Dad torn apart online after sleeping with daughter’s “very pretty” friend

June 27, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A man is being dragged online after confessing to a one-night stand with his daughter's best friend. User u/Affectionate_Tea_852 drew the wrath of the internet after sharing his story to Reddit 's TrueOffMyChest forum on June 26. In his post, the divorced dad explained that his daughter has a "very pretty 21-year-old friend" that he "couldn't resist," but is now regretting his decision to spend the night with her. He wrote: "'if I was younger, I'd totally date her. "She's my type. Blonde, tall, cute face, kind etc.'' Although the woman had always been "nice to him," they had recently begun flirting. He wrote: "She started calling me daddy over text, she said 'your daughter is so lucky, I wish you were my daddy.' "She texted me at night to ask me a question (it was an excuse, of course), I replied to the question, but she kept the conversation going. "She said 'I'm in bed right now but can't sleep... honestly I'd totally want a hug.'" The poster said he's "not a horny … [Read more...] about Dad torn apart online after sleeping with daughter’s “very pretty” friend

Tinder Aims to Make Online Dating Safer With ID Verification Option Globally

August 18, 2021 by www.news18.com

Tinder has announced the company will make ID Verification available to members worldwide in the “coming quarters.” The Match Group-owned online dating platform said the company would consider expert recommendations and local laws and regulations before the global rollout. Tinder adds that ID Verification will be voluntary, and there’s no information on whether it will become a mandatory norm in future. As the name suggests, ID Verifications will essentially let users verify their profile’s authenticity by certified documents. The feature has been available in Japan since 2019, where users can provide a passport or license for verification, but that may vary from place to place. The platform might also offer a badge (say in the form of a blue tick) to show the profile’s authenticity, which in turn would curb catfishing practices on the platform. In a press note, the company explains that ID Verification is complex, and Tinder wants to take a “test-and-learn approach” before the … [Read more...] about Tinder Aims to Make Online Dating Safer With ID Verification Option Globally

The Viral Online Challenge Is Never Coming Back

May 24, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

Ten years ago this month, the Harvard men’s baseball team put a video on YouTube in which they danced and lip-synched to Carly Rae Jepsen’s No. 1 hit, “Call Me Maybe.” It was funny because, well, you know: They were muscle-y boys with serious jawlines, and they were doing choreography that involved punching the ceiling of a van; this was back when a lot of people thought that pop songs were really stupid and for girls. So the video got really popular. Then other groups of people started to film themselves doing their own versions of the song: college students in Idaho; the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders ; the U.S. Olympic swim team . Maybe you, too, were inclined to dance and lip-synch to Carly Rae Jepsen’s No. 1 hit, “Call Me Maybe,” with your friends and post it to the internet. This is how one of the first super-viral “challenges” on social media was born. Planking, where people filmed or photographed themselves lying flat—like a plank—in unexpected places, had already … [Read more...] about The Viral Online Challenge Is Never Coming Back

Train services face further disruption as talks resume over strikes

June 21, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Train services will continue to be disrupted on Wednesday by this week’s rail strikes as talks resume in a bid to resolve a bitter dispute over jobs, pay and conditions. Fewer than one in five trains ran on Tuesday after members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) on Network Rail (NR) and 13 train operators staged the first of three walkouts, with strikes set to follow on Thursday and Saturday. RMT members on London Underground also went on strike on Tuesday. The joint action caused travel chaos across the UK, with journeys taking longer and roads rammed with traffic as people switched to cars or buses to get to work. The chaos will continue on Wednesday, with only 60% of trains running, mainly due to a delay to the start of services as signallers and control room staff are not doing overnight shifts. Recommended Russia says EU sanctions that prompted transit ban ‘unacceptable’ The RMT will meet with NR and the train companies on … [Read more...] about Train services face further disruption as talks resume over strikes

Pensioners forced to pay more for parking as they can’t use technology to book online

June 30, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

The midday sun is blazing down on the car park next to the picturesque harbour at Wells-Next-The-Sea… and on a line of dismayed pensioners standing in front of the pay station. Most of them have arrived with coins ready to pay, but a sign says it’s £6 for two hours by cash, but £1 an hour and £4 all day if they pay online. “I think it’s just wrong,” says a flustered Diane Burton, who is holding a fistful of pound coins. “I’m 75, I don’t know how to do that. “Most older people have mobile phones , but only for making calls, not for paying for things or anything else. They’re making us pay more to park here just because we belong to a different generation.” Diane and Stanley Burton ( Image: Albanpix.com,) Her husband, 79-year-old Stanley, agrees: “We didn’t have computers when I was at school, just slates and beads. I’m completely computer illiterate. “It seems like they’re making it harder for older people, when they really should be trying to make our lives … [Read more...] about Pensioners forced to pay more for parking as they can’t use technology to book online

“Open house”: Realtor dragged for leaving key in front door

July 1, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The way a realtor left a door after a viewing has shocked the internet this week after a picture captured viral attention. Shared on Reddit on Thursday, user u/DilleyOnMyWilly posted the picture alongside the caption: "The realtor left my front door like this after a showing." In the picture, the door handle is shown with the key still in the lock and the lock box wide open. With more than 9,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments, Redditors shared the poster's frustrations. One reply said: "When you want to do an open house but the realtor understands differently." "I would assume she is trying to give your house away," said another reply. "Today's realtors seriously don't give a f***," wrote another Redditor. "They're so used to the easy money rolling in from the crazy market that they don't pay attention to shit." As first-time buyers face increasing difficulty in finding property thanks to surging mortgage interest rates and inflation, realtors are working with a … [Read more...] about “Open house”: Realtor dragged for leaving key in front door

Emma Thompson called ‘disappointing and offensive’ for wearing ‘gross’ Matilda fat suit

June 22, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

British actress Emma Thompson has faced immense backlash from fans who have accused her of being 'disappointing and offensive' for donning a fat suit in the Matilda adaptation. In the brand-new musical adaption of the 1996 flick, Emma, 63, portrays Agatha Trunchbull - the terrifying and cruel headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School from Roald Dahl’s now iconic book. Emma, who has also starred in Love Actually and Sense and Sensibility, underwent an almost unrecognisable transformation for her role as Ms Trunchbull with heavy prosthetics and a the addition of a fat suit. Following the release of the highly-anticipated trailer, the new flick has been blasted as 'offensive' due to the Emma's transformation and the 'unnecessary' need to make her appear larger than she is with the help of the fat suit. Metro columnist Emmie Harrison-West appeared to kickstart the heated debate on Twitter as she pointed out the previous times Emma has donned fat suits in order to appear a … [Read more...] about Emma Thompson called ‘disappointing and offensive’ for wearing ‘gross’ Matilda fat suit

Fury over wife refusing sex with husband unless he shaves beard: “His body”

June 23, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A not-so-happily married woman has sparked debate online after revealing that she is refusing to have sex with her husband while he has a beard. Compromise may be the key to a happy marriage but, in this instance, neither side is willing to concede any ground in what is essentially a disagreement over facial hair. As the disgruntled wife in this tale of woe puts it on Mumsnet: "He likes his beard. I hate it." Her aversion to facial hair bucks the trend when it comes to women and beards . A 2020 study by scientists from the University of Queensland saw 919 women tasked with rating a series of male faces based on their eligibility as a partner. Time and time again, the women ranked the faces with notably " masculine " features like facial hair as more attractive. Beards were found to be particularly popular among those women "with the strongest reproductive ambition." However, for the woman posting to Mumsnet under the handle headache, it was a little more complicated … [Read more...] about Fury over wife refusing sex with husband unless he shaves beard: “His body”

What Facebook and Google Can Learn From America’s First Major News Hoax

October 12, 2017 by www.theatlantic.com

In the age of the platform, how can anybody be sure that the news they read is true? Last week, lies, hoaxes, and rumors prevailed on Facebook and Google following the mass murder in Las Vegas. The sites promoted stories claiming that the killer was a Rachel Maddow fan, or an ISIS follower—both false. As gatekeepers of valuable information, the platforms failed , The Atlantic ’s Alexis Madrigal wrote. This was a familiar story. After the 2016 election, Russian propaganda and false memes on Facebook elevated “fake news” in the national lexicon. Today, with two-thirds of Americans getting their news from editor-free social media sites , the veracity of news stories is, itself, a major news story. For Facebook and Google, the rise of misinformation is a Frankenstein monster unleashed by their own technology. How can these companies rein in their dangerous creation? The briefest and most honest answer today is it won’t be easy. But some key lessons of the intractability of bad … [Read more...] about What Facebook and Google Can Learn From America’s First Major News Hoax
