I ndependent India will turn 75 on Sunday, under the helm of an Adivasi President and a Gujarati Prime Minister , who, in their addresses to the nation (as yet undelivered as I write these words), will give voice to the extraordinary civilisational ethos of our country that they themselves personify. It is a very special moment in the history of this ancient land, one we are all privileged to be living through. A rare privilege My mind turns this week, though, to another very special moment 75 years ago — the moment of India’s celebrated “freedom at midnight” . I am privileged to have seen a remarkable document, a letter written on August 27, 1947 by a young American woman, Mildred Talbot, who had the rare privilege of being present at the Independence ceremonies of both India and Pakistan. Mildred, the wife of the admirable journalist, diplomat and Indophile, Phillips Talbot, died in 2004 at the age of 89. But she had agreed that I could share with others her first-hand … [Read more...] about Independence, in the words of an American

Afghan Girls Face Uncertain Future After 1 Year of No School
For most teenage girls in Afghanistan, its been a year since they set foot in a classroom. With no sign the ruling Taliban will allow them back to school, some are trying to find ways to keep education from stalling for a generation of young women. At a house in Kabul, dozens gathered on a recent day for classes in an informal school set up by Sodaba Nazhand. She and her sister teach English, science and math to girls who should be in secondary school. When the Taliban wanted to take away the rights of education and the rights of work from women, I wanted to stand against their decision by teaching these girls, Nazhand told The Associated Press. Hers is one of a number of underground schools in operation since the Taliban took over the country a year ago and banned girls from continuing their education past the sixth grade. While the Taliban have permitted women to continue attending universities, this exception will become irrelevant when there are no more girls graduating from … [Read more...] about Afghan Girls Face Uncertain Future After 1 Year of No School

Son hopes parents never see charred wreckage of home destroyed in horror heatwave fire
A man whose parents' house was destroyed when a wildfire swept through Wennington hopes they never return to see the wreckage. At least nine homes were destroyed in the east London village after a compost fire burnt out of control during Tuesday's record temperatures. George Allen was among those to return to Wennington to see if anything could be salvaged from the home of his parents, George and Edith. But the property has been reduced to two-and-a-half walls and rubble, with a couple of burned-out cars alongside the charred wreckage. George and Edith were not in their home when the fire swept through the village and their son is convinced the pair, who are in their 80s, would have struggled to escape Two burned-out cars sit in front of the charred remains of the house ( Image: Sky News) Sky News reports the fire is thought to have started in the garden of the home that they bought over 50 years ago and quickly moved through the building, which was … [Read more...] about Son hopes parents never see charred wreckage of home destroyed in horror heatwave fire

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 HAVANA (AP) — Colombia's new government and members of the nation's last guerrilla group took steps Friday toward restarting peace talks that were suspended three years ago in Cuba. After a meeting between representatives of both sides in Havana, Colombia's national peace commissioner, Danilo Rueda, said the government would take the necessary “judicial and political steps” to make peace talks possible with the National Liberation Army, known as the ELN. Observers consider it likely that those steps will include lifting arrest warrants for ELN negotiators who are currently living in exile in Cuba. The administration of newly inaugurated President Gustavo Petro will engage with the ELN delegation and considers them to be legitimate representatives of the rebel group, Rueda said. “We believe that the ELN has the same desire for peace as the … [Read more...] about Colombia and ELN rebels begin moving to restart peace talks
The terrible legacy of Ayman al-Zawahiri | Opinion
On August 2, the United States announced it had killed Ayman al-Zawahiri via an airstrike in Kabul, Afghanistan. The kill was a major symbolic win. Zawahiri was the last remnant of the original leadership of al-Qaeda, serving as Osama bin Laden's right-hand man before assuming leadership of the organization himself. Other than perhaps bin Laden and Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, no figure did more to further the Sunni jihadist cause than Ayman al-Zawahiri. Americans should be celebrating his demise. They should also be planning ahead. Zawahiri's credentials as a jihadist operative speak for themselves. He dedicated more than 50 years of his life to overthrowing secularism and laying the groundwork for a global Islamic caliphate. When he was just 15, he helped establish Jama'at Jihad (Jihad Group), a small cell determined to overthrow the secular regime in Egypt in the 1970s. He was imprisoned for three years after Anwar Sadat's assassination and underwent torture at the hands of the … [Read more...] about The terrible legacy of Ayman al-Zawahiri | Opinion

Salman Rushdie on Ventilator and Could Lose Eye After Knife Attack
FAIRVIEW, New Jersey—British-Indian author Salman Rushdie is on a ventilator and unable to speak after a brutal on-stage stabbing attack at a western New York literary event, his agent said late Friday. “The news is not good,” Andrew Wylie wrote in an emailed update. “Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed; and his liver was stabbed and damaged.” The grim prognosis came shortly after a 24-year-old New Jersey man was arrested for the brazen attack. New York State Police have identified Hadi Mater of Fairview, New Jersey, as the suspected assailant in the attack that occurred as Rushdie was about to address the Chautauqua Institution , a nonprofit education center and summer resort near Buffalo, for a talk on the U.S. being an “asylum for writers and other artists in exile.” Rushdie, who was stabbed at least twice—once in the abdomen, once in the neck—was taken by helicopter to a hospital . Police said Matar had a pass to be on the grounds of … [Read more...] about Salman Rushdie on Ventilator and Could Lose Eye After Knife Attack

Boy finds enormous tooth of prehistoric megatooth shark in South Carolina
A young boy has found an enormous tooth from a prehistoric shark in South Carolina. The boy was taking part in a fossil hunting trip in Summerville hosted by Palmetto Fossil Excursions (PFE) when he stumbled across a 4.75-inch tooth from a prehistoric megatoothed shark known as Carcharocles angustidens , according to the company. "Congratulations kiddo! Truly the find of a lifetime!!!" the company said in a Facebook post on Thursday . PFE said finding any tooth from this ancient shark species larger than 4 inches is the equivalent of finding a 6.5-inch long tooth from a megalodon. Megalodon ( Carcharocles megalodon ) is an iconic shark species that is thought to have gone extinct around 3.6 million years ago. Its earliest remains date back more than 20 million years ago. Megalodon is considered to be one of the largest and most powerful predators to have ever lived. Some estimates suggest it could have grown to between roughly 50 feet and 60 feet in length, according … [Read more...] about Boy finds enormous tooth of prehistoric megatooth shark in South Carolina
