The North County Farms project got its third thumbs-down this week, when the Oceanside Planning Commission recommended denial of the plan to build up to 656 homes, a boutique hotel, restaurants, retail shops and more in the city’s last remaining agricultural region.Twice before the commission has opposed North County Farms, saying the city needs to preserve the rural nature of South Morro Hills, and that the proposed development would bring too much traffic to an area only accessible by a single, two-lane road. Each time, the developer, Integral Communities, has revised its proposal. It reduced the number of homes -- originally almost 1,000 -- added off-site road improvements and increased the acreage to be set aside as open space. Final approval is up to the Oceanside City Council, which is scheduled to get its first formal review of the project May 22.“We were disappointed ... in light of all the revisions we made,” Integral project manager Ninia Hammond said in an … [Read more...] about Oceanside’s North County Farms project gets third thumbs-down

Adams County commissioners on Wednesday once again halted new applications for oil and gas drilling permits over fears they’ll see a rush of applicants — this time due to the bill currently before the legislature that would vastly overhaul regulation of the industry. All five county commissioners voted in favor of the moratorium, which comes as state legislators advance a bill that its backers say consists of “the most sweeping oil and gas reforms” the state has seen. The moratorium goes into effect immediately and can last as long as six months. Senate Bill 19-181 would give local governments greater control to regulate the industry via their planning and land-use powers. The bill has been approved by the state Senate and is now moving its way through House committees. The board’s chair Steve O’Dorisio said the moratorium will provide a “time out” while Adams County’s oil and gas regulations are revamped, pending the approval of … [Read more...] about Adams County adopts new oil and gas moratorium over concerns state legislation will spark “rush” of applications
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued a food safety alert in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and 17 other states for unpasteurized milk from a Lancaster County farm. The alert comes after a New York resident was infected with an antibiotic-resistant strain of Brucella bacteria apparently linked to the farm’s raw milk. Brucella bacteria causes brucellosis, a dangerous illness that can lead to serious complications, such as heart problems, arthritis and miscarriage. The strain was found in a single cow, since removed from the milking herd, at the members-only food club Miller’s Biodiversity Farm in Quarryville, the CDC announced Friday.RELATED READ: Peaches, nectarines, plums face multi-state recallThe CDC advises people to discard any raw milk or raw milk products from the farm. Four deer at a quarantined Crow Wing County farm have been found to be infected with a virulent fatal disease, state officials said Friday. Chronic wasting disease (CWD) was detected in a nine-year-old female mule deer, a 18-month-old female whitetail deer, a two-year-old male whitetail deer and a two-year-old female mule deer at the central Minnesota farm, the Minnesota Board of Animal Health announced in a Friday news release. In 2016, two deer from the farm tested positive for the disease and the farm was quarantined. It has been monitored by the board since December 2016. No deer is allowed to leave or enter the farm, located near the town of Merrifield. "We've been working with the herd owner for the past two years to monitor the deer and look for any new detections of the disease," Linda Glaser, assistant director of the health board, said in the news release. "The biggest change following this new detection will be to extend our deadline to monitor the herd." CWD is a disease of … [Read more...] about Chronic wasting disease found at quarantined Crow Wing County farm
