A Louisiana judge on Monday temporarily blocked the state from enforcing its abortion ban that went into effect via a trigger law after pro-abortion groups filed a lawsuit earlier in the day. The lawsuit was filed against Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry (R) by the Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of Hope Medical Group Services, Kathaleen Pittman, and Medical Students for Choice. Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Robin M. Giarrusso set a hearing date for July 8 for both sides to make their case. Abortion, which is the procedure of killing an unborn human, went back into effect in the state following the judge’s temporary order. Louisiana has several trigger law bans that have been passed since 2006 and took effect following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization , which determined that abortion is not a constitutional right and sent the issue back to the state legislatures, therefor reversing the Supreme … [Read more...] about Louisiana Judge Temporarily Blocks Abortion Trigger Law After Lawsuit

India’s Antitrust Watchdog Orders Probe Into Roche Cancer Drug
Mumbai : Country's antitrust regulator has ordered a probe into Swiss drugmaker Roche for allegedly using anti-competitive practices to restrict cheaper copies of a blockbuster cancer drug from reaching patients. Trastuzumab has been a mainstay of Roche's profit for years and brought in global sales of about $6.7 billion in 2016, but it has been challenged in the last three years by biosimilars which are sold at about a 25 percent discount to the original. India's Biocon and US firm Mylan, which together sell biosimilars of the drug in over a dozen countries including India, filed a complaint with the Competition Commission of India (CCI) last year alleging Roche misled doctors and regulators to thwart competition to trastuzumab. India, with among the highest number of cancer patients in the world, is a big market for trastuzumab, which is indicated to treat certain forms of breast and gastric cancer. Roche first launched the drug in India in 2002 and sells it for about 75,000 … [Read more...] about India’s Antitrust Watchdog Orders Probe Into Roche Cancer Drug

Nigeria records increasing trend of drug abuse: vice president
ABUJA, June 27 (Xinhua) -- Nigeria is recording an increasing trend of drug abuse, especially in areas of conflict and in post-conflict settings, such as among the internally displaced persons and in refugee camps, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo said on Monday. This trend has become a "special concern" to the Nigerian authorities, Osinbajo said at an event organized in commemoration of the 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Drug Trafficking in Abuja, the Nigerian capital. "As we are in the throes of civil conflict and terrorism, resulting in the displacement of large numbers of our population, the problem is a hydra head," Osinbajo said, noting the prevalence of drug abuse in Nigeria called for attention. He called on the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and other stakeholders to step up efforts toward breaking illicit drug supply and distribution chains while also commending the agency for an impressive number of drug users it had counseled and … [Read more...] about Nigeria records increasing trend of drug abuse: vice president
Louisiana and Utah trigger laws banning abortions temporarily blocked by courts
Judges in Louisiana and Utah on Monday temporarily blocked prohibitions on abortion in their states following last week's U.S. Supreme Court ruling that ends a national right to the procedure. The high court on Friday overturned Roe v. Wade , which for nearly 50 years had granted women the constitutional right to an abortion. More than a dozen states set so-called trigger laws which were written to take immediate effect, banning or severely limiting abortions, in the event Roe v. Wade was overturned. A Louisiana judge on Monday issued a temporary restraining order against the state from enforcing its ban on abortions, leading to the immediate resumption of the procedure. Orleans Parish Civil District Court Judge Robin Giarrusso granted the request of plaintiffs Hope Medical Group For Women and Medical Students for Choice. Explained | What are India’s laws on abortions?
The story so far: In a significant step backwards for women’s rights in the U.S., the Supreme Court overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade judgement of 1973, which gave women in America the right to have an abortion before the foetus is viable outside the womb or before the 24-28 week mark. With the setting aside of the historic judgement on abortion in the U.S, here’s a look at the laws that govern abortion in India. How did abortion laws come about in India? In the 1960s, in the wake of a high number of induced abortions taking place, the Union government ordered the constitution of the Shantilal Shah Committee to deliberate on the legalisation of abortion in the country. In order to reduce maternal mortality owing to unsafe abortions, the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act was brought into force in 1971. This law is an exception to the Indian Penal Code (IPC) provisions of 312 and 313 and sets out the rules of how and when a medical abortion can be carried out. … [Read more...] about Explained | What are India’s laws on abortions?
Two years on, national security law proves its worth in safer, more stable Hong Kong
After nearly two years of Hong Kong’s national security law, critics condemning it seem more anxious to have their worst fears vindicated than disproved. The city was said to be plunging headlong into a cauldron of tyranny. That has not happened, though. Instead, the status quo spanning business activity and civil institutions is better protected from disruptive strife than before. Protesters who rejected such legislation might be taking a vital civil order for granted. Democratic societies champion such laws for themselves to help preserve their democracy. In Washington, one morning’s mob violence at the Capitol Building has seen criminal prosecutions more than a year later. Legislators in the US Congress who expressed support for Hong Kong’s months-long protests are busily investigating their protesters while strengthening security on their own turf. What is the reality in Hong Kong since the promulgation of the security law? Peace and order have returned to the streets and … [Read more...] about Two years on, national security law proves its worth in safer, more stable Hong Kong
