A Chinese coronavirus vaccine is set to be rolled out in Turkey later this month, with some Latin American country also in line to receive COVID-19 shots developed in the East Asian nation over the coming months. On Wednesday, Turkish health minister Fahrettin Koca said his country had ordered 50 million doses of the CoronaVac vaccine produced by China's Sinovac Biotech pharmaceutical company, with the first shipment set to arrive on December 11, according to a statement. Turkish labs will assess the safety of the vaccine and initial results from Phase III clinical trials, with an emergency use authorization possible soon, he said. "If developments continue positively as we expect, Turkey would be among the first countries in the world to begin vaccinations in the early phase," Koca said. The Taiwan Tangle: How US-China Tensions Have Pushed ASEAN into A Corner
As ASEAN marks its 55th anniversary, its midyear foreign ministers’ meeting (AMM) of 3 August 2022 was as usual accompanied by two important ministerial meetings of ASEAN-centric bodies. The AMM was followed by the 12th East Asia Summit (EAS) foreign ministers meeting and the 29th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) ministerial meeting — both on 5 August. These meetings were chaired by the current ASEAN chairman, Cambodia, through Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. India was represented by Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). External Affairs Minister (EAM) Dr S Jaishankar had attended the ASEAN-India meeting on 3 August. The ASEAN Regional Forum in this set of meetings is most important because it meets only at the ministerial level. The EAS FMs report into the EAS summit which is held along with the ASEAN summit in November annually. The ARF is mainly a security-related institution and … [Read more...] about The Taiwan Tangle: How US-China Tensions Have Pushed ASEAN into A Corner
In a rare move, China sanctions seven Taiwanese officials
The political fallout from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 's recent visit to Taiwan continued on Tuesday, as China announced new sanctions against seven Taiwanese officials and lawmakers. The newly targeted "diehard 'Taiwan independence' elements" included Hsiao Bi-khim, Taiwan's envoy in Washington, as well as Wellington Koo, who is national security adviser to President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan. They join Beijing's blacklist of 10 Taiwanese politicians, all but one of whom are from the island's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). "For some time, a small number of diehard 'Taiwan independence' elements, out of their personal interests, have gone to great lengths to collude with external forces to pursue 'independence' provocations," China 's official Xinhua News Agency said, quoting a spokesperson from the Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) in Beijing. "They have deliberately instigated cross-strait confrontation and recklessly undermined peace and stability in the Taiwan … [Read more...] about In a rare move, China sanctions seven Taiwanese officials
U.S. must challenge “gorilla” China over Taiwan missile tests: Official
A senior U.S. Navy officer described China as a "gorilla in the room" on Tuesday as he argued for pushback against Chinese military drills that would soon create a new status quo around Taiwan. Vice Admiral Karl Thomas, who commands the Seventh Fleet, said Beijing threatened busy commercial shipping lanes around Taiwan when it launched ballistic missiles earlier this month, some of which traveled over the democratically governed island, landing in its surrounding waters. The move was a stated response, which the White House has called an overreaction, to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi 's recent visit to Taiwan. At least five of the projectiles —Taipei said it detected 11 in total—landed in Japan's exclusive economic zone, drawing protests from the U.S. treaty ally that is also home to tens of thousands of American troops. Speaking in Singapore ahead of the Southeast Asia Cooperation and Training naval exercise, commonly known as SEACAT, Thomas said: "It's very important … [Read more...] about U.S. must challenge “gorilla” China over Taiwan missile tests: Official
China’s One-Child Policy Brings the Challenge of an Aging Population
April 25: An elderly Chinese man talks to a child on a street of Daxing district in Beijing, China. China's population is aging rapidly and half the people now live in cities, the government said Thursday, April 28, 2011. The data from a national census carried out late last year will fuel debate about whether China should continue with its "one-child" policy, experts said. (AP2011) NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! China has a problem, a rapidly aging population. It’s a problem that some Asian countries, including Japan, have already faced, and one that is causing persistent struggles as economies continue to stagnate. While it doesn’t seem a problem on the scale of the economic difficulties being faced in the United States right now, it could well have much greater consequences for the world in the longer term. China has created the problem in part, themselves, through its strict one-child policy for families. Its argument has always been … [Read more...] about China’s One-Child Policy Brings the Challenge of an Aging Population
Taliban Asks World for (Financial) ‘Cooperation’ at Afghanistan Victory Event
Taliban “foreign minister” Amir Khan Muttaqi urged the world to “cooperate with” the Sunni terrorist organization, rather than “sanction” it, at an event to mark the one-year anniversary of the fall of the government of Afghanistan on Monday. The Taliban declared Monday a national holiday – “Kabul Conquest Day” – and celebrated with a televised event featuring Taliban leaders making outrageous claims to achievements in “culture and literature” under their rule and vowing the full “implementation of the Islamic system” on the population of Afghanistan. The Taliban is a radical Muslim terrorist group that previously presided over a violent regime from 1996 to 2001 in the country, losing power after the United States invaded in response to the September 11 jihadist attacks. Taliban leaders returned to power on August 15, 2021, after leftist President Joe Biden broke a promise made under predecessor Donald Trump that American troops would leave the country by May 1, announcing an … [Read more...] about Taliban Asks World for (Financial) ‘Cooperation’ at Afghanistan Victory Event

Explained | Why is the visit of a Chinese vessel to Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port controversial?
The story so far: On August 13, Sri Lanka approved the arrival of a Chinese satellite-tracking vessel to its southern Chinese-funded Hambantota port. It was the second approval from the island nation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, after it first cleared the visit on July 12. In the weeks in between, India raised concerns over the ship’s visit with President Ranil Wickremesinghe, and officially commented on it, while Indian media splashed headlines of a “Chinese spy ship” hovering in the Indian Ocean. Caught in a delicate diplomatic and geopolitical spot, Colombo gave its nod after “extensive consultations” with “all parties”. What is the vessel? Yuan Wang 5 was described by the Sri Lankan government as a “scientific research ship”. The BRISL (Belt & Road Initiative Sri Lanka), a Colombo-based organisation studying China’s ambitious connectivity project, was the first to draw attention to the visit in a Twitter post late July. It said that the Yuan Wang 5 will conduct … [Read more...] about Explained | Why is the visit of a Chinese vessel to Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port controversial?
Chinese vessel Yuan Wang 5 reaches Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port
China’s satellite tracking vessel Yuan Wang 5 on August 16 arrived at Sri Lanka’s southern Hambantota Port, despite India and the U.S. voicing concern with Colombo over the military ship’s visit. Hours after the vessel reached the Sri Lankan port, China said the “marine scientific research” activities of the vessel were “consistent with international law” and did not impact “any other country’s security interests”. According to Colombo-based official sources, both India and the U.S. had conveyed their apprehensions to the Sri Lankan Government at the highest level, citing the vessel’s “military capabilities” while in the Indian Ocean Region. Apparently addressing the concerns, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin on August 16 said, “I want to stress again that the marine scientific research activities of the Yuan Wang 5 ship are consistent with international law and international common practice. They do not affect the security and the economic interests of any country … [Read more...] about Chinese vessel Yuan Wang 5 reaches Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port
