On Wednesday 29 June, the rapper R Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison , after being found guilty for sex trafficking and racketeering last year. Breon Peace, US attorney for the eastern district of New York, said Kelly showed a “callous disregard for the devastation his crimes had on his victims and has shown no remorse for his conduct”, despite facing seven of his victims in court and hearing of the impact his actions had on them. Some of them were just children when the abuse began. One victim, Jovante Cunningham – who first met Kelly at age 14 and worked as a backing dancer for him – said his abuse had spanned 30 years and “30 years is what he got”. “When you are taught to be quiet and to keep silent about things that should be spoken about openly, you find yourself reclused and that often affords people the ability to manipulate you,” she said outside Brooklyn Federal Court in New York. Another, identified only as Angela, called the singer a “Pied … [Read more...] about R Kelly’s prison sentence is the least men like him deserve

It’s raining anchovies in San Francisco
Anchovies have been falling from the sky onto the streets of San Francisco , with experts theorizing it may be due to an explosion in anchovy populations nearby. A Reddit user posted that "about 12 eight-inch silver fish just rained down from the sky onto [her] friend's house (roof and back deck)," near Sutro Park in Outer Richmond. Other commenters said that they had seen fish scattered around the city in unexplained places. One said that they: "saw smaller, about 5-6 inch long, skinny sardine-looking fish scattered in one part of the arboretum," while another said that they "almost got hit by a fish waiting for a bus in Castro." Also in Outer Richmond, one commenter said they "saw a bunch of fish on the sidewalk, then 1 block down, they started raining down & thumping on the sidewalk." According to local fishermen , the strange fishy rain is a result of seabirds that are gorging themselves on the anchovies in the bay, which have recently seen a massive … [Read more...] about It’s raining anchovies in San Francisco
Chappie Stars Discuss Robot Fights, Animated Butlers and Mullets
At a press conference for media who had just watched a screening of Neill Blomkamp's movie Chappie , some bizarre questions were traded on what would make an ideal robot, the art of creating the most stereotypical Australian character, and which comic book hero or robot would win in a fight. Why do themes like artificial intelligence keep resonating with humanity as we advance? Neill Blomkamp: My point of view on AI, which ties into the nature for humans constantly looking into the reasons for why we exist and why consciousness exists, changed during the making of Chappie . I'm not actually completely sure that humans are going to be capable of giving birth to AI in the way that films fictionalize it. You have weak artificial intelligence which is like a robot or computer system that follows a list of protocols that are yes, no answers that can be as complex as you want. And then you have strong AI, which is basically like a human, something that can think up a thought … [Read more...] about Chappie Stars Discuss Robot Fights, Animated Butlers and Mullets
The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Culture Art Relax. They didn't come from Mars or some distant, undiscovered galaxy. The 10 aliens (and their 24 tents) that appeared in the backcountry of Santa Barbara, California, in late January were conceived in the backyard of a hedge-fund manager turned yarn bomber. "Yarn bombing," for those out of the loop, is a public and oft-times guerrilla art form in which all kinds of objects, from parking meters to hulking vehicles, get covered in brightly covered yarn. Some may remember the Mexico City bus stitched over in 2008 by Magda Sayeg, often called the "mother of yarn bombing." Typically, yarn bombers ply their craft in urban areas for maximum exposure. But Steve Duneier, a 47-year-old Brooklyn, New York, native, is bringing it to the wild. "My goal is to draw more people into the wilderness, which I do by detonating massive, colorful yarn bombs in nature," says Duneier. (For the record, this project can't really be termed guerrilla, since he got a permit from the Los … [Read more...] about The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Eight weeks’ jail for CEO who assaulted cabby, dislocating victim’s shoulder
SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/Asia News Network): The chief executive of a private investment holding company who assaulted a taxi driver and dislocated the man's shoulder was on Thursday (June 30) sentenced to eight weeks' jail for committing the offence. Briton Paul John Murphy, 61, was also fined S$1,000 for performing a negligent act that could endanger the personal safety of others. Murphy, CEO of PWS Holdings, had opened a passenger door of the taxi he was travelling in, causing a near collision, and assaulted the driver, Elgin Lee, who had asked him to shut the door. On April 7, District Judge Ong Chin Rhu convicted Murphy of the offences following a trial. The court heard that Murphy had gone to the Singapore Recreation Club in Connaught Drive near the Padang for a drinking session on March 2, 2018. Elgin Lee later picked him up at the club at around 10pm that day. The cabby was driving towards Murphy's home when he stopped his vehicle at a red light at the exit of … [Read more...] about Eight weeks’ jail for CEO who assaulted cabby, dislocating victim’s shoulder
Netanyahu Cancels UN Deal on African Migrants in Shock Reversal
Jerusalem: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cancelled an agreement with the UN refugee agency on Tuesday aimed at avoiding forced deportations of thousands of African migrants only hours after having announced the deal himself. The stunning turnaround after Netanyahu announced the accord in a televised address on Monday afternoon came as he faced mounting pressure from his right-wing base. The UN refugee agency urged Netanyahu to reconsider. Yesterday's announcement drew immediate anger from right-wing politicians, including Netanyahu allies, and many of his traditional supporters. After the deluge of criticism, the premier said in a late-night Facebook post on Monday he was suspending the agreement that would have allowed thousands of the migrants to remain in Israel at least temporarily. Today, he said the deal was being cancelled outright after having held discussions on it. "After having heard numerous comments on the agreement, I have examined the pros and cons … [Read more...] about Netanyahu Cancels UN Deal on African Migrants in Shock Reversal

Tiger Fleeing Assam’s Flooded Kaziranga Makes a Pit Stop at Scrap Shop, Curls Up in Bed to ‘Relax’
Guwahati: “A tiger’s life is as important as human life,” said Motilal, a scrap dealer who hosted a Royal Bengal tiger in his shop in Bagori range of Kaziranga in Assam. Motilal was sitting in his shop on Thursday morning when he heard people shout “Tiger, Tiger!”. As soon as Motilal stepped outside, he saw the tiger approaching his shop, from a distance of about 20 feet. “It looked at me and did nothing... It just silently made its way into the shop and went and sat on the bed inside the room,” narrated Motilal. “I ran for my life when I spotted it. The tiger was panting and was visibly tired,” he added. The tiger is believed to have strayed out of the Kaziranga National Park to move to the higher reaches of Karbi hills through National Highway 37 as the annual flood in Assam has inundated more than 90% of Kaziranga National Park. Finding no other place, it took shelter at the shop in Harmoti, near Bagori range of the park in Nagaon district. After a 10-hour wait, the animal … [Read more...] about Tiger Fleeing Assam’s Flooded Kaziranga Makes a Pit Stop at Scrap Shop, Curls Up in Bed to ‘Relax’
