(Getty Images) DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — A woman from the United Arab Emirates whose apparent awakening from a 27-year-long stupor has grabbed international headlines is a rare but not unique case, one of the German doctors who treated her says. The story of Munira Abdulla was first published by Abu Dhabi’s The National newspaper on Monday. The newspaper reported that in 1991, Abdulla was with her son when a school bus collided with their car. Her son, cradled by his mother before the crash, escaped with a bruise to the head. Abdulla was 32 at the time. That same son, himself now 32, was quoted saying his mother regained consciousness in a German hospital last year. A photo shows her in a wheelchair visiting the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, where she now resides. Friedemann Mueller, the principal consultant at the Schoen Clinic in Bad Aibling, told German news site Spiegel Online that his patient had until recently been in a state of “minimal consciousness,” … [Read more...] about Emirati woman wakes up from stupor after 27 years

ALGERIA’S ailing President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has been forced out of office by the country’s army following six weeks of mass protests. The 82-year-old was ousted in the wake of the Arab Spring style demonstrations led by young people demanding change in the North African nation. His departure was hastened when army chief of staff Lieutenant General Ahmed Gaed Salah demanded the veteran ruler be declared immediately unfit for office. Bouteflika has largely disappeared from public view since suffering a stroke in 2013. Hundreds of students marched early on Tuesday through the capital Algiers, many carrying banners which read "the army and the people are one" and "game over". They called for a new system in a country where more than one in four Algerians under the age of 30 - some 70 percent of the population - are unemployed. Algeria has transformed during the protests, with people losing fear of criticising the government and state media first ignoring and then, after a … [Read more...] about Algeria’s strong-man President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, 82, forced to quit by army after 20 years in power following massive Arab Spring-style protests

DONALD Trump has cancelled the annual Christmas party with the White House press corps. The get together has traditionally been an opportunity for the media to rub shoulders with the President and his staff. But Trump has decided to pull the plug on this year’s event, Fox News reported. The cancellation comes after the president has railed against fake news and clashed with reporters. During last year’s event, the president and first lady did not pose for traditional pictures, in which guests would briefly chat with the couple near the Christmas tree before being snapped. Trump has repeatedly slammed the “fake news” media as the “enemy of the people”. He has also sparred with individual reporters, most notably CNN’s Jim Acosta, whose credentials were pulled after a contentious exchange. Trump spoke loudly over Acosta and then tried to shut him down by demanding he hand over his microphone. "Why don’t you let me run the country … [Read more...] about Donald Trump scraps Christmas press party after a year of ‘fake news’ accusations
