MORE than a week’s rain fell in four hours yesterday as freak downpours continued to batter the country. Lightning tore through the sky as 20mm drenched London and the South East from 1pm to 5pm. Tourists wrapped up in capes in Leicester Square. It comes after Birmingham saw a month of rain in an hour on Sunday. The Met Office’s Nicola Maxey said: “Heavy bursts are going to continue.” UK lightning strikes and storms left thousands of passengers stranded yesterday as flights and trains were cancelled - and more rain is on the way. INTENSE thunderstorms and torrential rain lashed the country over the May 26 Bank Holiday, with around 15,000 lightning strikes in four hours on Saturday night. THE Shard is struck by a lightning bolt in this stunning picture - as a spectacular electrical storm swept the UK overnight. London's iconic skyscraper is shown directly hit by the vast fork of lightning as thunderstorms blasted Britain after a day of muggy 27C temperatures. And the worst is till to come, with thunder and lightning forecast daily right until Wednesday. Social media users were in awe of the spectacular display, which began shortly after 11pm on Saturday night and were mainly concentrated in regions of South England. BRITS have today been warned there could be an inch of torrential rain in just one hour as 14 million drivers take to the roads for the Bank Holiday weekend. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning which suggests some homes and businesses could be "flooded quickly" and other buildings could be damaged by lightning strikes and thunderstorms. Their message says fast-flowing or "deep floodwater" could cause a "danger to life" and comes as 14 million drivers are expected to hit the roads between Friday and Monday. Brits were also warned that flooding could lead to "difficult driving conditions" and road closures in what could be a hellish weekend for motorists.
