AIRLINES must compensate passengers who have slept on the floor, been forced into hotels and had to abandon their holidays because of a rogue drone at Gatwick, Chris Grayling has warned. The Transport Secretary pleaded with airlines and travel companies to treat their claims reasonably after hundreds of thousands were affected by the total shutdown of the airport. Airlines will only have to pay compensation to passengers when the delay is the airline's fault - like if crew were late or technical problems. But as the chaos was caused by what is thought to be an "eco warrior" drone, it means they might not have to. Thousands of passengers have been left grounded or diverted just days before Christmas after dozens of sightings of a drone on the runway. The Transport Secretary told Radio 4 today that compensation "goes beyond what the airlines have power over" and it "should be covered under travel insurance policies". But he begged airlines to "treat claims reasonably" and added that he … [Read more...] about Gatwick passengers must be compensated by airlines for flight hell after drone chaos, Grayling warns
Airline canceled flight compensation
MICHAEL O'Leary is the chief executive of budget airline Ryanair. One of the richest men in Ireland, O'Leary built his reputation on an abrasive management style and his occasionally hostile public statements — but what is the latest controversy surrounding his airline and what is his net worth? Who is Michael O'Leary? Michael Kevin O'Leary, 56, was born in Kanturk, County Cork, on 20 March 1961. He went on to study Economic and Social Studies at Trinity College Dublin, graduating in 1983. After working at Stokes Kennedy Crowley, later known as KPMG, O'Leary became a personal tax adviser to Tony Ryan, head of Guiness Peat Aviation, a plane leasing firm. Tony Ryan went on to set up Ryanair in the late eighties, but it was massively unprofitable and O'Leary was dispatched on a fact-finding mission to see what could be learned from budget Southwest Airlines in the US. O'Leary was appointed deputy chief executive in 1991 and became chief executive in 1994. Since then he has … [Read more...] about Who is Michael O’Leary, what’s he said about Ryanair’s cancelled flights and what’s his net worth?
On Tuesday Ryanair employees called for a 24-hour strike Wednesday, potentially leaving passengers stranded while they wait on delayed or cancelled flights. A similar strike in August resulted in 400 cancelled flights, affecting around 55,000 passengers. The announcement of the show-down followed two budget airline slow-downs this weekend: On Friday, an Easyjet flight made a trip from Berlin Tegel to Berlin Schönefeld after technical problems stopped it from reaching its Swiss destination. And on Saturday an Eurowings flight made a six hour journey from Cologne to Cologne after it was forced to turn back and land due to bad weather. What rights do passengers have in the event of flight cancellations or delays? This has been regulated uniformly in the EU since 2005. If you get stuck longer than three hours because of a delayed or cancelled flight, you are entitled to vouchers for drinks and food during the waiting period. If necessary, you also have a right to … [Read more...] about When are airline passengers in Germany entitled to flight compensation?
However, the budget airline is being taken to court by a Belgian consumer group, who say under EU legislation passengers are entitled to between 250 and 600 euros ($285-$690) in compensation payouts. A ruling this year by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled against another airline which cited "extraordinary circumstances" over a strike by aircrew, allowing passengers to claim. Here are some of the key points: - Which flights are covered by the EU legislation? - All flights taking off from airports in the "Community Space" of European Union countries, plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland, irrespective of the airline's nationality or the flight's destination. For flights arriving from outside the "Community Space", only those operated by an airline from within the zone and a destination within the zone are covered. - When is a flight late? - For flights of less than 1,500 kilometres: two hours. For flights of between 1,500 kms and 3,500 kms (930 miles and 2,100 miles) and … [Read more...] about Cancellations and compensation: what rights do Ryanair passengers have?
