Target customers will soon be able to consummate purchases as shoppers at other retail establishments have done for years — by holding up smartphones, smartwatches and “contactless” credit cards to a certain ubiquitous kind of wireless-payment terminal. Such a maneuver is increasingly commonplace in the U.S retail realm, largely spurred by Apple and the Apple Pay service it has built into its iPhones and Apple Watches. Essentially identical wireless-payment features are built into Android phones and watches from Google, Samsung and others. Target, however, had been one of the biggest retail holdouts as Apple Pay and comparable Google Pay and Samsung Pay services took hold in other shopping establishments such as Best Buy stores.
