"As we are in the throes of civil conflict and terrorism, resulting in the displacement of large numbers of our population, the problem is a hydra head," Osinbajo said, noting the prevalence of drug abuse in Nigeria called for attention. He called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders to step up efforts toward breaking illicit drug supply and distribution chains while also commending the agency for an impressive number of drug users it had counseled and … [Read more...] about Nigeria records increasing trend of drug abuse: vice president

Boris Johnson faces showdown talks with Prince Charles after his plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda sparked outrage. The pair are due to meet at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the capital Kigali - where the Prime Minister’s jet touches down tomorrow to kick off an eight-day diplomatic whirlwind. The summit is a few miles from the hostel where asylum seekers were due to be forced from Britain under a £120m deal. Yet the shamed Prime Minister has no plan to visit the site, after the first removal flight was grounded by the European Court of Human Rights. It will be the first time the pair have met since explosive reports the Prince of Wales branded the policy “appalling”. Clarence House has not confirmed or denied the private comments, which also include that the heir was “more than disappointed”. Government sources expect the pair to have a one-on-one "side conversation" at the margins of the summit, their first since June 3. This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 LISBON, Portugal (AP) — The Biden administration is stepping up efforts to combat illegal fishing by China, ordering federal agencies to better coordinate among themselves as well as with foreign partners in a bid to promote sustainable exploitation of the world's oceans. On Monday, the White House released its first ever National Security memo on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, or IUU, to coincide with the start of a United Nations Ocean Conference in Lisbon, Portugal. Nearly 11% of total U.S. seafood imports in 2019 worth $2.4 billion came from illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, according to the U.S. International Trade Commission, a federal agency. While China isn't named in the lengthy policy framework, language in it left little doubt where it was aimed. The memo is bound to irritate Beijing at a time of growing geopolitical competition between the … [Read more...] about Biden aims at China in new illegal fishing policy framework

A Houston woman wanted for allegedly killing her sister is now believed to have made her own son help hide the body, according to police records. Carmen White is currently on the run from law enforcement after her sister, Cynthia Cervantes, was found shot to death on April 1. Records obtained by ABC 13 News indicate that she has been charged with capital murder. The Houston Police Department initially responded to a call from an industrial metal work facility, after a witness reported finding a dead body nearby that had been burned. An autopsy later revealed the corpse to be Cervantes. A friend of White later told investigators that she had become nervous and paranoid in the days after the body was found, attempting to trade in a vehicle that police later found a significant amount of blood in. Speaking with investigators, White's ex-boyfriend said that she had asked him and his current girlfriend for help with hiding her sister's dead body, which they both declined. Alagiri condemns arrest of Teesta Setalvad
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.S. Alagiri on Monday condemned the arrest of social activist Teesta Setalvad and former Gujarat Director-General of Police R.B. Sreekumar by the Gujarat police after the Supreme Court upheld the clean chit given to Narendra Modi, the then Chief Minister of Gujarat, in the 2002 riots case. Mr. Alagiri said the Supreme Court had a duty to protect those fighting for justice. “It is unfortunate that the Supreme Court has called for action to be taken against Teesta Setalvad and others who were fighting against the ruling party, and is protecting people in the ruling party,” Mr. Alagiri said. Mr. Alagiri wondered how social activists and human rights organisations could function if the courts supported what he called the “vindictive action” against those standing up for justice. “The country is moving towards autocracy. It signals the beginning of the end of those in power,” Mr. Alagiri claimed. People’s Union for Civil Liberties, civil … [Read more...] about Alagiri condemns arrest of Teesta Setalvad
