‘Acrobatics’ with a Twist–No Adobe

· February 28, 2007 ·

We tried Adobe Acrobat in Lotus Notes mail, and it did the job very well. It allowed us to take one, some or all of our e-mails and preserve them in an Acrobat file. Attachments were also preserved in our limited testing. Similar Acrobat buttons add functionality to Microsoft Office applications. But with success comes imitators. Do an Internet search of “PDF utilities” and you will find a plethora of Acrobat wannabes. Third party applications that do some of what Acrobat does, or extend what Acrobat does, range in price from free to more than $170. The third party applications tend to focus narrowly, and some beat Acrobat regarding certain functions. Some are low cost enough to merit consideration by the cost conscious. Acrobat AlternativesAmong the various options to try are:• Abbyy PDF Transformer 2.0. This is a favorite of ours. Its optical character recognition functionality is superb. Transformer appears to have the best OCR of any … [Read more...] about ‘Acrobatics’ with a Twist–No Adobe

Integrated Colorado Courts E-filing System Tips for Probate/Trust Filers

· June 28, 2015 ·

We have all heard that the secret to someone’s heart is great food; well, in our professional realm, I venture to say that the secret to the probate clerk’s heart is a properly done filing.  In order to determine exactly what that means, I surveyed some of the Colorado probate registrars. The following are tips from their feedback along with those that I have discovered myself:Scan and upload EACH document separately and label each of them clearly.  Exhibits should not be attached to the petition or motion, but each should instead be loaded separately.  You should provide a detailed description of each document (e.g. rather than “Exhibit 1”, title the document “Exhibit 1 to the Petition to Approve Accounting: June 2015 Statement for ABC Bank Account”).  Codicils should be uploaded as separate documents from the Will and should be identified accordingly (e.g. “First Codicil to the Will dated May 1, 2015”).  I … [Read more...] about Integrated Colorado Courts E-filing System Tips for Probate/Trust Filers

The Force of E-Filing

· January 31, 2006 ·

Last November was an anniversary of sorts for electronic filing, a system that uses digital documents in court filings to replace the paper filings used in centuries past. The federal courts marked 10 years since the introduction of an electronic filing system, unflatteringly known by the acronym CM/ECF. It is the largest e-filing effort to date. But while the federal courts’ move toward digital documents is nearly complete, the rest of the country is mostly just getting on board. An example: Sixteen months ago the DuPage County Circuit Court became one of the first court systems in the state of Illinois to accept electronic court documents.Though e-filing has long been heralded as the future of the practice of law, no one had any idea what would happen when DuPage launched its system. Few expected nothing would happen, but nothing, in a manner of speaking, did.Even though the software vendors who built the system in the suburban Chicago county advertised extensively with … [Read more...] about The Force of E-Filing
