Oil heads for second weekly drop on recession fears
Oil prices slipped on Friday and were heading for a second weekly fall, as tight supply was overshadowed by concern that rising interest rates could push the world economy into recession. U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said on Thursday the central bank's focus on curbing inflation was "unconditional," adding to fears about more interest rate increases. Stephen Brennock of oil broker PVM said recession fears dominated sentiment, adding: "That being said, the consensus remains that the oil market will see high demand and tight supply over the summer months, thereby limiting the downside." Brent crude fell 8 cents, or 0.1%, to $109.97 a barrel by 0815 GMT. The benchmark was heading for its second weekly decline. "Increasing recession fears appear to be prompting a culling of heavy speculative long positioning... even as in the real world, energy tightness is as real as ever," said Jeffrey Halley, analyst at brokerage OANDA. Oil came close this year to an all-time high … [Read more...] about Oil heads for second weekly drop on recession fears

‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’
As Russia’s access to its traditional markets of exports and imports are hugely limited following its Ukraine invasion and the subsequent sanctions, Moscow is looking to develop new trade and investment relations with partners in Asia, including India, China and Southeast Asian countries, said Russian aluminium tycoon Oleg Deripaska. Speaking on the sidelines of 25th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), also known as the ‘Russian Davos’, Mr. Deripaska, founder of RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers, said there’s an understanding that “the new normal” would fundamentally change Russia’s economic reality. To facilitate such a shift, he said, Russia needed to create the same kind of infrastructure as it had built over the 12 years, from 1991 to 2003, with Europe. This includes setting up new logistics routes and related infrastructure, customs procedures, trade agreements, infrastructure for settlements, gaining access to debt capital markets and … [Read more...] about ‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the war in Ukraine has added to the disruptions caused by climate change, the coronavirus pandemic and inequality to produce an “unprecedented global hunger crisis” already affecting hundreds of millions of people. “There is a real risk that multiple famines will be declared in 2022,” he said in a video message to officials from dozens of rich and developing countries gathered in Berlin. “And 2023 could be even worse.” Mr. Guterres noted that harvests across Asia, Africa and the Americas will take a hit as farmers around the world struggle to cope with rising fertilizer and energy prices. “This year's food access issues could become next year's global food shortage,” he said. “No country will be immune to the social and economic repercussions of such a catastrophe.” Mr. Guterres said UN negotiators … [Read more...] about United Nations chief Antonio Guterres warns of ‘catastrophe’ from global food shortage

With new owners, Florida Project motel dwellers must leave
KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) — Residents at a motel along a tourist strip not far from Walt Disney World that was used as the setting for the 2017 film “The Florida Project" were told that they must vacate on short notice because the complex has been sold to another owner. Residents of the Magic Castle Inn & Suites were told last Monday that the hotel had been purchased and the new owners were forcing everyone out, local media reported. Because the Magic Castle was a motel, the new owners don't have to follow the same eviction procedures that a landlord would for removing tenants from a rental apartment. “Now I have to find a home and a job,” Heather Squires, who paid for her room by working at the motel, told the Orlando Sentinel. “That’s a lot to dump on someone in less than 24 hours.” The lavender-painted hotel was the setting for the movie that, through the eyes of a young girl, told a story of poverty and resilience at the pay-by-the-week motel that was the home of last resort … [Read more...] about With new owners, Florida Project motel dwellers must leave
