A 34-year-old Saudi Phd student Salma al-Shehab, who was enrolled in UK’s Leeds University, was sentenced to 34 years in prison by Saudi officials for following and retweeting dissident accounts and their tweets. She was at home in Saudi Arabia on a holiday when she was arrested. The Saudi government accused her of using an internet website to “cause public unrest and destabilise civil and national security”. Salma was given a three-year prison sentence initially but later it was increased to a 34 years prison sentence followed by a 34 year travel ban. This has raised concerns among rights activists across the country as well as around the world as Salma’s case becomes the latest example of how crown prince Mohammed bin Salman aka MBS uses his power to curb down on dissidents. Salma was not a high-profile dissident. In the bio section of her social media accounts on Twitter and Instagram Salma describes herself as a dental hygienist, medical educator, PhD student at Leeds … [Read more...] about Phd Student Salma Shehab’s 34-year Jail Sentence Shines Light on Twitter’s Troubled Ties With Saudi

Rasul said he, his wife and five sons, the eldest now aged 20, continue to live without a fixed address, more than 20 years after the incident. The 11 convicts on Monday walked out of the Godhra sub-jail after the Gujarat government allowed their release under its remission policy. A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai on January 21, 2008, sentenced the 11 accused to life imprisonment on the charge of gang rape and murder of seven members of Bilkis Bano’s family. Allen Weisselberg Refuses to Testify Against Trump in Plea Deal
Allen Weisselberg, the chief financial officer (CFO) of the Trump Organization, Donald Trump’s business empire, is expected to reach a plea deal with prosecutors in a tax fraud case that does not require him to testify against the former president. Weisselberg and the Trump Organization pleaded not guilty last year when indicted by the Manhattan district attorney in a joint local and state investigation that accused them of not reporting tax liabilities for employee fringe benefits for several years. The relatively minor allegations were anticlimactic, given the public determination of elected Democratic prosecutors to pursue Trump for whatever crime they could find. Trump himself was not accused of breaking the law, but prosecutors hoped to turn Weisselberg against Trump by pressuring him to testify against his former boss in other investigations. That effort appears to have failed, with Weisselberg refusing to cooperate, and prosecutors reportedly considering a plea deal … [Read more...] about Allen Weisselberg Refuses to Testify Against Trump in Plea Deal
Bilkis Bano Case: SC Direction to Consider Early Release as Per 1992 Policy Paved Way for Convicts’ Release, Say Lawyers
The Supreme Court’s order directing the Gujarat government to consider the remission of sentence as per the July 1992 policy paved the way for the premature release of 11 convicts in the 2002 Bilkis Bano case, lawyers said on Tuesday. As per the current policy formulated in 2014, a person convicted for both gangrape and murder can not be released prematurely, but the 1992 policy had no such bar, a lawyer pointed out. The BJP government in the state has come under fire for the premature release of 11 men sentenced to life imprisonment for the gangrape of Bilkis Bano and the murder of seven members of her family during the 2002 post-Godhra Gujarat riots. The convicted men walked out of the Godhra sub-jail on Monday. One of them, Radheshyam Shah, had moved the Supreme Court seeking a direction to the Gujarat government to consider his application for premature release as per the government resolution or order dated July 9, 1992, said Godhra-based lawyer Parimal Pathak who represented … [Read more...] about Bilkis Bano Case: SC Direction to Consider Early Release as Per 1992 Policy Paved Way for Convicts’ Release, Say Lawyers
The Man Onstage With Salman Rushdie
The man who was about to interview Salman Rushdie at the Chautauqua Institution last Friday when a would-be murderer ran onstage with a knife is a 73-year-old former telemarketing entrepreneur from Pittsburgh named Henry Reese. He wears bow ties and speaks with a low-key, husky voice and shuns attention. But Reese and his wife, Diane Samuels, are two of the more remarkable ordinary people in America. They’ve transformed a blighted Pittsburgh street into a haven for persecuted writers and artists from around the world. It’s called City of Asylum, and it’s a physical manifestation of the universal value of free expression. This achievement has something to do with what happened on Friday, two and a half hours north of Reese’s home turf. The Chautauqua Institution is an idyllic lakeside community, with an entry gate and streets lined by picturesque Victorians, where paying visitors—a lot of them retirees from the Midwest, more middle class than coastal culture seekers—stay for a summer … [Read more...] about The Man Onstage With Salman Rushdie

R Kelly jury picked in child pornography, trial-fixing case
CHICAGO (AP) — A federal jury was impaneled Tuesday in R. Kelly's hometown of Chicago to decide multiple charges against the R&B singer, as prosecutors and defense attorneys argued toward the end of the process about whether the government was improperly attempting to keep some Blacks off the jury. Kelly, who is Black, is accused of enticing minors for sex, of producing child pornography and of fixing his 2008 state child pornography trial at which he was acquitted. As the sides began exercising peremptory challenges — in which they can remove a fixed number of potential jurors from the pool — Kelly attorney Jennifer Bonjean accused prosecutors of seeking to strike Blacks “to deny Mr. Kelly a jury of his peers.” Prosecutors noted multiple African Americans had already made it onto the jury before the defense objected, and they argued their reasons for wanting to strike some had nothing to do with race. In one case, they said one older man appeared to have a hard time staying … [Read more...] about R Kelly jury picked in child pornography, trial-fixing case

Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera asked whether the Prime Minister's statements had any meaning and said Mr. Modi should tell the country if he himself believed in his words when he spoke about the safety, respect and empowerment of women.
