On July 21 2017, a plane destined for Corfu failed to accelerate at the necessary speed and struck an approach light at the end of a runway. The Canadian Boeing 737, owned by Sunwing Airlines, was taking off from Belfast International Airport taking holidaymakers to Greece at around 3.45pm. The report states that an outside air temperature of -52C was mistakenly entered into the Flight Management Computer by a member of the aircraft crew, instead of the actual temperature of 16C. The plane then took off from the airport with “insufficient power to meet regulated performance requirements” and struck the light. Heathrow passengers delayed after runway lighting problem

The problem left some London-bound passengers stranded on the tarmac at US airports. Twitter user Shaan Khan wrote from New York: “We are on BA116 and ground staff at JFK Airport not opening the door so we can talk to someone. Pilot growing impatient as are passengers.” Passenger Davey Hunt posted: “On the ground in Atlanta due to Heathrow light failure. The bar is open and I’m not working tomorrow so not that fussed.” Heathrow said the problem was resolved by 6.05am, but that customers should still check their flight status with their airline before travelling. World Heathrow Airport in London is reportedly shut down after passengers complained of "runway light failures." British Airways customers at several locations including New York, New Orleans, Miami and Boston told The Sun that their planes en route to London were stuck on the tarmac on Tuesday evening. According to the report, the passengers were told that there was an apparent electrical outage at the airline's main terminal in London. British Airways flight 116 was already on the runway before crew members were told to take the plane back to the gate, according to The Sun. Heathrow chaos as British Airways planes grounded after passengers complain of ‘runway light failures’
PLANES have reportedly been grounded as passengers complain of 'runway light failures' at Heathrow Airport. British Airways customers claim they are stuck waiting on the tarmac at several airports including in New York, New Orleans, Miami and Boston. Passengers say they were told the issues are due to an apparent electrical outage at the main terminal in London. BA flight 116 managed to reach the runway before crew were told to turn back to the gate. Flights already in the air are seemingly unaffected, according to flight data.
