Traveling to Italy? These Cities Are Fighting Against Mass Tourism

· May 3, 2018 ·

Venice is not simply sinking—it's flooded with tourists and the city's mayor is willing to do whatever it takes to regulate the wave of visitors, including closing down certain streets and bridges. The Easter weekend, at the beginning of April, saw thousands of tourists crowding Venetian streets and traditional canal ferries known as vaporetti , with local media reporting "a river of people" of an "unprecedented" proportion creating delays and long lines. Mass tourism is not a new phenomenon for Italy, but the number of visitors to the "Bel Paese" is increasing to a point where several cities are wondering whether the inconvenience created to local residents is worth putting up with. Venice Venice Mayor Luigi Brugnaro has been campaigning for more regulation since he was elected three years ago. In 2016, he won the government's support to install turnstiles at strategic locations in the city to regulate the influx of visitors. But increased numbers of tourists during the … [Read more...] about Traveling to Italy? These Cities Are Fighting Against Mass Tourism

13th Great-Idea China Sourcing & New Industrial Delegation to China – Day 2

· April 19, 2012 ·

We woke up to a bright, beautiful and warm morning in Shanghai. The nice weather was greatly appreciated as the Delegation was up and out early, traveling to the Shanghai Pudong Software Park (Park). The Park is only 12 years old and is currently home to 1,086 companies. Two of these companies are in Forbes’ Top 20. Additionally, companies such as Citi, Texas Instruments, Olympus, Sony, Kyocera, Tell Labs and Qualcomm, each have offices within the Park.During our visit we were taken to the first location and given a short presentation describing the size of the Park, the various campuses that comprise the Park and the development cost of each campus. After the presentation, we traveled to a second location which was quite stunning, as it contained a central lake surrounded by several buildings and beautiful landscaping. The lake contained docks that were staffed with paddle and small motor boats. Interestingly, the campus was very quiet; there was very little activity, at least … [Read more...] about 13th Great-Idea China Sourcing & New Industrial Delegation to China – Day 2

DOL’s New Joint Employer Interpretation Seeks To Hold More Employers Accountable

· February 1, 2016 ·

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) issued a new Administrator’s Interpretation (AI) that emphasizes the agency’s intent to apply joint employer status more broadly under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and the Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Protection Act (MSPA). Even though the definition of joint employment under these acts has not changed, the DOL made it clear that it will examine dual employer relationships closely with what appears to be an intent to find joint employer status in more circumstances.Of course, companies engaged as a “dual employer” generally seek to avoid joint employer status. Being a joint employer in the eyes of the DOL can result in liability for the acts of a client that has the primary responsibility to direct and control employees. This is not a favorable place to be. Temporary staffing agencies and PEOs do not have enough control over workers assigned to a client location to assume such liability. As a result, such … [Read more...] about DOL’s New Joint Employer Interpretation Seeks To Hold More Employers Accountable

Kamala Harris kicks off campaign with massive rally, defends her record as a prosecutor

· January 26, 2019 ·

OAKLAND — Kamala Harris kicked off her 2020 presidential campaign Sunday with a massive hometown rally that put her Democratic presidential rivals on notice and sought to bolster her progressive credentials despite her years of working as a prosecutor. With a crowd estimated at over 10,000 exploding with applause as Harris took the stage at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza, the gravity of the moment seemed to momentarily overwhelm the senator.“So, here we are, here we are,” she said with a broad smile. “Let me tell you, I am so proud to be a daughter of Oakland, California.“We were raised by a community with a deep belief in the promise of our country and a deep understanding of the parts of that promise that still remain unfulfilled,” Harris said before devoting the bulk of her speech to those unfulfilled parts of the American experiment. But first, Harris needed to address the elephant in the room: her former career in law enforcement. Since announcing her her … [Read more...] about Kamala Harris kicks off campaign with massive rally, defends her record as a prosecutor
